Three-goal blast take Harps to title

Derrygonnelly 4-06  Maguiresbridge 1-11

Derrygonnelly Harps captured the Fermanagh Minor Championship title with a three-goal blast in a three minute second half spell proving the turning point in this encounter.

Derrygonnelly opened the scoring with a fine solo effort coming from midfielder Garvan Jones before a Conor Durnien free for Maguiresbridge on seven minutes drew the sides level.

Gary McKenna of Derrygonnelly and Dwayne Rice of Maguiresbridge both had goal chances that went marginally wide before McKenna clipped over a 14 metre free after a surging run from Darragh McGovern to put the Harps one ahead.

A monster of a free from Conor Durnien drew the sides level again, but once more captain McKenna was to restore the Harps' lead, winning the ball in front of his marker and turning brilliantly to fire over the bar.

Maguiresbridge then introduced Patrick Hyde from the bench and he made an instant impact around the middle of the field with his powerful running.

Conor Durnien was on hand again to score from a free on 22 minutes for Maguiresbridge before Barry Duffy set up David Teague and he give the Bridge men the lead, 0-04 to 0-03, for the first time in the game.

Another Durnien free on 27 minutes put his side 0-05 to 0-03 ahead and slowly the game was turning in favour of Maguiresbridge.

Derrygonnelly though were to receive a huge boost when Lee Jones fired to the net soccer style after Paul McHugh's original effort smacked off the post and this saw the Harps take a one point advantage at the break, 1-03 to 0-05.

Hyde began to see a lot more ball early in the second half and he teed up Durnien to make it all level.

Maguiresbridge were now on top and Hyde again orchestrated the next move, he slipped in Dwayne Rice and the towering midfielder saw his shot hit the crossbar and go over the bar to give Maguiresbridge the lead.

The 'Bridge moved two ahead when Stephen Breen fired over on 33 minutes and they looked to be taking control as Ciaran Corrigan clipped over from an acute angle to make it 0-09 to 1-03.

A Garvan Jones free in the 37th minute was to finally settle the Harps back into the game and they went on to hit Maguirebridge with a three goal blitz that completely turned the game on its head.

Midfielder Garvan Jones, who was looking extremely dangerous every time he got on the ball, was to smash home a terrific goal following good approach play from Darragh McGovern, Paul McHugh and Colm Jones as the Harps moved into a one point lead. Colm Jones then drilled a 25 yard effort low into the corner and Gary McKenna followed up with a third goal in as many minutes to leave Maguiresbridge shell-shocked, the Harps turning a two point deficit into a seven point advantage.

With 13 minutes still to play Maguiresbridge were by no means going to throw the towel in and Durnien was to convert a penalty. All of a sudden Maguiresbridge were showing the spirit that got them to the final and with Ciaran Corrigan and Durnien then both pointing it left it 4-04 to 1-11 with only three minutes remaining.

Derrygonnelly though were dogged throughout and deep into injury time they secured the victory as Garvan Jones and Gary McKenna knocked over frees to see Derrygonnelly capture their first Minor Championship trophy since 2003.

While Maguiresbridge were defeated they still battled gamely throughout and had impressive performers in defenders Paddy Gavin and Brendan McCusker, while midfielder Conor Durnien was hugely influential for his side especially with his excellent free taking.

Stephen Breen and Ciaran Corrigan were most impressive in the forward line.

The winners Derrygonnelly had some top notch performers in defence coming from John Joe Moore and Conor Cameron, while Garvan Jones at midfield was outstanding. Forwards Colm Jones and Gary McKenna were terrific, the latter was instrumental in the last 15 minutes of the game.

No correlation between minor success and senior success in Armagh. What about other counties?

Very much so in Derry.

Dungiven won a championship in 97 following a minor win in 90.
Bellaghy won 6 in 94, 96, 98-00 and 05 as well as a couple of Ulster clubs following minor wins in 91 and 94.
Loup won 2 senior championships in 03 and 09 following minor wins in 93 and 95.
Ballinderry won seniors in 95, 01, 02, 06, 08, 11 & 12 going on to win the All-Ireland in 02 following minor wins in 96, 97, 01 & 08.
Slaughtneil won a championship in 04 following their 98 minor win and were also beat in the 99 minor final.
Kilrea have been close in recent years without getting over the line.
Glenullin & Coleraine have been the only team in Derry to win a senior championships without any major underage success recently.
