It might get more interesting the last couple of rounds but the reality is its likely to be the middle tier teams fighting it out for a couple of spots with maybe one or two "big" teams needing a win. Same as every other year, a money making racket before Christmas and the real competetion only starts in Feb/March

This is my take too. The group stages have been a bore for quite some time. It's just a different type of boring now. They didn't destroy it ; they just failed to resuscitate it

There's too many teams in the competition.  27 games with a 3 goal margin or more to date and not even 5 rounds of games complete.

I dont mind the number of teams as such but i think a straight knock out with no seeding would be much better. Maybe allow for no meeting a team from your own league for say the first 3 rounds.

As you say, never going to happen though. UEFA would not allow the chance of a "bad" draw taking out a load of the big names in Sept/Oct.

The old format had issues, but you still had the traditionally big team slipping up and falling into the Europa. Or a team getting a couple of draws and needing to eke out a win in the final game.
Just find the current set up a farce.

As a Celtic fan I think the formats brilliant. 8 different teams as opposed to home and away makes it better as a supporter of one of the clubs involved too.

UEFA have only gone and stolen the format of the GAA Masters All-Ireland, which as Tyrone people will attest, is actually the second best competition this side of Alpha Centuri. More power to them, anything that gives the likes of Celtic and Villa something to get excited about works for me, while it has its foibles its worth a go for a while to see how it pans out, although the likes of Villa and Celtic might have liked the safety net of dropping into the Europa I think its better that option isn't available

Well at least this way theres 4 or whatever it is strong/reasonably strong teams from Spain and England etc
