Is a rest weekend good or bad for Derry?
The positives are obvious but i think you could make the argument that Derry could come out a little stale.
Clare werent a proper test. So Derry will go into this QF (against a decent opponent) having not played a proper Championship game since Donegal in almost a month.
Thoughts?
Rest is good at this stage for Derry.  Back to where we want to be and a bit of time now to refocus.
Given the energy needed to effectively carry out their game plan ( where every player is working constantly with and without the ball ) a rest week for Derry is absolutely vital.  It will also help to clear up any injuries and give Ciaran McFaul more time to improve his fitness level and after this week-end they will know who their opponents will be.

Great to top the group and i got it wrong about Donegal!!! Was disappointed with Brendan Rogers this last two games I know because of his previous performances he is very much a continuously " marked man" which should within the context of the system allow more space for someone else to shine eg McFaul but its not happening for him either.  We're now in tougher territory playing against better quality opposition and all the backroom teams are very well prepared on the strengths of their opposition.  We need to create something special to get over the next hurdle and just as Sherlock from Cork produced a fantastic performance from the subs' bench v Mayo I think Lachlan Murray can give us a real scoring boost if we can get him good quality ball....

what do folk think ?

Monaghan will devour Donegal  with a lot goals which means they will top the group on scoring difference .... hope i'm wrong

Very comprehensive list of players Estimator and I'm not sure who would make a difference in 2023.  There comes a time when players like Chrissey  McKaigue and Benny Herron time at this level has to end and that can't be far away.  So far the Senior Club Championship has been very ordinary ... Jerome McGuigan and the Ballinderry keeper McKinless look to be good players ... still think also Jack Doherty also has potential.

The commitment is unreal and what I find is that there is limited time opportunities {in their work /lifestyle} for self-employed fella s to be get involved.  I thought that Ben McCarron got too few minutes playing time to test his ability and mentality at this level.  But they put into a titanic effort to become Ulster Champions for a fairly young team.

If they could do it once, then they should be able do it again but we need new blood ... anyone with ideas out there ?

It takes an awful lot of money to fund County Management team and all the hidden costs associated with team analyists,  medical back up physios etc.  And while for eg pundits talk about Galway just needing a few more quality players to make them more competitive in 2023 while at the same time they probably have a few top players like Conroy who is at the other end of his career ..... it can become a very risking business waiting on players to develop a team ..... I think young aspiring county players will catch on very quickly if there is enough talent within their squad to win firstly a Provinceinal title not to mention Sam or Liam .... and all the best management personal in the world won't make any difference.

Number 1 .... Sean Cavanagh loves Sean Cavanagh.  When Brian Dooher was playing for Tyrone he did the 'donkey work' ( ie handed him easy ball) for him and he was a very efficient and effective cog in that Tyrone set -up .... when Dooher retired Sean Cavanagh wasn't nearly as effective or as influential.

Derry are in an all-Ireland semi-final and that is something I didn't thank would happen this year ....

Galway have 3 outstanding lightening quick forwards that will be very hard to contain and Derry have maximised their performances by their  ability to play a system that isn't easy to break down whether in defensive or offensive mode.   Galway's Championship record over Derry is 100% ... how can Derry get the edge over them this time ... by sticking to their plan that beat Donegal with a few  additional raids early in the game and try and prevent Galway getting any goals before half-time.

Great post. There needs to be some cognisance given to the state of the game as a spectacle. For a Derry man, it's only natural that the feeling is that, after 24 years, you don't really care how we won on Sunday. But that doesn't mean that once the dust has settled, we can't look at things objectively, and agree that the rules need to move with the game to improve the spectacle.
4 forwards inside the opposing 50 at all times would be a simple and effective start.

Watched the Dublin v Kildare game and that what Kildare were doing ... had 4 of their forwards inside the Dublin 50 ... and when Dublin scored their Goals those Kildare fowards were doing nothing... !!!!!

About that team performance .... there was was Brendan Rogers scoring from inside the Donegal 35 and in the Derry goal mouth Shane McGuigan with 2 fantastic high catches (under severe pressure !!) inside the Derry 14 defending like his life depended on it ... these were  3/4 stand out moments.   Any many other players doing the same heroics including .... Paul Cassidy,  Conor Glass , the Doherty's, Gareth McKinless and Paul McGrogan .... 18 Men playing as a team ...

Absolutely overjoyed with winning the Ulster title .... all the bad days obliterated ... Fantastic appreciation to the whole team, what another brilliant team performance .... and what an astute Management team led by Rory Gallagher ... and there is more to come

My first taste of  Ulster Final success was when we beat Antrim in 1970 at Casement Park .... and this one was every bit as good .... Henry Diamond of Newbridge was full back I think ... over 51 years ago

Great to see the excitement and buildup around the county. A big day to enjoy no matter what the result. We'll not be far away and certainly fully deserve the chance of a first Ulster title since 1998. Doire abĂș!

Aye agree with above .... and every one on the panel deserve to be there and test themselves against Donegal to see who is the best in Ulster in 2022.

Any ideas on how the teams may line out ... will Stephen Campbell start and will Mattie Donnelly be fit for Tyrone

Derry will struggle if they go long with their kick-outs and i'm not so sure they can devise a short-effective option against this Donegal team.  I feel this is the where the game will be won or lost.    Delighted we are in the Ulster Final and we'll see what transpires on the day .. good luck to the Minors as well
