General discussion / Mayo Peace Park
August 27, 2009, 04:20:33 PM
Mayo Peace Park
Garden of Remembrance
Castlebar
County Mayo
Ireland

This website is dedicated to honour the memory of all those from Mayo, who served and died in all wars worldwide and conflicts of the past century, with the Allied and Commonwealth Forces, a forgotten generation who were written out of local history until recent times. We remember those who served or died in all wars worldwide and it especially remembers all those Mayo born Irish Army soldiers who served and died on UN operations.

The President of Ireland Mrs Mary McAleese will perform the official opening of the Mayo Peace Park, Garden of Remembrance in Castlebar , County Mayo, at 2pm, on Tuesday the 7th of October 2008.

I was just wondering what each of the major groups in a United Ireland would feel they where giving up & what they would & would not be willing to give up, for the few Unionist Northerners that seem to pass through here I would ask them to pretend that a legitimate vote of the people had brought this about (its only hypothetical).

I reckon the major groups would be Southerners, Northern Nationalists, Northern Unionists, and Immigrants (to either region)

This is something people need to think about if we want to ever re-unify this Island. I thought of this because of the very different views on life being expressed by people North & South of the border re the Hunger Strikers thread. Note this is NOT intended as another Hunger Striker Thread. Even for people born a few miles south of the border they seem to be expressing views closer to Cork men than Tyrone men, has the border created two very different types of Irish nationalist with a different moral map.

I personally would hate to give up institutions such as the Gardai, the Southern Education system, the Euro currency, the general abhorrence to terrorism & the close unity between Catholic, Protestant & Dissenter South of the border. I would hate to give up Dail Eireann & the Seanad (but might be willing to give up as few of its current members) I would despise the thought of Mayo losing yet another seat in the Dail. I would hate to see Connacht even further marginalised & ignored by the re-introduction of the 6 counties. I would hate to see Irish taken off the compulsory curriculum. I would hate to see infrastructure projects in the West being put back to 40 years rather than the 20-25 year promises we now get.

A Northern Irish/UK style NHS is the only thing I would welcome, but we cannot afford it.

In fact I don't want my country to change & I expect it to be a case of the current Irish State expanding to take control of the entire island rather than a unification of two different political entities. I know this is selfish, but this seems to be the view of the majority of my friends, who come predominantly from Mayo, Galway, Roscommon, Clare, Cork, Dublin, Wicklow, Meath, Laois, and Kildare & Wexford.

Lads after a few days down in the dumps I have decided to let the hope enter my heart again. FFS we are Mayo & if we where half as brittle as the always make out we are, our players, managers & fans would never keep coming back like we ALWAYS do. Just some positives that came to me.

Positives

1.   Aiden O'Shea is really fitting into his role at full forward. CLASS ACT
2.   We are Connacht Champions
3.   We defeated Galway twice this year in Competitive Football
4.   We seem to have more options in our forwards than this time last year
5.   We have learnt not to put O'Shea at midfield (U-21 semi V Down) & not play Parsons out position in the forwards, he is a midfielder.

MAYO 4 EVER

KEEP THE FAITH

General discussion / Employment - Ireland or Other?
January 12, 2009, 05:30:43 AM
Just interested to know where people think people should be looking for work, be it long-term future, skipping the country (whichever one they actually in right now) for a few years until the credit crises blows over, move away for good, move home, stay put etc.

The reason I am asking is because so many more people are coming over from Europe to Oz, especially from Ireland to get away from the doom & gloom back home, but jobs are getting clearly harder to get over here & both Irish publications, various ex-pat papers, backpacker magazines are all saying  the same. You read about people over here since September and can't find work. Its the same when you talk to people, it is much harder to find work both in the cities and on farms. I read that accountants are a dime-a-dozen now over here, but a few years ago one of my mates was making very good money in Sydney.

Lads move the Mayo debate to here & let the Sligo lot debate Sligo football on their own thread.

I will rename this thread when enough people know to switch over & leave the Sligos in peace .

Bad news for Cavan residents hoping the new super-hospital in the northeast will be anywhere near Cavan: Bertie Ahern doesn't even know Cavan's in the Republic.

Speaking in the Dail yesterday, the Taoiseach incorrectly identified Co. Cavan as part of Northern Ireland.

While the rest of us were learning Irish geography, he was probably taking secret classes in how to keep large amounts of money safe without a bank account.

I bet that class was great fun, and included tips on denying things, where best to stash the money (safes and the like) and, when confronted with questions about the cash-stashing, detailed diagrams of the expression into which you should arrange your face.

During a debate on the lack of broadband availability in Ireland, during which Enda Kenny produced figures showing Ireland comes 33rd in a list of 35 "good broadband" countries, Bertie started blustering about the technology companies Google and Apple.

"They all use this country as their research and development base," he said.

"Not in County Cavan," shouted Deputy Seymour Crawford, delighted for the chance to get his constituency into the conversation, even when it has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

The three-times-elected Taoiseach then said ... wait for it ... "I am talking about the Republic of Ireland."

Silence.

Perhaps in an attempt to gloss over this embarrassment, Fine Gael TD James Bannon continued the broadband rant, saying, "It is patchy throughout Ireland."

Next, in a childish "so's your face" style of retaliation, a TD shot back: "Fine Gael is patchy throughout Ireland."

Bertie, meanwhile, did not take this chance to change the subject but actually repeated his previous slight on Cavan.

By "slight" I mean giant, unbelievable display of ignorance.

"While the House can discuss County Cavan another day, I am discussing the Republic of Ireland and Members should keep to that," rumbled Bertie importantly.

"County Cavan is not in the North," an anonymous TD said (I imagine) wearily. Or maybe, he whispered to Bertie, reminding him of what everyone else learned in primary school.

But we shouldn't blame our Taoiseach for his alarming lack of Six Counties geography knowledge. It's not really his fault - he was just paying extra attention in Money Gathering 101.

Maybe this explains why Cavan is getting screwed over by Bertie & his lame-brain mis-government.

I think this is a major burning issue of our day to find out if Ballaghadeereen really is the greatest of the great parts of Mayo.  8)
