Why put it up then?
Em, because he died and this is the Death Notices thread

Fairly obvious I would have thought

Have to agree with you here Sid. Posting the name of a significant person on a Death Notices thread when they have just died seems perfectly logical.

McKevitt is not someone I will mourn. We all have a chance to make a contribution to human existence, spread a little happiness and move things forward.

McKevitt's contribution to humanity was a negative one. He probably claimed some love for Ireland but again his contribution to Ireland and the Irish was a negative one. I am certain for a number of younger people he is simply an irrelevance but for those a little older he was a malignant force and for the vast majority the pain and suffering he caused was unimaginable. But then there will be a small but still very significant minority for whom that pain and torture is not unimaginable as they have lived through and continue to experience that pain and suffering.

The man is dead and no doubt close family and friends feel that loss but be let's be clear the man was a sc**bag. I would be very surprised if that was not the view of the vast majority of Irish people that ever heard of him.

May his victims rest in peace

Interesting subject though, what would be the greatest sports anthem? I've always thought You'll Never Walk Alone a bit too plodding and maudling, mind you I'd hardly be considered objective even if United did sing it 1st  ;)

Hardly

No other song associated with sport has the real life resonance that YNWA has, few other songs anywhere have its resonance

After Hillsborough it took on exponentially greater meaning, it meant and means something very deep and profound to people - it's a symbol of a community rallying together, a struggle for justice

Liverpool has a greater sense of identity - of social solidarity, of what it is and what it isn't - than anywhere else in England, maybe more than anywhere in Europe

Gerry Marsden's music has been a constant rallying point for that

Birmingham's Keep Right On To The End Of The Road and Hib's Sunshine On Leith  are two that resonate with their supporters every bit as much as YNWA. If you take into account that the vast majority of their supporters come from the respective cities you could argue even more so.
This one is pretty emotional too.

Anyway this should probably be left for another thread.
RIP Gerry.
