Had the refugees on the boat went through an are they alive/not alive mystery for 4 days then it would have been bigger news.

This was Apollo 13 underwater.

The point is no one it seems cares that over 1000 humans perished in our seas while every is glued to their screens and 4 f**king eejits with more money than sense.

Of course, people with money are less important than people with no money. Makes sense :-\

No, the point was one dragged on for 4 days and had an air of mystery that left people wondering what happened or if they would ever be found. Media are able to milk something like that for all its worth. I saw an American channel even ran an "hours of oxygen left" banner...
Remember the Chilean miners? They were working class men but it was global news because it ran on and on. It is nothing to do with how rich the people involved are.

Is there not an element of that (and I realise I'm paraphrasing Josef Stalin here) that you kill 5 people it's a tragedy you kill 1000 it's a statistic.

Also as humans we can probably understand and relate better to smaller numbers. There's a relatively low number it's around 7k (can't remember exactly what it is) after which your brain struggles to recognise the significance of your spending. So you say pay 5k for something it's harder than paying 250k for say a house.

Of course people care and nobody wants to see anyone drown out at sea but at the same time the Titanic story from 1912 was, is and will always be box office and that's why it has gathered a lot of interest.
If the migrants were in a position that they had 3 or 4 days to be saved out at sea then that would have been all over the news too.

I think the difference in the deaths of hundreds in the med and the missing submarine is voyeurism. It's humans desire to be involved in real time events, be it a spectator or as a commentator.

The drownings in the med are tragic, and there should be conversations round these. But generally we hear about these after they happened. As harsh as it sounds, it's done, game over, nothing to see or do. Feel sad about it but we don't like or want to feel sad. Others will have different thoughts that is a whole other discussion.

Hearing of a missing sub is a story. It's a real life drama, throw in everything about it - the titantic, billionaires, survivial mission etc and we are all engaged, we are spectators. It's a discussion round the water cooler or in the canteen or coffee shop. It's a race for information and to be the first with something new to add. Everyone is a participant in the drama unfolding, knowingly or unknowingly.

There is huge tragedy everyday in the world, some of it makes the headlines, majority doesn't. The more common the tragedy the less we hear of them. A real time event with an unknown outcome will trump anything that has concluded.

It's human nature, rubber necking for want of a better phrase.
