GAA Discussion / Re: The Sunday Game

Quote from: marty34 on Today at 07:43:33 AMBig issue now is that there's so many games, and high level ones at that, on every week-end.

Used to be 2 games on a Sunday to focus on.  Now it usually 4 or 5 on a Saturday and the same on a Sunday.

The imbalance of a split season I suppose.

Majority of people will have watched the main live games and heard the analysis during those programmes.

Is there a need then for most of the Sunday Game programme to be taken up by those 'live' games.

There is a definitive need for a less formal show which can capture the rest of the games in more detail. What would be wrong with a mid week show, with a chance to explore the big stories of the week, look back and look ahead to games coming up the following weekend?

Same conversation about the coverage every year i don't think things are going to change.

Was there a few Saturday night highlight shows last year?

Quote from: thewobbler on April 19, 2024, 01:22:29 PMIt's odd isn't it?

Every single last person involved in sport knows that protracted knockout competitions are a steaming pile of dung until the element of jeopardy arrives.

And yet all around Ireland, all around the world, we keep introducing and extending these formats.

Other sports can at least use professionalism and a need for paying spectators as their excuse.

We cannot.

How much do the spectators get paid>?

Quote from: Sportacus on April 09, 2024, 12:30:06 PMStill can't work out why we don't have an All Ireland Senior, Intermediate and Junior Championship.  Works a treat at club level where every trophy is hard fought and cherished. It would deliver lots more meaningful, evenly contested and attractive games.
Everything else adds to the issue: ticket prices; state of grounds; tv coverage; other sports etc.
The quality of the product is an issue with the coaches, not the rules.
And how many people even knew Monaghan were playing Cavan on Sunday - it just crept up.

There are 3 grades, Kilkenny won the Junior in 2022 and didn't take their promotion the wa*ks, NY won it last year with a team of homegrown Yanks. Going back to the previous format loads of counites opted out, Kerry cleverly used it as a bridge between their minor and Senior setups, a lot of the Kerry lads would have AI's at Junior level. The reason not to split Sam / Tailteann into a further third tier (which I think would have been your point) was provided last weekend by Wickla and Waterford, 2 tiers is plenty

I wouldn't say 2 tiers is plenty and a couple of freak results doesn't change that.

How many 'freak' results would it take - should Wickla not be allowed to bet Westmead?

"Wicklow" or Waterford haven't even a hope of winning the Tallthin cup and would be more beneficial for them to be in a third tier competition.

And no-one would have given Cavan a hope of winning the Covid Ulster (except Mickey Harte) but they did

There's 16 teams who won't win the Tailteann, they might not all have the goal of winning it, they of course want to get as far as possible but some could be targeting a quarter final or semi-finals as a real sign of progress, to bounce from into next year and beyond

Leave that race to the bottom mentality for hurling with its 5 tier nonsence

Why not they were in the Final in 2019 so it was not a big step to come back the following year and go on and win it.

Quote from: tbrick18 on April 08, 2024, 09:43:13 AMFair play Cavan, deserved the win to be fair.
First half was brutal though from both teams.
I think this is 2 teams heading in opposite directions passing each other, Monaghan are on the slide with their better players aging whereas Cavan are improving.
I think Cavan will give Tyrone a real game of it. Tyrone nothing to be afraid of at the minute. They've had 1 decent half of football all year against a depleted Mayo team, so it's even hard to read much into that.

Cavan could well edge it playing the way the did in the final quarter of that game.

I though Cavan were brilliant in the first half  :o

I would love to see teams launching kickouts out on top of the opposition goalkeeper when he comes out to stand on one side of the pitch during kickouts it's a great platform to attack and go for goal if they opposition don't win it as there is 65m of open field to drive into.

No, Breffni. Cavan were away today, so they get home next day out. Tyrone would have been at home if Monaghan won

Thanks

Quote from: Aaron Boone on March 21, 2024, 11:08:38 PMWhenever a player or manager retires, the media report always says he won x All Irelands then x National Leagues then the Provincial wins. Check it out the next time a star retires.

The National League is a national title, one of only two per year. It's important.

The team that would top the league would be awarded the league title.
Ask the Leitrim lads- the chance to play a final in Croker means loads to them. I'm in favour of as many games vs training as possible and it's another game, plus a great experience for teams that will realistically never get to a big day in championship.

I'm not saying it's not i was just responding to the poster who seemed to think that there wouldn't be titles if there was no final. I think there should be finals btw.

Quote from: yellowcard on March 16, 2024, 04:20:04 PMMeath are one of those teams that you don't know what you're going to get from one game to the next. Cork after a very poor start have now won their last 3 matches and have turned it around at the right time. Is that them guaranteed to be in the Sam Maguire cup now?

Can't ever be guaranteed to be in Sam whilst your in Division 2 as there's so many variables with the provincials.

But I reckon to be 90% sure you'll need to top 4 in Division 2.

Top 5 once Meath finish above you as they are guaranteed Sam Maguire Football regardless of their league position.

It really is a mine field. For example I really think Down would like Fermanagh relegated and Louth to stay up because of the Leinster draw.

Looking at you probably have to think it's going to be one Munster finalist from outside the top 16 in the league 0 in Connacht or Ulster and then potentially 1 or 0 in Leinster. So if it's that then staying in Div 2 will probably be good enough and who ever tops Div 3 or wins Div 3 final (not sure which is seeded higher) probably gets the last spot.

Not sure about that I worked it out a few weeks ago I think you need to be at least 5th in Division 2 to be sure.

<exhales loudly>

Any the answer to that would be now i would presume.  Not directly outside anyway.
