It meant quite a lot to the people of those parishes. As a spectacle it was everything the Ryder Cup is not.

This I don't understand. If Ireland win the World Cup then why get excited about a British isles select beating South Africa?

i think a proper world cup of  golf would be better than a ryder cup if marketed properly

Mcilroy obviously gets so wound up about it all, a few derby slaps when younger might have changed his outlook on life, tho I'm sure he's quite happy with his current life trajectory.

So is interclub golf is contrived or US college golf is contrived? Team golf is quite common at amateur level. Can get nasty enough too at times  :)

I do get the Europe thing does feel a bit hard to get behind. Then again all Irish professional franchise Rugby and the international team is contrived as fcuk. Still I'm on the bandwagon  ;D

Why does he need his outlook on life changed? Strange comment

If you've ever stood over a putt that means anything at all (particularly in a team game) and had to make it for the win or tie, it's the emotional equivalent of teeth and hair flying inside you. It's a silent hatred against the opponent for that period of time where you simply want to stomp someone who may be your best mate into the ground on the scorecard. Just because it doesn't end up all Kilcoo and Clonduff doesn't take away from the competitive edge. Just look at the amount of people driven to cheating to win.

I can't imagine the pressure to have a putt to win or to not lose the Ryder Cup.

It doesn't, as alluded to in the very next sentence.

Yeah, I read it repeatedly. Still not sure what you're actually saying in regards to McIlroy.

To spell it out for you - if he'd played GAA / Soccer in an actual genuine 'derby' context he'd know what a real rivalry is - not a contrived one like the Ryder Cup.

should have stopped there in fairness

bennydorano

I normally do stop myself tbh  (as i wearily see the same sorta comments on the Celtic thread), didn't think it was controversial tho.

Wasnt that long ago Rahm said he had enough money blah blah, they are all full of shit but if he does go there will probably be a domino effect.

Would say Cantlay is busting his balls to go. PGA Tour will be fairly worthless if they lose a few of the top ones
Let no-one say the best hurlers belong to the past. They are with us now, and better yet to come

Jay Monahan is one of the stupidest people on the planet. How he allowed this to happen is beyond me. He should be the next strategist for the DUP.
