GAA Discussion / Re: Tyrone V Monaghan AIQF 2015
August 15, 2015, 03:58:45 PM
Even the most ardent Tyronian has to recognize what McCann did was out of line but the backlash has been extreme. The onset of social media means that these days condemnation can be anonymous, immediate and brutal. While you'd expect some morons on twitter to know no better, some of the comments from players, ex players, journalists etc has been one eyed hyperbole . Unfortunately for Tyrone, they have annoyed a lot of people in the past and their failings are seized on by more than most.

GAA's machismo considers feigning injury and diving to be a much worse act than actually causing an injury in the first place. Should it be though ? Should someone who stamps on a prostrate opponent or punches someone in the back of the head be less castigated than the person who feigns injury.

All the same diving is still a blight on the game and should be eradicated, however you cannot suddenly, in the middle of the season, ban a player for this when other transgressors have escaped punishment all year. We all know Tyronians aren't slow in playing the persecution card ! but they'd have every right to feel picked on if McCann's proposed ban goes through.

I'd like to see the GAA next season to have a citing commissoner to review every Championship match on a Monday evening who can hand out bans/punishments for those who have committed serious foul play during a game and indeed simulation should come under this bracket. I think the SPL have had a system for a number of years when you can punish players retrospectively if they feel they have dived or feigned injury.

While I can't believe I'm actually writing this I do actually feel a bit sorry for Tyrone. In 2 of their 3 last three matches they have came in for some seriously bad hits from the opposition. The focus on McCann has certainly taken away the spotlight from Monaghan's discipline in the last 10 or mins. They simply lost the head and could easily had a few more sent off, Paul Finlay was a walking red card from the moment he came on, madness for such a talented player.

Mickey Harte has done brilliantly to get his team so far. Everyone knows that they aren't a patch talent wise on their 00's vintage with only really Donnelly, Harte and S Cavanagh as top notch players. They'll probably not have enough at midfield to beat Kerry but they've proved many doubters wrong so far this year. It's a pity their excellence has been overshadowed by the McCann incident.

For the 6 cars heading down it won't make a pile a difference ;-) Though I and heading down to Kesh on Sunday, late afternoon though do I head into Enniskillen to get to Kesh?

Nope head through Omagh - Lack - Ederney - Kesh

I think Michael McGovern (Falkirk and Hamilton custodian) won a Corn na nÓg with St Michaels, not sure if he was about for a McRory win though.

GAA Discussion / Re: The Sunday Game
June 22, 2014, 12:13:18 AM
The Sunday Game crew have annoyed me for years now, but today, with my Fermanagh hat on, I thought the pundits were particularly dreadful.

I'd say the depth of their research on the Fermanagh team was a cursory glance at this year's league tables and a quick look at the Sunday Game's 5 minute highlights of the Antrim game. They'd no idea who any of the players were except for the 3 lads still around from 2004. Not one of them mentioned that Tomas Corrigan, who'd been arguably our best forward in the league was missing or that Johnny Woods, our best defender, had a broken jaw. Just simple stuff that would have taken a few minutes research but these were things that impacted heavily on Pete McGrath's gameplan. Mind you it seemed they knew little about the Laois players either except for the obvious ones like Munnelly, Kingston and Begley.

As for the commentary team, a poster above mentioned Morrissey's patronizing attitude towards Fermanagh. It's not just Fermanagh he does it to. The incredulous tone in his voice when he describes a player from a lower ranked team kicking a half decent score has been a bugbear of mine for manys a year.

You'd hope for a bit of analysis from the National broadcaster. They've lapsed into throwing out lazy cliches and sweeping generalizations. 'Fermanagh are playing a more traditional style under Pete McGrath'. How about giving us some examples of this ? compare how they set up against Cavan last year with how they played against Antrim maybe. Instead lets speak about how both Laois and Fermanagh were quite good in the mid noughties but not so much now. Spillane even got to throw in the old 'half of Fermanagh are Protestants and other half is under water' line.  At least he was relatively positive about us before the match though compared to his sidekick Chuckles O'Rourke.

Anyways, fair play to Laois. They got over the line even though they played badly for long patches and that should hold them in good stead for the future. As for Fermanagh, we've the McKenna Cup to look forward to in January.  :)

Mark Murphy back as well. He's been out of the country for at least 5 years or so.

Anybody know if the matches are on the radio today ?

Dawson or Canavan for me. Dawson has the best record but Canavan would bring the buzz back.

Well lads has anyone heard any more about the job ? According to the IR the 7 people nominated are Peter Canavan, Paddy Crozier, Frank Dawson, Peter Clarke, Dom Corrigan, Darren Chapman and James Lovett. How many of those will actually put themselves through the interview process though is a different matter. Glad to see that Pete McGrath will be part of the selection committee.

Personally I'd like to see an outside manager take the job to try and heal the divisions of last year. I'm disappointed that Brian McIver hasn't been nominated as I thought he would have been ideal. Canavan would certainly have the respect of the players but I don't think Errigal have done that well in the Tyrone Championship under him in the last few years. Nevertheless it would be a great coup to get him and would certainly bring back a spark and interest in the team that has been lacking for a few years.

Twitter is great for getting Club Championships updates. Just put whichever team you are looking for into the search box and more than liklely you'll get something.
