Title: Dundalk FC acquired by US consortium.
Post by: T Fearon on January 20, 2018, 08:11:56 AM
Looks like this will put them well ahead of all local competition.Have fond memories of Oriel Park, saw my first ever Celtic game there (Dalglish and Mc Grain both in the team that night), also was there for big European ties involving PSV Eindhoven,Celtic,Spurs and Liverpool.

It could be a good thing! If it Keeps decently talented lads playing in Ireland It'd be great. Also may attract decent players to our League. The problem is you don't want/need a Celtic type dominance like there is in Scotland (at the moment)! But if one Club pushes on with the help of financial clout, it may spur a few more to get out of their comfort zone. Doing well in Europe is worth a lot of money in the present climate.

Celtic and Rangers have natural advantages in terms of fanbase etc that ensures they will always have a stranglehold over Scottish football - it's a bit like Dublin now in GAA, nobody can compete with the resources they have in terms of population, facilities, money, working arrangements.

It can only be a good thing for the LOI as it might attract more financial backing for other clubs and build the domestic game up here. Seamus Coleman is a good example of a player who was let go for a pittance and within a few years was a £20m rated player. LOI clubs simply cannot tie these players down on long term contracts thus it vastly reduce their transfer values. It would be good for Irish football to see a club with a bit of money being able to invest in bringing through academy players.

Surely a big club like Shamrock Rovers is ripe for a similar takeover.

How much could either club cost? Surely you could buy them for a million quid.

Think Dundalk would be worth a bit more than that, given their recent European competition income.

Wouldn't be hard to build a new stadium for Rovers. They are Ireland's most famous club, and Dublin based.

Not particularly. Around Europe many of the big clubs are groundsharing facilities owned by the city councils. It would depend a lot on the state of the stadium. If you have to put a lot of funds into renovating a ground it means less for day to day spending.
From a League of Ireland view Rovers get use of a fairly modern stadium in Tallaght. Bohs and Shels are going to groundshare a renovated Dalymount. Irish clubs will never get massive crowds while the "greatest supporters in the world" traipse over to England and Scotland every weekend

Sadly the local game is not high profile enough to prevent the weekly exodus. But I think this acquisition is good for the game here.

In the Champions League qualifiers this year,Rosenborg were lucky to knock Dundalk out, then they gave Celtic plenty of trouble in the next round.
