GAA Discussion / Re: Best Mayo player since 1980

I don't want to be a nit picker but I I could come up with different choices depending on how I'd define best.
The most talented  would have to be Ciaran McDonald - I'd have no hesitation there.
The most effective would be a toss between Kenneth Mortimer and James Horan. By that I mean the one who did the job he was selected to do in the most efficient and consistent manner; Mortimer make life hell for every corner forward that faced him, while Horan availed of the slightest half-chance to slot over some sublime scores.

But, if I had to pick the one I enjoyed watching the most and the one who by example inspired his team mates the most I'd have to opt for Willie Joe Padden.

QuoteI had an awful dream one of the nights that O'Mahony wouldn't take it!     Jaysus I was never as relieved to have woken up!

Well, you can sleep more easily from now on, I hope. ;D

Rumour on mayofans.com says that Johnno, along with TJ Kilgallon and Tommy Lyons (Ballina) has been appointed but there will be no announcement until details such as fixture schedules and the likes are finalised.

Now, it is a good idea to be wary of rumours and there are bound to be plenty of them in circulation but the posters on that board seem to put credence in their sources.

Maybe, just maybe, the end is finally in sight....

Mayo / Re: mayo hurling

Brennan didnt give a good account of himself to the hurling people when down in Mayo last year. Cant understand why he is so much against Hurling Counties like Mayo. Sean Kelly had more of a GrĂ¡ for hurling than Brennan.

And therein, I bet, lies the root of the problem; Brennan is a Kilkenny man while Kelly is not from a "traditional" hurling county.
The greatest\ obstacle to hurling keeping abreast of the changing times comes from the conservatism of those in its stronghold areas.
I am not surprised at the bucket's comment that Galway won't help Mayo to develop its hurling. I'd imagine Roscommon people would say the same thing of Galway.
I generally get along well with any Wexford people I know; on the whole they are a friendly and tolerant lot but not where hurling is concerned. I mention that county in particular because I find their hurling snootiness greatly at variance with their tolerance in other matters.
Some Kilkenny people, Brennan probably included would be of the same mindset; they don't want to see mud-warriors like ourselves progressing at the game.

GAA Discussion / Re: Mickey Moran at Creggan

Good luck to Mickey; many in Mayo were downright sorry to see him leave; especially the way in which he left.
He seems to be a very nice and sincere type of guy and the club that gets him can be sure of 100% committment from him.
Any word on Beefer; are the pair o fthem working together?

Nah!.. Not a good idea at all.
Trouble is for one-issue candidates is that they soon find out that there many other matters that they have to take a stand on and that are not even remotely connected to the issue they entered politics for in the first place. Some GPA figures may be much respected and supported figures in their own community but when they have to takes stands on issues of importance to their electorates, cracks in that support will soon begin to appear.
After all, what the GPA is after is essentially a personal matter and of direct concern only to their own members. Potential voters will want to know how they stand on crime, employment, healthcare and a host of other non-GPA issues.
IMO, they'd be far better off identifying constituencies where sitting backbench government TDs are perceived to be at risk of losing their seats. I would concentrate on organising lobbying campaigns on those vulnerable TDs and forget about entering the murky world of politics directly.

"I think he (O'Mahony) will delay in telling us once again until St Brigids are knocked out."

I don't think that that is a runner....supposing Brigid's enjoy an extended run?
Wouldn't he have been better off, when first offered the job, to either decline there and then or to spell out his preconditions for accepting the position?
That way people would have respected his honesty and the focus would have shifted firmly onto the county board. Given the public clamour for his return he could have named his terms and the board would have been hard pressed to reject any of them.
The board has made it clear that he is the front runner and appears willing to meet him while he continues to put off meeting them face to face.
The excuse that he is too busy to sit down and talk the talk can't really be sustained when you consider the time he has had to spend with Connacht as well as Ballina, Ballagh and also with Brigid's.
It is fair to say that he knows the terms he needs in order to mix his football duties with his political ambitions. Couldn't he lay down his conditions and see what the board comes up with?
I know he has had troubled relations with the board in the past but hanging the officials out to dry is not very edifying either. It is beginning to look like he wants them to publicly come a-begging. If vindictiveness appears to be a reason for him delaying his decision he may very well face a backlash at the polls.
