I thought I would start a nice positive thread for a Monday morning. Who do you think is Ireland's most loved personality dead or alive?
Sporting heroes like Roy Keane are widely respected but not necessarily loved, ditto for Brian O'Driscoll who is widely regarded as one of our greatest ever sportsmen but not loved and adored by the nation at large.
Martin McGuinness is loved by many people but a large section of the population hold him in disdain due to his IRA past.
So who are the people that are uniformly loved and respected by the Irish Nation?
My nominations are,
Luke Kelly
Paul McGrath
Micheal O'Muircheartaigh
Padraig Harrington
Micheal D
Gerry Adams
I'd go for Bill O'Herlihy. He was widely loved and went far too soon after retiring.
John Hume
Mick McCarthy
Larry Reilly
Lock the thread.
Dermot Morgan worth a mention in something like this surely.
Dustin the Turkey
Katie Taylor.
Between Larry and Daniel O'Donnell.

ROG isn't in the same stratosphere as BOD when it comes to adoration. One was a player with limited talent but a great head, the later was maybe literally the best 13 the game has ever seen.
Larry Gogan. End of
BOD wasn't universally loved in Munster. He was admired but not loved. I'm sure ROG wasn't loved in Leinster :)

Getting a bit smarter ??
Would it be fair to say everyone is struggling to think of someone who is loved
Nationally.
I can think of a few who were loved and fell from grace
Roy Keane - pre Saipan
Bertie ahern- pre banking crisis
Bono - pre tax aviation
Lee Keegan- pre tracker throwing
Pat Spillane- pre opening his mouth
If we are all honest it'd be the granny.

'Matter of fact I have.
The manager of an Erin's Isle u16 team told me that during a match agaist St Brigids, a brawl broke out and the boul' Michéal was one of the onlookers who joined in and swung a few clatters at one of the Isles players.
This happened over 20 years go and I can't say it happened because I wasn't there to witness it but the Isles mentor is a fairly straitlaced individual and he wouldn't have said it if he hadn't seen it happen.
The boul Davy Fitz!!

That's clearly an above average sandwich made with high quality, non-processed ingredients and you'd have to love the bit about not liking this new thing of cutting bread into triangles, bread should be square like a field.

Was it Peter Kay that said triangle sandwiches taste better than square ones? I couldn't help but agree with him.

Absolutely not. A large number of Manchester United supporters don't like that f**ker.
People from Ireland or just loved by Irish people in Ireland?
Those lads from Celtic Thunder you would probably walk past them on the street but they have some following internationally. Been touring 10+ years at this point in the US and Oz.
Locally I would say in this era it would have to be Gaybo or Roy Keane or another sporting hero like Katie Taylor.
