Title: Gadgets
Post by: Armaghgeddon on July 18, 2014, 12:33:10 AM
Thought others might find this particular buy useful...just recently bought a portable power bank off amazon for £22 and it is very useful for when I am out and about. So far I have charged my phone 6 time and still have enough for a few more charges. Iphone users would find it useful.

They're handy yokes to have alright. I got a small one (2000mAh) in EuroGiant for 2 Euro. Thought it was great value. Was in another EuroGiant in Dublin on Tuesday and they were 10 Euro so it may have been a mis-price.

There's also an app called Showbox for Android.
Its for all the latest movies and TV shows. Like Netflix only better and free.
Just Google Showbox.apk and download and install.

I've put Mobdro on a wee shitty tablet and it works fine. The tablet has its own Micro HDMI port, would it only be a matter of plugging it into the HDMI port of the TV with a straight micro HDMI to standard HDMI cable?

Modbro is hit and miss as the quality of streams can be dreadful.

Would be great if you could cast it to tv/chromecast.

Mobdro is superb. Works pretty well for me.

Have you a link to the showbox one. There are a few when I google it, and I don't want to run ANY risk of downloading a rogue one.

Google showbox.apk

It's the first link that turns up for me, although I'm on google.ie.

If you have chromecast or a smart tv, download LocalCast and stream from showbox through it to your tv.

Took your recommendation and purchased this a few weeks ago. A fantastic wee gadget and I'm not just quite as panicky about my ridiculously poor battery life these day.

I went for the green one by-the-way.  8)

Anyone have the Ring doorbell devices? Looking to get one but not sure which one is best for value and tech

I only got one last week in fact. I didn't already have a wired doorbell at the front of the house so I was a bit limited. I got the wireless one that I can remove and charge (2nd gen).

Great job so far. No complaints. It is connected to my alexa account so if someone presses the button, alexa will let us in the house know... plus the phone notification too. Battery is supposed to last a few months between charges. Time will tell on that. Picture is very clear.

Is the Ring system a subscription service? As in don't you have to pay to be able save videos like in the cloud or whatever?
Can you use it without the subscription?

I would suggest buying a spare battery as they take an age to charge and also an indoor chime/bell (if you don't have alexa or just don't want her/him/them listening to all your conversations lol). Prepare to become a nosey or even nosier ba*tard

You can use it without the subscription (£3 a month) but can't go back and look at any videos I believe, it's just a live service

Depends on the activity for battery charging, I have to charge mine once a week. Picks up people walking past/cars driving past the house.

Are there other devices that you don't need to subscribe to that save images?

At the bottom of a cul-de-sac so wouldn't get that much activity other than the neighbour is obsessed with Amazon deliveries

We didn't have a subscription initially but then had someone dodgy in the driveway one time and weren't able to go back get an image of them. Only 3/4 quid a month.

Would the cops get those images if they needed them? The way they ask for images after something has happened, if you don't subscribe you don't have them

We've had cops at door twice asking about a few events in the street, having seen the ring doorbell in place. However I have mine set up that it only captures footage of someone approaching our door or inside the driveway.

No. They should not be archiving anything unless you have consented which in this case requires a subscription.

I wondered about the cops too but now that I have it, it's unlikely it will record many incidents really. I live at the bottom of a cul de sac too. Unless someone comes up my driveway then it isn't recording. I can set the range a little further probably and the motion sensitivity higher but I don't think that necessary for me.
