Longford Cathedral gutted in fire
Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise Colm O'Reilly has said St Mel's Cathedral in Longford is destroyed.
He said that the building is just a shell and its burned out from end to end.
AdvertisementHe said it was a dreadful day for him personally and quite devastating.
Bishop O'Reilly said that construction began on the Cathedral in the 1840 and he described it as a flagship Cathedrals of the midlands.
He said it was an extraordinary achievement at the time. He said that the building was so central to Longford's history.
He said he celebrated midnight mass last night to a packed Cathedral.
He said that it was an extraordinary contrast this morning
A garda crime scene investigation unit has arrived at St Mel's cathedral in Longford to begin an investigation into the cause of a fire there this morning.
Christmas day masses are being said at the nearby Temperance Hall.
The fire is understood to have started just after 5am this morning.
Not a nice way to start Christmas Day
Time to start collecting.
Holy smoke!
Terrible news! Finest building in County Longford. At least nobody died.

I just hope it is not arson, this is a shame to be sure, it was a beautiful building.
Fire, assassination attempts, deranged women and corrupt priests. Something fishy going on in 2009.
Any word on the cause ?
Gardaí are doing house-to-house enquiries:
'Excuse me, ma'am, but did you set fire to that church'

Indeed, terrible shame but delighted no know was injured or killed....
Really hope it wasn't arson
I'm glad no one was hurt and I hope it was accidental and not the work of some sort of an idiot arsonist.
It will be very interesting to see what will be built in its place. Since numbers are down at masses will they be pragmatic and build a less grand cathedral or will usual church vanity take over and we'll see another palace built? I ask as some of the churches in my area have been spending €1m on roofs and upgrades to my horror in the midst of a recession while the catholic church can't find money for the victims of child abuse.

The kind who seems to think that a place of worship burning down is a chance to score points and someone who seems to think it funny.
I have such low expectations for the lad that it doesn't surprise me anymore.
The Catholic Church in Ireland has many questions to answer but this is hardly the thread for that.
If you consider how many families would have had the biggest days of their lives in that Cathedral, some for generations, surely a bit of sympathy and respect wouldn't go amiss. Or is that too much to ask?

Exactly, it means an awful lot to people because of the memories they had in it and shouldn't be used as an excuse for point scoring against the Church....

Do you understand that these people are living in modern day palaces across the world and yet the victims are still waiting for compensation but when it's asked if this place will be rebuilt as expensive vanity project or a cheaper more realistic project. We are told we not allow talk about it because people have good memories in the place.

It was actually me and not Gnevin that commented on whether another vanity project of the church would commence build of a palace or whether the cathedral would be scaled down to reflect the current levels of mass goers and the fact that the church apparently have no money - well they don't when it suits them. I don't believe I have strayed of topic in stating that. I might also add that the church were able to build this palace starting in 1840 and we all know what was happening in Ireland at that time - famine, mass emmigration and a 50% decrease in population. We are now in hard times again (although clearly not as bad as 1840's) so I wonder whether the attitude of the church leaders to vanity projects has changed.
Secondly, we are talking about a building here, bricks and mortar. We are not talking about someone dieing (thankfully) so there is no grace period for grieving over a building as far as i am concerned.

I would hope the attitude has changed however upon hearing the bishop who was over it (i forget his name) speaking on rte I would bet on it. He seemed happy enough to throw money to rebuild a relic of the past rather than a cathedral offering something new to the church.
