One of the longest serving hurling officials in the history of the GAA has called on Croke Park's top brass to do more for the sport in the weaker counties.

Johnny Haughey, who has stepped down 55 years after being appointed Roscommon Hurling Board secretary, said that more must be done to promote hurling in the weaker counties. The Athleague clubman said that a genuine effort had been made to make hurling more appealing.

"But more needs to be done. The top level of the GAA has played its part, but there is always more they can do. It is not an easy task, we know that here in Roscommon but hurling needs to be spread more," said Haughey, who took over in Roscommon in 1952 when there were just three hurling clubs in the county.

[Provincial Championships:]

Lucan Sarsfiled's proposal for a new structure to the Championship will be taken to congress in 2008.

The proposal goes as follows.

Provincial Championships:
Leave the provincial championships as is.

All Ireland Series:
Qualifiers dropped.
Three groups of Four teams.
Teams seeded on results from provincial championships.
Open draw after group stage with top teams playing quarter or semi finals.

Quite a simple format really compared tot he current one.

 

Derry too strong for Down in under 21 clash

Derry will meet Antrim in what is effectively the Ulster under 21 hurling final next week following their emphatic victory over Down at Ballinascreen on Wednesday night, July 25.

Derry.....4-18
Down.....2-4

The championship is being run on a round-robin basis this year and the winners of next Wednesday's clash will progress to the All-Ireland series. The writing was on the wall for the visitors after just 10 minutes when they found themselves 0-0 to 0-8 in arrears. The Oak Leafers tagged on a further six points without reply before Down eventually opened their account. Michael O'Prey scored a Down goal late in the first half, but they still trailed by 1-2 to 0-15 at the break.

Down reduced the gap before Derry took complete control with goals from Oisin McCloskey, Gavin Kelly, Sam Dodds and Kevin O'Neill. The demoralised visitors managed a late consolation goal from Eoin McGuinness.

[Rushe ruled out of Leinster MHC final]

Kilkenny v Dublin 12.30 this sunday.

Good bunch of Dublin players, I hear they were poor but even so holding Wexford to one point from play is an achievement, although we didnt run away with the scoreline, conditions probably didnt help.

Kilkenny had a narrow enough win over Laois on the same day, given that those matches were the first for both Dublin and KK it's hard to know how the final will go.

Obviously I'm hoping for a Dublin win, it'd be great to kee the momentum going at underage. There's a few very talented dual stars on this team and a leinster title at this age group could keep them hurling.

Dublin players to watch out for are: Treacy, O'Rorke and McMurrow in the forwards with O'Carroll pivitol at the back.


Rushe ruled out of Leinster MHC final

Dublin have suffered a big blow ahead of Sunday's Leinster MHC final against Kilkenny in Croke Park (12.30) with the loss of Liam Rushe through injury.

The powerful Palmerstown man suffered a broken thumb in the semi-final victory over Wexford and has been ruled out.

In his absence Darren Mooney comes into midfield. Rushe underwent surgery on Wednesday and is now a serious doubt for the remainder of Dublin's All-Ireland campaign - the Dubs are guaranteed an All-Ireland quarter-final even if they are not successful on Sunday.

David Treacy has been passed fit despite being taken off injured in last Saturday's semi-final.

103.2 Dublin City Anna Livia Fm will be broadcasting 'live' commentary of the Dublin v Kilkenny Leinster MHC final from Croke Park on Sunday - coverage begins at noon.

The February Dublin County Board meeting could decide whether reigning champions UCD and other colleges will be admitted to the Dublin SFC.

A motion from the St. Vincent's club proposes that all third level colleges be excluded from taking part in club competitions.

Anyone else haveing trouble getting into the res dubs site the last day or so? ... or is it just me?
