Song: We don't need nobody else - Whipping Boy

Magic song, from Dublin's finest.

Album: Inflammable Material - Stiff Little Fingers

Magic album, from Belfast's finest.

Song: Redemption Song - Bob Marley

Reggae-fest.

Album: Loveless - My Bloody Valentine

The album that spawned a generation of indie-pop, and some say still does.  Well worth a buy/listen still.

Song: One - U2

This really never did it for me - always felt it was written as a marketing tool, not heartfelt in any way, shape or form.

Album: Heartworm - Whipping Boy

And then, on the other hand, there's this.  Still, like the previous album (and funnily enough, both of them featured in Hot Press's Top 5 Irish Albums Ever) a very good listen, and very relevant.

Break ensues, until tomorrow morning.   ;)

Song: Motorcycle Emptiness - Manic Street Preachers

I like the Manics, but don't like this song - anyone want to explain why it's so popular??

Album: Rattlesnakes - Lloyd Cole & the Commotions

The debut album from Scotland's best name-dropper.  A soundtrack to my summer of love in 1984, god help us.   :)

Song: Another Girl, Another Planet - The Only Ones

Should have been number one - criminally underrated, an account of true love (in outer space).

Album: Darkness on the Edge of Town - Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band

Brucie's best album ever, full of wonderful songs and stories.

Song: A Town Called Malice - The Jam

Decent track from our favourite Mods - I'd prefer 'That's Entertainment', but no complaints really.

Album: The Joshua Tree - U2

The one that made the northside warblers world-famous - a really big deal at the time, and spawned at least six singles.  Here's an album track that you don't hear too often.

Song: She Bangs the Drum - Stone Roses

Don't really understand why this track appeals, compared to some of the others, anyone hazard a guess?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pn_hMvEfViY

Album: Abbey Road - The Beatles

Odd choice again (no Revolver or Sgt. Peppers), but each to their own - decent offering from the Fab Four.

Song: Rebellion/Lies - Arcade Fire

Nice Choice - interesting that it's not 'Wake Up'?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNfWC4Sgkcs

Album: London Calling - The Clash

Ground-breaking punk (with reggae influences) album - some really good tracks.

Song: Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones

Another interesting choice - good track, but not one of their bestsellers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mqg1WVVmgx0

Album: Definitely Maybe - Oasis

Bah humbug, an offering from some mediocre Beatles tribute band.

Song: Baba O'Reilly - The Who

Great track from The Who - brought back to popularity by some TV programme.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKUBTX9kKEo

Album: The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

The ultimate offering of the Manchester Beat, and really the only surviving album of merit from that era.  Still a good listen, from time to time.

Song: Teenage Kicks - The Undertones

Sorry Rufus, dropping down the charts this year, but we'll be listening to it when James Blunt is but a faint (though horrible) memory.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAtUw6lxcis

Album: The Bends - Radiohead

The commercially successful Radiohead album, didn't really prepare us for what was to come - great album for the car.

Song: Oliver's Army - Elvis Costello

Did you know the bould Declan's Da was a showband singer from Galway.  The always intelligent part of the British punk movement.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD_wmYI32sM

Album: OK Computer - Radiohead

The less commercially successful Radiohead album, was awarded Q magazine's Best Album Ever a few years back.  I dunno.

Song: Love will Tear us Apart - Joy Division

Always scores consistently well in these polls, and I'm quite fond of the song.  No offence meant, but instead of Joy Division, I've linked to the Nouvelle Vague version, which (I think) is astonishing.  Enjoy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4efME9Vnlc

Album: Funeral - Arcade Fire

The ultimate slow-burner album, genuinely gets better with each listen, even after two years.

And so we've reached the climax, again.  For the time of the year that's in it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yErhglOXIxM

A very happy Christmas to you all - enjoy the festivities.

Song: There is a Light that never goes out - The Smiths

The perennial winner of these types of surveys - so no surprises.  The clip is the version played by the band at their last ever gig together, for a bit of the oul sentimentality.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJQ6-0zI3oQ

Album: Nevermind - Nirvana

Still picking up the votes, nearly 15 years on - I think (myself) that it has dated a bit.
