there is no way you should hit a 3 iron longer than a wood- a bit of time spent with a pro trying a few clubs will get you something that you're comfortable with and you'll send sailing past your irons...

before you do anything go and see a pro- ask about cheap entry point- what type of clubs he'd recommend etc. Golf clubs are like clothes- you need something that fits you. If you've never played and aren't a savant then the odds are you'll need something forgiving a nice and easy to hit.

Above all remember its something that you're taking up because you want to - and the point of the game is to enjoy it, although that'll not be the first thing that comes to mind when you shank one 20 yards hard left off the tee when you thought you were knocking it 350 yards straight down the middle...
