Paul Flynn really can't be the sharpest knife in the drawer if he can't see how flying dozens and dozens of people over to the US every year looks terrible, when there are clubhouses up & down the country without running water, hot showers, proper dressing rooms, enough equipment etc etc

All Star trips and the annual team holiday for AI winners are one thing. I don't think anyone has a problem with them. At least I don't. But spending truck loads of money on junkets (with loads of hangers on) to play a bastardized version of hurling that serves no purpose whatsoever, does not sit well with people.

The money could be better spent elsewhere, whether it's their own money, the GAA's or the sponsors. If he can't see that, it's a damming inditement of just how out of touch with reality he & the rest of the GPA are.
I don't think the GPA ever pretended to have anything to do with anything other than intercounty players.

I know that.

But the wider population are ordinary rank and file GAA club members. They are the ones who see how hard life is at grass roots level. They are the ones who have a problem with all these US junkets & they are the people Paul Flynn doesn't seem to understand having a problem.

Personally I find Ursula Jacobs hard to listen to. She has a voice that would strip paint off walls. Unfortunately that is a factor when you're communicating in the media. The content might be good but if it's delivered like that then people will mentally switch off.

Agreed. She was harsh to listen to alright.

No problem with the female pundits meself. Some are good, some are bad, some are meh. Just like their male counterparts. They seem to be held to a much higher standard than the lads are though. Wonder why that is, coz God knows, the majority of the male pundits are fookin' dire. Seems a bit unfair.

But he's not that kind of player, there was no malice in it, it was just handbags, sure I've seen far worse in club games blah blah blah...

No doubt the whataboutery merchants and apologists will be along soon.

GAA Discussion / Re: Mayo manager resigns - for defo.

Ask them yourself. A Mayo man was running the country until last year.

The very same GAA players are all able to find work in Kerry. Don't think I need to ask a politician why the Mayo ones can't.

Horan doing videos talking about Adventures, Quests and Odysseys. "Brand Mayo". Some amount of cringe. It's not the presidency he's taking over

He seems to have you rattled anyway  ;D ;D

My eyes rattled from cringing?

"Brand Mayo". He's the manager of an average rural county's amateur football team, not the owner of the Dallas Cowboys. Quests and Odysseys is even stranger again. Perhaps he's a World of Warcraft fan
who are hugely popular and successful in fundraising allowing them to compete at the top level of football for the last decade from our impoverished county rather than whinge about dublin.
Welcome to footballs real world

Should he not be trying to extract less money from people in one of the countries more impoverished counties rather than more? Brand Mayo, sounds like a racket to take yet more from loyal fans. I do agree that Mayo's fundraising from far afield has been phenomenal from a county that wouldn't exactly be known for big businessmen abroad.
Dont worry about us lad, we have plenty of big businessmen at  home and abroad. And by big businessmen I mean big as in the type with money not big as in fat lads who eat burgers. Not sure which you meant.
Another positive is that we werent found with our hands in the till like one of our neighbours!

Not quite sure what the Supermacs dig is about. A family run business that give endless amounts of money to local charities and initiatives.

Mayo have the 4th lowest disposable income per person in Ireland and a similarly low GDP per person. I'm not particularly worried about it but perhaps you should be. https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/news/revealed-the-richest-and-poorest-counties-in-ireland-36636317.html

Hard to know where to start with your wayward posts. As one of the lads said you obviously didn't watch his interview. He doesn't buy into the quest stuff, never has.
As for Mayo not being known for big business men at home or abroad? Have you ever been to London or New York? Full of wealthy Mayo men. At home, who do you think owns Portwest, Carraig Donn, McHale machinery, CBE, Smyths toys etc, some clever Galway lads?
Finally your understanding of economics is limited. Mayo has two of the wealthiest towns in Connacht. It also has big businesses and big backers throughout  the county. Per head GDP doesn't come into it when you're looking for serious backing, we have been blessed with rich and generous people behind the scenes, Howleys and Corcorans don't exist in every county. Look at the map on the link you sent. We are grouped with Kerry. Ranked low like ourselves but with much wealthier individual towns than most counties, thanks to tourism and a sprinkling of big business.
We'll be grand, as we always are. We'll be competitive next year and that's all of most of us are looking for, i.e. be better than last year and take it from there.

If Mayo is that rich & prosperous & has so many wealthy backers, how come so many Mayo folk (including the players) have to leave it to find work?

Irish man does good. We'll show him, bring him down a peg or two. Begrudgery alive and well.
It should probably be looked at as a Swiss man with Limerick roots who's been giving generously to Limerick/Munster sports and has now decided to give €3.2m to the GAA as a whole.

We could go down a route (I think the US has something like this), where if an Irish resident wishes to move tax residence elsewhere, part of the process is that he hands in his Irish passport.

And then if you wish to come back to Ireland as a resident in the future, you need to file tax returns for all the periods you were resident outside Ireland (again, I've heard that the US has such a rule for US residents who go away and come back - hence when they do emigrate, they continue to file US tax returns so as not to fall into this scenario).

However, the above would obviously have bad consequences for all the Irish who move abroad because the have to for jobs, etc. and forcing them to give up Irish passports, just so we can get at the McManuses and Denis O'Briens, etc, would hardly be fair.

A Swiss man with Limerick roots my hole !  ;D  ;D  ;D

Sportsperson writes book. Sportsperson promotes book. Jesus you lot didn't take into Kieran Donaghy or The Gooch when they were doing the same, but yerra it's Kerry and aren't they lovable cute hoors, yerra.

Nail meet head.

The PL interview was excellent. But calling him the most influential voice in GAA  is ridiculously over the top hyberbole. No single journalist can claim that title. Even if they could, it would be someone from RTE, or one of the other mainstream media outlets & not the mere host of a podcast.

Not if you're a journalist, it isn't. Especially one who does radio shows and podcasts. Who are you going to interview if players are giving you a wide berth?

Why are the media so happy just to take her word for it all.

As Wooly was just saying on GAA Hour some of the language used implies something v dodgy and if not true is borderline defamation.
This craic of not saying wtf is going on and claiming that they don't want it in the media when Cora is on OTB, Sinead Kissane wrote a big thing about plkayer welfare issue being lost in all of this - without the fuckin issue being explained.

The media are always going to side with players in cases like this. They are the life blood of podcasts like Woolys, Off The Ball etc etc. They are who the media turn to to fill all the dead air on their programs, not the faceless county board officials.

The meeja will always give the players an easy ride. If Wooly - or anyone else - asks hard hitting questions such as "So Cora, is the welfare of your own ego the only thing under threat here?" they'll soon find fewer & fewer players wanting to give them the time of day.

Expecting the journos to ask Cora the questions that everyone listening at home wants him to ask, is like expecting turkeys to vote for Christmas. It just ain't gonna happen.
