Title: Dunphy - gone from RTE
Post by: Gabriel_Hurl on July 25, 2018, 02:06:55 PM
Quote@Dunphy_Official

(1/2) Two years ago, I decided not to renew my contract with RTÉ Sport. At the time, they prevailed upon me to stay and, in fact, offered me a rise, a small one, to do so. However, before the World Cup I told them this time, I would be leaving.

Quote@Dunphy_Official

(2/2) I intend to focus on my podcast The Stand which is flourishing and has had over 2.3 million listens since we started. That's where my energy will now be devoted.

In my 40 years with RTÉ, I made many good friends and I wish them the very best for the future.

He had some great quotes over the years but offered opinion rather than analysis. Not before time because his limited analysis and research was badly exposed this WC.

Surely an opening for a Spanish football expert now within RTE?

I thought he looked a bit lost and isolated after Bill and John went. Will miss the drama and the over the top reactions to teams losing a game.

Last of the real football people TM. Soccer's answer to Pat Spillane. Circus mostly. 2 straights and a clown.
A large selection of work is available on youtube.Sports writing and analysis. Eugene McGee :" I have to write an article every week. Most of what I write is shite "
I remember reading an article Dunphy wrote on the Munster Hurling Final when I was in Leaving Cert. He was very talented.

His best and most memorable quote "I've never managed anywhere, I've managed to stay alive for 63 and a half years baby."

He never put any research into his analysis. Not before time indeed and was well past his sell by date.

QuoteOn the Alex Ferguson-Gordon Strachan feud:

Eamon: "Scots they're either nice or they're horrid and these two are horrid.

Bill: "The Scots wont like that Eamon, that's bordering on racism".

Eamon: "It's not racism its ethnic criticism Bill".

My personal favourite  :) but all in all I wouldn't be a fan..

He wasn't everybody's cup of tea but he made for great viewing. When Bill mentioned an English article were Keane was called a thug, Dunphy went off his rocker '' who wrote it Bill, I'll tell you who wrote it, the same man who left his wife and children for a young one''

He was box office. He was a shite player and an even worse pundit but he fairly wound the soccer heads up. His championing of Wes Houlihan was hilarious like the guy was Messi or something.

I'm gonna miss the aul  bluffer , his podcast is good, not a great podcast, but a good podcast  ;D

What I have found interesting about Eamo is the conversion he has made from late 90's early 00's Sunday Indo journo/ Establishment lackey to now where he is firmly and trenchantly anti establishment and fully left of centre.

The end of an era for me. I remember us getting RTE in. It coincided with the European Championships of 1984, when BBC and ITV largely chose to ignore it.  I couldn't wait to see Dunphy and Giles in action on a regular basis. I recall that he had a dislike for Platini, and I remember him crowing that Platini had been 'found out' despite the fact that they eventually overcome Portugal in a semi-final thriller. The fact that Platini strode that competition like a colossus, scoring a huge number of goals from midfield, in no way dented Dunphy's convictions. He's been great entertainment though and there's a real feeling of the end of an era, but I sensed myself watching him during the most recent World Cup that his time was up.

Yeh it can be very decent at times, when he's annoying just turn it off but when he's good its very listenable. Football stuff with the lads can be pretty light hearted at times, funny how far up Gilesy's hole he is. Updates on Trump with Niall Stanage fairly good. Think Eamon has a bit of admiration for Trump too, he's not all leftie.

There were times when he nailed it, but increasingly he was trying to find windmills to tilt at.
The contrarian act is hard to keep fresh, but he did well to knock a 40 year tv career out of it.

No employee is ever a fan of a new boss whose first port of call is to hand you a P45. Bill/Giles/Dunphy/Brady have been great but time has been catching up on them. Things move on, time for a change. The lads had their day. Brady is the only one who is actively involved in football. The rest were basing on experiences 40+ years ago. Feck me football has changed a dose in the last 10 years.

In fairness Bill was better than Darragh Maloney or F1 Man at hosting a panel. Only Jacqui Hurley is any good at it and she only gets a look in during big tournaments when they need extra hands.

Yes, Especially Spillane. He has done really well living off the back of those 8 All Ireland medals. He offers nothing.

In general I liked Dunphy.

He had an awful habit, for Ireland matches, of talking up an out-of-favour midfield player as the missing link that would transform Ireland into Holland 1974; Stephen McPhail, Liam Miller, Lee Carsley, Andy Reid, and most recently Wes "Mark Anthony" Hoolahan. Which usually led him Brolly-style into confirming his bias at every opportunity, instead of reviewing the action.

But by and large, even though he was outspoken, he was fair. He would eat his words, perhaps unhappily, but would eat them. A skill that his whiny-voiced wannabe Sadlier has yet to master.

Plus, Souness on RTE was always a brilliant pundit, whereas on Sky he is mediocre, mainly because he could show his guns on RTE safe in the knowledge that Eamon and John would overreach every time and mask any controversy he might generate.

From a personal perspective, it says a lot that I never watched a single match on BBC or ITV this World Cup. It won't be until the Euros in 2 years time when I'll be able to assess if this was down to RTe in general or just the fact that Dunphy is entertaining , but I suspect it will be a fair degree of the latter.

Even though Spillane's routine is tedious and stuck in the past at least he puts a little research into some of the stuff he says and knows what league division teams are in unlike Mr Brolly.

Challenge, Although he was an incredible footballer and I am sure a nice guy that you would not mind having a few pints with, the times I have heard him this year make it seem like he just collecting a check. Adding nothing.

Brolly especially would appear to be in time added on. Hates the game, so no real point in him being there.
