Deise land Model scalp
04 February 2007

Waterford produced the performance of the day when they shocked Wexford in Division 2B of the NFL despite having a penalty saved and hitting the woodwork.

Waterford 2-13
Wexford 1-12

The Munster side's last league game saw them beat Cavan in Breffni Park and they continued that form with a deserved win over the 2005 league finalists.

The visitors hit three quick points and looked like they might stroll home but Waterford quickly grabbed a footing in the game and took the lead when Andrew Hubbard fired home a goal.

Wexford responded with a Redmond Barry goal to lead by 1-6 to 1-5 at the break.

The second half was controlled by John Kiely's men as they outscored their illustrious opponents by 1-8 to 0-6 with the goal coming from Brian Wall.

The winning margin could indeed have been greater but for a fantastic penalty save from Wexford's 'keeper Alan Masterston and the fact that Waterford saw another goal bound shot hit the woodwork late on.

After taking the scalp of Cavan last year...and running Kerry close in the Munster Championship....
Another great result....over the last 15 years Clare,Limerick and Tipp have all improved and contested Munster Finals...
It may take another year or two..but i think Waterford are going that same way....
Gary Hurney is one of the most underrated players in the country, and i dont think he was even playing yesterday.
Opinions?

All credit to Waterford for a fine win yesterday.   After the Nire's good displays in the Munster Club Championship, there just might be a football revival in Waterford on the way.  Long way to go, of course, but you have to admire their attitude after so many lean years and the contrast to their neighbours in Kilkenny, where the County Board still refuse to enter a team in the National League and thus prevent their own players from representing their county in that competition.  It is a disgracethat every county in the country were playing in the National League this week-end except Kilkenny and every county will be playing in the National Hurling League, when it starts in a fortnight's time.

It may come as a shock to many of you, but there is a very competitive county football championship in Waterford with a better geographic spread than in the hurling and more senior clubs specialise in football - not least my own (mutter, mutter). I wouldn't criticise anyone for this - it's not as if I've ever gotten off my arse to do anything about it - but things should be better than they have been

Well done to Waterford. One of there clubs did well in Munster this year. Didnt they?
