Can't post a link as I haven't found it online but anyone read this today? Unlike the Athenry article where he named and shamed volunteers over minor/disputed incidents, I'd say fair play to him on this one. It seems to have uncovered improper use of GAA funds by top officials, breach of confidentiality on a purportedly anonymous helpline and a very malicious allegation against a coach by the club chairman, whose apology came across as very begrudging.

I imagine we'll see a series of these kind of articles from Kimmage as he becomes a watchdog for disgruntled GAA club members everywhere.

Anyone else think this was way out of order on the Sindo's part?

The club handled the situation terribly and it's unacceptable to use that language when coaching u-12s, but tarnishing the name of two volunteers and sensationalising this matter with a journalist who doesn't seem to like or care about the GAA, was wrong of the Sindo imo.

I don't think O' Rourke, Brolly or Dermot Crowe would have touched this. Be interested to hear Brolly's take on it.

General discussion / Gmail question
February 05, 2018, 10:58:04 AM
I just sent a group email to some people. In my sent mail its showing a previous 1-to-1 email conversation I had with one of the recipients in a thread with the group mail even though I'm sure I clicked on compose new mail. I'm using Gmail. Is it likely that the group can read the previous conversation I had with 1 of them?

Might be the saddest thread ever, but was just thinking there that if teams were formed on the basis of the first letter of a player's surname, which letter would win the All-Ireland in either code?

I'm thinking in hurling:
"H" would have some good players: Harnedy, Horgan, Richie Hogan, Holden, Harte

so would "C" - Canning, Callanan - Colm and Seamie, not to mention Aonghus, Podge Collins, Patrick Curran, Noel Connors and Cody at the helm.

but "M" would be the strongest - All those Mahers - John and Noel McGrath, the Mannions, Kevin Moran, Paul Murphy, Graeme Mulcahy, McMorrow, Conor McGrath, David McInerny etc.

Didn't give the football too much thought but off the top of my head

"O" would take some stopping - O' Donoghue, the O' Se's, O' Connor, O' Carroll

and "C" would have the Coopers, Connolly, Damien Comer and Sean Cavanagh for starters.

Hey everyone in the six counties. I have a bit of a problem and need to get hold of an APS2 passport application form to apply for a passport for my daughter. I recently moved back to Ireland (it was a bit sudden as I had to get surgery) and my wife and daughter are still overseas. My wife sent me an APS 2 form(it seems to be impossible to get them in Ireland) from overseas but I gave it to my doctor to witness it and she filled it out wrong( she filled out the section to witness my wife's signature as well by mistake, and it would have been impossible for my wife to have even been in the country) so anyway , the end result is that I need a new APS 2 form. After a few phone calls and emails it seems these forms are unavailable here but are freely available in post offices up north. If I wait for my wife to post one from Asia, it will delay the process further and I don't know anyone up north so I thought I'd try on here.

If anyone could pick up one of these forms for me and post it on, I would be eternally grateful. I can PM you my address.

I know there's a classic youtube thread already but that's for short, funny clips and there's lots more substantial stuff on youtube so I wanted to create a thread for that. Also it hits -30 in the winter here so I'll be spending a fair bit of time indoors.

This is a brilliant, moving documentary about Canadian police and how they treated drug addicts in their community with kindness and respect and actually got results too. It's called Life through a blue lens.

This is a short, interesting one about Ryan Leaf, the unfortunate NFL player who went second in the draft after Peyton Manning.

The Wet house. A documentary about chronic alcoholics living in a hostel where they're allowed to drink. Rough but fascinating. And a few Irish lads proudly flyig the flag of course.

Dylan Moran, stand-up live in Sydney. Class.

John Sweeney's BBC documentary about scientology. There's a scientologist called Tommy Davis who is some piece of work. He needs to be seen to be believed.

I'm off work for the next week and feeling lazy so if anyone knows of any cracking documentaries or shows out there please post a link to them.

Hurling Discussion / Quick quiz question
September 11, 2014, 04:29:18 PM
Can anyone, without looking it up obviously, name (some of) the top 10 all-time scorers in Championship history?

A small clue - there are 7 from the modern era(last 20 years) and 3 from the old days.

After almost winning our draft at work last year, despite having very little knowledge of the Premier League, I'm doing my homework(or hoping someone here will do it for me) this year and looking for advice on players to watch for this year. Aside from the usual big-hitters like Toure, Hazard, Aguero etc. if you have any tips on players who will score big this year, please post them here. I'm sure Costa, Fabregas and Sanchez will be sought after but I don't know much about other new signings or promoted teams. Still lots of transfer business to be done of course.

General discussion / Johnny 5 is alive.

I was just reading there about someone having his 5th kid. Best of luck to him, but does anyone else think that, on a dying planet where overpopulation is arguably our biggest problem(and I would argue that it is), that having five kids is extremely selfish?

I know there's quite a few members here who work in IT and I'm wondering if you could give me any advice about some online courses I could take which would improve my job prospects when I come back to Ireland. I've been teaching English as a foreign language in Asia and I plan to return early next year so I'm looking at online courses I could take that would improve my job prospects on my return. I have a Commerce degree from years back, though I'd struggle to tell you more than 3 things I learned from it. I've had about enough of the teaching and I wouldn't be qualified to teach at home in any case. Obviously it's not the greatest time to be going back, but I'm excited and optimistic about it. I have pretty basic IT skills  - Word and Powerpoint, but I'd say I'm a fast learner. At least, I used to be years ago. Any pointers?

General discussion / Visa for my wife
February 12, 2014, 02:03:27 AM
I'm married and living in Asia. My wife is Asian and we don't have any kids yet. I'm looking for some Visa advice. It might seem strange to be asking on here but I think it's as good a place as any and it's a genuine request. I think from what I've been reading on this website

http://www.movetoireland.com/movepag/papnoneuspouse.htm

that if myself and my wife go to Ireland on a visitor/holiday Visa and get married while in Ireland, then my wife immediately has the right to reside in Ireland and it's a  matter of going to a Garda station to register the marriage, then to the appropriate office n Dublin to get the residency permit. I could phone my local embassy with this question but you can understand that I'm reluctant to phone them about my wife moving to Ireland and then send off an application for a holiday visa. I plan on working obviously, and my wife would like to work too if the conditions of her residency permit allow, but the most important thing is that we'd like to move home.

General discussion / u Torrent
January 06, 2014, 06:45:22 AM
Hey lads, my u Torrent has stopped working at the worst possible time (NFL Playoffs). If i go to Pirate bay and select a torrent it appears in utorrent but nothing happens. It still says connecting to peers a few hours later but it's not doing anything. It had worked fine for years and suddenly it's stopped for no apparent reason. I didn't change any settings that I'm aware of. I even tried removing utorrent and re-installing but it's still the same. Any ideas or alternatives? I'd be very grateful for any help.

According to this quiz there are 34 countries in the world where soccer is not the most popular national sport. I was able to guess 18 of them in 7 minutes. That doesn't sound that good until you see how obscure some of the answers are. Anyway, if anyone (like me) has too much time on their hands give it a try.

Hurling Discussion / GAA Journalism reaches new low?
April 25, 2013, 06:17:46 PM
Maybe I'm being very harsh but I want to read a journalist who has done a bit of research, like going to a few club games, and can tell me something I don't know about players on and off the fringe of the panel. You sometimes get good analysis of panels, tactics and team selectons on discussion boards or local newspapers but never in the national papers.

This didn't make me go wtf? but I didthink it was quite interesting. I heard about the Sterile Insect technique on QI and read a little about it. Apparently many species of female insects only mate once so scientists produced sterile males through radiation and released them into an area where they wanted to reduce an insect's population. It's been used to eradicate the tsetse fly from parts of Africa, a very dangerous fly which carries the often fatal "sleeping sickness" disease. They say it could used on mosquitoes - now that is good news.

This is from wiki  -

The sterile insect technique is a method of biological control, whereby overwhelming numbers of sterile insects are released. The released insects are normally male as it is the female that causes the damage, usually by laying eggs in the crop, or, in the case of mosquitoes, taking a bloodmeal from humans. The sterile males compete with the wild males for female insects. If a female mates with a sterile male then it will have no offspring, thus reducing the next generation's population. Repeated release of insects can eventually wipe out a population, though it is often more useful to consider controlling the population rather than eradicating it.

The technique has successfully been used to eradicate the Screw-worm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in areas of North America. There have also been many successes in controlling species of fruit flies, most particularly the Medfly (Ceratitis capitata), and the Mexican fruit fly (Anastrepha ludens).

Insects are mostly sterilized with radiation, which might weaken the newly sterilized insects, if doses are not correctly applied, making them less able to compete with wild males.
However, other sterilization techniques are under development which would not affect the insects' ability to compete for a mate

Hurling Discussion / Sweetnam signs for Munster
October 03, 2012, 11:11:30 AM
I see Darren Sweetnam has signed a 3-year deal with Munster. You can't blame the lad but it's a huge blow for Cork. He looked a brilliant prospect and his pace would have been a serious weapon for them.

Hurling Discussion / Great GAA names
August 19, 2012, 06:31:53 PM
I have a feeling there was a thread about this before but I was thinking about the different surnames that keep popping up in different counties over the years. I was reading recently about St. Thomas club in Galway. They are managed by John Burke and his six sons are on the team there(seriious contenders for the County title by the way, with the Burkes, Conor Cooney, James Regan and Richie Murray in the side). Burke is a great name in Galway hurling. Galway's best defender in the minor game today - is it Enda or Eanna Burke? -  was one of that Burke clan.

Also, the Tipp minor team had three Mahers today as had the seniors - Brendan, Bonner and Padraig.  There seems to be an endless supply of top-class hurlers from the Maher dynasty.

In kilkenny they have the Fennellys. Weren't there seven Fennelly brothers on a club team that won the All-Ireland in the 80's? Ballyhale maybe?

Cork would have O' Sullivans and McCarthys. Growing up I remember plenty of Hartnetts and Cashmans around the Cork panel but those names have not been so prominent recently.

I'm sure there are lots more and football ones too. These are just a few from my short memory.

Hurling Discussion / The home of hurling
July 17, 2012, 01:43:12 PM
Was watching some old matches from the late eighties there. Cork v Tipp Munster finals 87, 88, 89 and Tipp v Antrim 89 All- Ireland final. Some great games especially those Munster finals and some amazing scores from Niicky and Pat Fox in particular. The atmosphere at these games was really intense especially as the Tipp crowds seemed to spend the last 20 minutes gathered behind the opposing team's goal, invading the pitch every time their heroes got a score. It's a good way to end a famine i suppose and sorry for dragging it up again after all these years but I was just curious about why it happened so often. Are Tipp people more passionate about the game than everyone else or are they just an unruly bunch of savages with no regard for rules, fair play and decency?
