GAA Discussion / Re: Division 2 2024

Quote from: Captain Obvious on February 03, 2024, 07:45:57 PMGood solid 12 point win for Armagh. Have to question how serious Meath are taking the league with them already into the All-Ireland group stage.

Good win for Fermanagh. Kildare in relegation trouble already.

You would expect them to take it seriously - most are not expecting them to win provincial or AI and they will be back to where they were last year when this season concludes.

McGeeney has become a liability with the way he acts towards officials in the game. He has done himself no favours and definitely not Armagh. He has had the best part of a decade and has nothing worth noting in this time as manager. He will always be a legend as a footballer, but as a manager this is as far as he goes. I still believe defensively we are nowhere near there, we have too many decent forwards and asking them to defend is not on, when they should be attacking. He has brought Armagh on in the last few seasons and I am cautious about him leaving and ending up with a Kildare type of scenario. The time has or will soon pass for players such as Grugan, Campbell, Murnin and Forker unfortunately. Some may only have one season left in them and I think a new voice has to come in, play under a new management style and develop a new style of play.

I think there should be a role for McGeeney in developing players at an early stage. This is where he will have an impact.

When was the last time Monaghan won in Croker in the championship?
What about Armagh?

I think Armagh's last win in Croke Park was against Dublin in the league 2022

Theoretically would Armagh people be happy winning if it meant Tyrone beat Kerry?

Why ask such as silly question?

Armagh fans shouldn't be confident.

Monaghan will be delighted to be playing Armagh. Armagh's style of play will suit how Monaghan play and if it is a game that is close with 5 minutes left Monaghan are experts at closing out games whilst Armagh have seriously struggled with this. It is not something that can be taught over a few weeks, its years of experience. Armagh are not going to put points on Monaghan they are too well drilled for that.

We are too caught up in what Armagh are capable of rather than looking at it from the perspective of what we have actually done. Armagh have done a lot wrong this year and turning that on its head is going to take a huge team effort.

As gaelic football has become a much less physical sport with players told to avoid taking the ball into contact, there is less room for those types of players. Most inter county players now are lean, athletic and are comfortable playing anywhere on the pitch. There is much less room for the enforcers of the past whose sole job was to stop the opponent. There are a lot of defenders from 10-20 years ago who would be out of place if asked to play the modern game as a result of this. I can't think of very many genuine hard men (dirty players) left playing the game at the top level.

Can barely get away with a good clean shoulder hit these days.

Why are we not talking about the game rather than having countless posts where everyone knows Forker punched him twice and it was cowardly. It shouldn't have happened. Fellow Armagh fans have to call out this shit for what it is just accept it happened and move on. There is crap like this going on every game, doesn't matter if it is a punch to the face or a dig to the ribs, if you are intentionally punching someone and get punished then touch sh*t.

Can we go back to analysing some of the games.

It was a punch.

The latest Whatsapp going around with another side to the story.  One thing is for sure, whatever the whole truth is, it's a sad state of affairs.

Have seen that but haven't seen a name put to it. Could very well be an ex who is being vindictive - if so she is going to be in for a torrid time of it via social media.

Anyway, more interested in the game, Derry Co board will have to deal with it.

It is a disturbing read and I hope Nicola recovers from it. What the Derry county board do is irrelevant at present, if these allegations are true he should be in prison never mind managing a county team.

While obviously hoping Armagh win 2moro night I think it smells of a draw (15/2 with Bookies). It's the sort of game we regularly contrive to balls up

Armagh needs to push on for this one, ballsing up needs to end. Last week's performance wasn't bad, slightly cooler heads would have brought us a draw. Donegal are not as good as Kerry and we are at home and we need to make it count.

We did not get any points against Kerry whilst Donegal did. We can discuss the ins and outs of it but Donegal are not going to be as easy as some might think. We have beat them once in about 10 years.

I do not like the new format.

It is crazy that Mayo or Roscommon could win this weekend and choose not to play another game for 10+ weeks when the AI series starts.

Tbf that goes for any of the teams that secure D1 status.

I would prefer having an open draw and setup two divisions with the top 8 from each division going into the AI last 16 and the best ranked provincial teams contest a provincial final.

is their a scenario where say tyrone dont make sam maguire group stages.

A very unlikely scenario but it is possible Tyrone do not make the AI.

A D1 or high ranked D2 must not feature in the Ulster final/Leinster final or Munster. If the below provincial finals or equivalent played out Tyrone would not be in the AI.

Mayo vs Sligo
Tipperary vs Cork/Clare
Cavan vs Fermanagh
Kildare vs Louth

Westmeath are already there.

Based on current league standing

Mayo - Their ranking is irrelevant as they would be in the provincial final. Same could happen for Galway or Roscommon.
1. Roscommon
2. Kerry
3. Galway
4. Monaghan
5. Armagh
6. Derry
7. Dublin
---------------------
8. Donegal
9. Tyrone

If Tyrone were relegated from D1 at the bottom of the league they would replace the 2nd placed teams in D2 ranking making them the 9th ranked team where Mayo are omitted because they are in the final.

If the likes of Roscommon aren't called out for their feigning it's always going to run rampant in the GAA. It really does ruin the sport as it is worse than soccer.

Referee didn't cost us though. Armagh were woeful in the second half, same happened against Mayo.
