When you think about it, the games we played against Galway and Roscommon were played in atrocious conditions so Mayo have not yet been able to show what they can do on a fine day which will make Sunday all the more interesting. The quality in those Connacht championship games was as good as the weather allowed, which was poor by anyones standards and that would have lowered expectation and the opinion of Mayo even in oppositions heads, so I think we could surprise.

It was a fine day in Ruislip...

Peter was captain alright in '93, maybe Frank noone in '88 and John Finn in '93

Nearly certain it was Flanagan in 1988. Went off injured in the semi final as I recall.

I think Cork or Kildare and we're out, Tyrone or Wexford and we've a great shot at a semi final. Kildare and corks fitness levels seem to be way out in front of any other team, I think the o'sheas are lacking there and that could be the difference between us and them

Can Mayo actually get Tyrone? Assuming the Tyrone v Armagh game is next weekend along with the 3 final round qualifier games and the quarter final draw is made afterwards, surely we cannot be drawn against them as there would be a chance we'd end up playing Roscommon again in the quarter final...?

Muppet

The subject is obviously an emotional minefield but that makes it even more interesting .

do you post on the galway threads at all  :D , i never seen a galway man so concerned about mayo football well maybe one other pstg, are ye related  ;)

Seafoid secretly likes us but will never admit as much. He's a bit like a lad in school who secretly fancies a plain looking young wan in his class but is scared his mates will take the piss so has to be seen to be outwardly dismissive to her. He'll open up eventually and will shore up in the Big Tree with a Mayo jersey the day of an AIF when the deceit gets too much for him...

I was at that game as a young lad in 1985 - one of my earliest GAA memories.
One of the all time legends of Connacht Football without any doubt - RIP

James Horan has been managing Ballintubber for the past couple of years. Connelly was managing the U-21 county team along with Pat Holmes for four years and won an All-Ireland with them in 2006.

An bhfuil aon gaeilge i mbeal an mhuirthead?

There would be very little in any of the Mayo Gaeltacht clubs. I can't really speak for the other counties.

A player I always liked. A decent grafter.

Tidy dig Muscles. Nice one.  ;)

Childish, but it would have been remiss of me to let it pass...

Great servant to Mayo and a good footballer.

He's no legend though.

He is to Mayo football folk Gallsman - perhaps I should have made that clearer, I didn't think it would become an area of contention...

GAA Discussion / James Nallen

I know this has been mentioned on the Mayo Club Football thread but for the benefit of the greater community on here, James Nallen has announced his retirement from the inter-county scene.
The world legend is often bandied about lightly around here sometimes but this is one man who certainly fits that description. A truely brilliant servant to Mayo over the past 16-17 years - his likes will hardly be seen again.

I heard over the weekend that Garrymore and Kilmaine are amalgamating at underage next year. Don't know if it's a permanent arrangement or a trial for a year.

It's permanent all right, or at least that's the plan in any case. Teams to be called 'Garrymore/Kilmaine'. Garrymore won the coin toss to decide which name would be first...
