Harps pretty much stole it tonight in Clonduff.

The yellows had us at an arm's length throughout but never pushed for the kill. They tired in the last quarter - as you'd expect for their first game of the season - and then a mad bastard combination of stuff contributed to a late wining goal.

It's odd isn't it?

Every single last person involved in sport knows that protracted knockout competitions are a steaming pile of dung until the element of jeopardy arrives.

And yet all around Ireland, all around the world, we keep introducing and extending these formats.

Other sports can at least use professionalism and a need for paying spectators as their excuse.

We cannot.

Well considering 85% approx of money generated filters down to the clubs, we all win?

HQ is clearly contributing to player injury insurance. And it pays for the IT infrastructure (Foireann).

But I did a 5 year stretch as a treasurer until recently. And i don't actually recall a direct benefit coming from HQ during that time.

Say it quietly around the Reds on here, but if Klopp goes this season without winning the title will his tenure be deemed as an underachievement?

I think you could measure a lot about how shallow and needy someone is by their response to this.

If half a dozen trophies, and another half a dozen near misses, in less than a decade, is not enough to keep you sated as a football fan, then I'd suggest: it's actually not competition that you want to see, it's meaningless processions.

We need to see more of this. Indeed it needs the full backing of VFI and another supplier ready to step in.

This thread works best when it's about artists who have a body of work that achieved mainstream popularity.  Thats where discussion emanates from.

From the artists of his era and beyond, the likes of Elvis, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Elton John, AC/DC, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, U2, Michael Jackson, Metallica all find their way into everyone's life. 

The likes of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Simon & Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, David Bowie always pick up enough new followers to ensure their exposure through the generations.

I don't believe Eric Clapton (similar to Neil Young) quite has this resonance in popular culture. You rarely find his music in popular culture, and you'll rarely have a "music mate" who is fascinated enough with him to force you through the initial curve.

This isn't denying his genius at all. But for whatever reason, you just don't hear Clapton on the radio. His songs aren't soundtracked onto movies or TV, or adverts. I don't know why. Maybe his day is still coming, like the Who and the CSI series.

But for now I would say any "top 3" discussion among general music lovers, on Clapton would be a short discussion.

Fair on Sting. Clapton's catalogue is huge, arguably a bigger artist than Knoffler and the lads?

Layla. Tears in Heaven. Wonderful Tonight. Cocaine.

Anyone from my age (46) down would have had to make a concerted effort for  Clapton beyond that.

For all of the plaudits he has gained (earned), his music just doesn't make it into mainstream.

I'd listen to Neil Young but not enough to qualify a top 3. I'd really want to be able to name at least 10 songs by an artist, before qualifying a top 3.

I think Clapton and Sting would fall into the same boat for most people. Not many people would get past the greatest hits side one album for either, I'd guess.

In the early noughties there was a media/pundit backlash against Gaelic Football. Puke football and all that. Yet despite being told every week that football was crap, we knew better ourselves... and crowds were never higher.

What we've arrived at 20 years later is different. We now face an utterly dismal viewing experience.

There is only a limited amount of people on this earth who will travel and pay >£20 to solemnly sit bored out of their wits for an hour and a half. And that number is dwindling rapidly.

The occasional classic has saved the sport's bacon for the past decade.

But that's no longer enough.

Wake me up when the rules have changed for i'm not tuning into another game this year.

Strikes me as a business term.

It stands for over coaching i.e. emphasising a desire statistical success in things other than the scoreboard

Who, where and when has anyone "bigged up" Down?

I've seen plenty of comments on these threads and in the media. They were shoe ins for last years Tailteann Cup and the division 3 title and tipped by lots of pundits to win both of those finals.

They've definitely improved alright under Laverty but from what I've seen of them they lack players who can kick the ball, it's basically the Kilcoo blueprint being employed at county level.

Being tipped to win D3 titles is not bigging anyone up. Not even remotely close.

Even the most diehard blinkered and biased Down followers knows exactly where we are at.
