I think if teams can get over the initial disappointment of losing in their provincial championship and win their first or second matches they will begin to see this as a worthwhile prize but a lot will depend on the promotion given by the GAA and within the media.

I think this year isn't like to see a massive pile in the way of buy in (especially given half of the teams are only getting one game - I'd say there is a serious fear in every panel who are afraid of losing their first game) but next year with the guaranteed three games minimum including one home game for everyone county teams are going to have to take in seriously or they will end up being embarrassed by those counties who do.

I don't know how anyone can look at the Tailteann Cup and not see that it's miles better than what was there previously.

I wouldn't be surprised if before long Division 4 teams are talking about pulling out of the provincials in favour of the Tailteann Cup.

"Well that was probably within five minutes of our defeat against Monaghan, a heavy defeat," he reflected.

"My own performance that day was bitterly disappointing. I thought maybe if I had kicked even two or three we might have been in it at that stage.

"Look, it was probably emotions and stuff like that that got into my head. I was a wee bit disappointed and one of the questions I was asked was, 'Would you rather be in the Tailteann Cup or an All-Ireland qualifier?' So that's what made me make that comment and go down that route.

"Look, at the end of the day, we are where we currently are at this moment in time with Down. If we put our heads together for this cup and try to develop our team, it can be beneficial for us in the long run and that's what our stand is now and hopefully it will go that way."

The novel pairing helped but still fair going for a Monday evening.

Remember hearing one of the RTE commentators in the last few weeks going on about the ref bringing the ball forward more than 10 yards.

Of course he did you tullip, the distance is 13 metres.

Kildare had an off day really, some very poor wides throughout. The difference in finishing scores was huge.

Kildare's finishing against Sligo in the semi-final was way worse than today.
Their finishing in the Leinster final was very average as well.
Don't think you can put today's finishing down to an off day, when they performed much worse in their previous game and about the same in the game prior to that.

Tyrone well deserving winners.

Lots of good games in this year's championship for the most part.

Jaysus, reading through this has me wondering should I even show up to the game. Sounds like it's completely in Derry's hands whether they win or not, and Monaghan are just a crumbling decrepit team waiting to be put out of their misery.

Monaghan favourites for this and rightly so. Playing good football against the teams in the top division, for a good few years now. Hoping Derry will compete to the end, but Monaghan will probably win a low scoring encounter with about 3points to spare. Handicap on PP: -1 Evs. Buying money.

Playing in the Top Division hasn't actually done Monaghan much good up to now...

The thing is that their historic form in the league since they got promoted in 2014 would have been very handy if the new championship structure was in place.

Their league position since they got promoted would have got them in the 3rd seeds group every single year (including this one) since 2014 under next year's structure.

Derry shot exactly 50% from play (9 out of 18) the last day.

I keep an eye on this stat and it's rare enough that a side will win an intercounty game if they are only kicking 50% of their shots from play.

As a comparison Monaghan kicked 13 out of 19 (68%) in their win over Down.

In both these game all 4 sides were 100% from deadballs. Monaghan and Derry got 10 points, Tyrone got 7 and Down got 3.

I'll be very surprised if this game doesn't go all the way to the wire and the winning margin to be narrow enough.

Would favour Monaghan to get over the line but wouldn't be any bit surprised if Derry managed to get the result here.

The Northern and Southern sections is just daft

Can't help think this was dreamt up back when COVID was much more of a factor.

Also possibly an effort to save money for Division 3/4 county boards.

Any team who pulls out will be suspended for the first game of next year's championship, which means they would be out of the entirety of next year's championship.

No county is going to pull out.

When does it start?

Round 1/Round of 16 is scheduled for the weekend of the 28th/29th May but if all 17 teams end up in it there will be a preliminary game the week before.
Round 2/Quarter-finals are scheduled for the weekend of the 4th/5th June.
Round 3/Semi-finals are scheduled for the weekend of the 18th/19th June.
Round 4/Final is scheduled for the 9th July.

How would Kildare losing trigger a prelim round?
Surely it only applies to Div3/4 teams

Because Westmeath are a Division 3 team who would be in a provincial final in this situation.
It would mean there are at least 9 teams in the Sam Maguire qualifiers, which would mean that a preliminary round is needed to get the number for round 1 of the Sam Maguire qualifiers down to 8 teams.

My understanding is if there are 9 teams, all of them would be put in a bowl and the first two drawn out would play each other with the first drawn getting home advantage.
Similar for 10 teams.

If Tipperary beat Limerick, Limerick will be in the Sam Maguie qualifiers.
If Limerick beat Tipperary, Tipperary will be in the Tailteann Cup.
