Murray inspirational as able Antrim progress

Donegal 1-07 Antrim 2-09

ANTRIM proved much too strong for Donegal in Ballybofey yesterday. Thanks to a man-of-the-match display from Ryan Murray, they were in control for much of the game, leading by 1-06 to 0-05 at the break.

Murray blazed an early penalty over the bar, but then set up Kevin Quinn for the opening goal on 12 minutes and from there on Antrim were never threatened.

Donegal relied on the boot of Patrick McBrearty, who later came on as a substitute for the seniors against Antrim, to stay in touch as they played second fiddle at midfield. Donegal's hopes of a comeback were dashed when Quinn and Murray combined 10 minutes from the end for Quinn to fire home the second goal.

Donegal got a goal back when McBrearty bundled home with five minutes left, but Antrim hit back with Murray fisting over a reply.

McBrearty hit a post 10 minutes into the second half but apart from that, they never looked likely to overcome the Antrim side.

ANTRIM: T Hughes; P McBride, C Hamill, L Peden; M McGarry, C McIlvenny, F O'Neill; B Leonard, M Cummings; M Jordan (0-1), R Murray (0-5, pen, two frees), M Hynds (0-1); K Quinn (2-1, one free), R Lynch, D McAleese. Subs; P McReynolds for McAleese (37 mins), D McCann (0-1) for McBride (45 mins); J Scullion for F ONeill (52 mins), S O'Neill for Quinn (59 mins).

DONEGAL: L McBrearty; A Blair, C Cannon, C Parke; O Redmond, C Patton, A Coyne; D White, R McNamee (0-1); J OMalley (0-2, one free), M O'Reilly (0-1), R McHugh; D Brogan, P McBrearty (1-3, two frees), L Carr. Subs:, D Mulgrew for Coyne (28 mins), A Brown for White (half-time), D Spratt for Carr (56 mins), R Dunleavy for McHugh (60 ).

Referee: N Cullen (Fermanagh).

Donegal folk made an awful lot of winning the All-Ireland intercounty vocational schools title. Far too much is always made of it, considering the best young players in Ulster play in Ulster Colleges football.

How did Antrim do in the Ulster Vocational Schools Intercounty competition? And how did their schools do in Ulster Colleges football?

Goals will be needed if Fermanagh to pass tough Derry test

Fermanagh will enter Sunday's Ulster Minor Championship quarter-final with the underdog tag firmly around their necks and it is going to take a huge performance from Mark Henry's outfit f they are to cause an upset against a highly fancied Derry side.

Fermanagh may have had a relatively successful Ulster Minor League campaign in reaching the semi-final but that clash with Armagh, in which they lost 2-18 to 0-06, would have left the management and players under no illusions that they were going to have to show big improvement if they are to challenge Derry.

Derry have also put one over on Fermanagh this year already with the Oak Leaf side winning the league meeting between the sides although Henry will have been reasonably happy with his team's performance on that occasion.

Eddie Courtney in action for the Fermanagh Minors during their win over Tyrone in the league and he will once again be a key player in the Fermanagh forward line on Sunday.

Indeed, on the whole the league was a positive experience for Fermanagh as they recorded wins from their opening three games.

Thomas McCaffrey and John Joe Strain bagged the goals in the opening encounter against Donegal as Fermanagh came through 2-04 to 0-09 while they followed that up with a 2-09 to 0-07 victory against Antrim, Ryan Hyde and Eddie Courtney the goal scorers. The most impressive display in the league came at Brewster Park when they defeated Tyrone, 3-10 to 1-09, Courtney grabbing two of the goals and Lyons the other, while they finished up their group stage with a 3-08 to 1-06 loss to Derry.

The semi-final was to prove to be a step too far though for the side as they crashed to that heavy defeat to the Orchard County, who then narrowly beat Derry in the final. However, that game will have been beneficial to Fermanagh if they can learn the harsh lessons from that contest and a defeat like that is always better coming in the league and not the championship when you have no chance to rectify the problems.

The Armagh game showed Fermanagh where they need to get to if they are to put it up to Derry on Sunday with Derry one of the sides fancied to win out in Ulster. And that is no great surprise given the quality they have at their disposal. At the back Martin Breen is Derry's key man marker and is likely to be given the job of shadowing Fermanagh dangerman Eddie Courtney while centre half back Nathan Rocks is a talented performer. At midfield Derry will look to Brian Og McGilligan, son of the great Brian McGilligan, to give them a good footing in this area and they have the forwards, who if given the chance, can punish any defence.

Ryan Bell(remember the craic up at St Paul's) has built a big reputation for himself at underage level in Derry and without doubt is a serious threat to Fermanagh's aspirations while Anthony O'Neill from Loup has been their top scorer during the league.

Added to that is the excellent free taking ability of Neil McNicholl and it becomes clear that Fermanagh are going to be up against it.

However, Henry will be targeting a good performance from his side and while this year's team is shorn of the likes of Sean Quigley and Kane Connor it does have a good balance to it and, importantly, they are a side who work very hard for each other. And they are going to have to maintain a high work rate and intensity from the first to the last minute if they are to be in contention.

Brian McAleer has established himself in goals and is a composed performer while Henry will require big displays from the likes of Louis Leonard, Che Cullen and Niall Shannon at the back as they look to stop the Derry attack although John Joe Strain is a big loss with the Aughadrumsee man missing out through suspension.

Ryan Hyde has had a very good campaign so far at midfield and that will have to continue on Sunday as Fermanagh look to build a platform around the middle third as it is crucial that they don't allow Derry to dominate in this sector. And if Fermanagh can get enough ball then they will hope to get a good supply into their forward line.

Captain Ruairi Corrigan has the ability to open up a defence while Eddie Courtney carries the main scoring threat for Fermanagh and if he can get his hands on sufficient ball he will do damage along with Bryan Owens in the full forward line. There is no doubt that Derry are favourites but that's not to say Fermanagh cannot win the game. It is going to take every player producing their best and in all likelihood Fermanagh are going to need goals if they are to win although they did show that they are a side capable of hitting the back of the net during the league.

Fermanagh end barren run

Derry 0-07 Fermanagh 1-09

FERMANAGH produced a super display at Celtic Park yesterday afternoon to secure the county's first championship win at this grade since 2003.

Derry had been fancied to make a run at provincial honours this year but they were completely outplayed by a Fermanagh side who held them scoreless to the interval at which stage they led by 0-4 to 0-0, thanks to three frees from Eddie Courtney and a point from Ruairí McGrade.

Derry probably weren't overly worried at that stage as they had played into a gale in the first half and, with corner forward Antony O'Neill kicking four points, they had closed the gap to a single point with 10 minutes to go.

But Fermanagh rocked Derry with a superbly finished goal from Louis Leonard to lead by four and points from Shane Lynch and Courtney saw them lead by double scores at 1-9 to 0-6 with four minutes to go.

There was no way back for the Oak Leaf lads and the best they could muster was a late point from Antone McElhone as the Erne youngsters claimed a famous win.

FERMANAGH: B McAleer; L Cullen, C Cullen, L Leonard (1-0); N Began, N Shannon, N McMahon; P McMahon, R Hyde; R McGrade (0-3, two frees), R Corrigan, S Lynch (0-1); B Owens, P Leonard, E Courtney (0-4, three frees). Subs: J Duffy (0-1) for Leonard, T McCaffrey for McGrade (55 mins), S Swift for Owens (60 mins).

DERRY: C Bradley; G McKinless, J Morgan (0-1), M Breen; N Higgins, N Rocks, Rory Moore; E Bradley, B Og McGilligan; C McFaul, R Bell, Fergal Duffin; A O'Neill (0-4), C McAtamney, N McNicholl (0-1). Subs: P McGroogan for McAtamney (ht), Ryan Moore for Higgins (44 mins), A McElhone (0-1) for McNicholl.

Referee: M McNally (Monaghan).

Mickey Donnelly Looks Ahead To Championship Opener

Mickey Donnelly goes into his first Championship game as Tyrone Minor manager this Sunday when his charges face Monaghan at Brewster Park and he acknowledges that they will have to play better than they did during the League if they are to book their place in the Ulster Semi Final.

"Our displays in most of our league games just weren't up to scratch and I would hope that the team that takes the field this Sunday will play the football that they are capable of, says Mickey.

"It's going to take that against a Monaghan side that I rate highly. They are a big, physical and determined team and with Mattie McGleenan involved in their set up they will know all about us. They had a comprehensive win over Fermanagh recently in a friendly and when you see what Fermanagh did to Derry last weekend it shows the size of task that we face. They have players who have tasted success with Monaghan at Vocational level in recent times and we will have to be at our best to beat them."

Stewartstown's Ryan Devlin is the only player who featured in last September's All Ireland final win over Cork although keeper Mark McReynolds did play in all of the games prior to that but missed the decider due to injury. Team captain Jonathan Munroe, Darren McCurrie, Enda McGahan and Cahir McCullagh were all in last season's squad and that experience will be crucial although they have been dealt a blow with full back Thomas McCarron ruled out.

"The absence of Thomas is a big blow to us as he only had his appendix out three weeks ago. We played Meath in a friendly six weeks ago and he was the one player who really stood out for us but we have to get on with things and do our best."

Ulster Minor Football Championship Quarter Final

Monaghan v Tyrone Sunday  7-00pm  Enniskillen

Monaghan's Minor footballers take on Tyrone at Brewster Park on Sunday evening in the Quarter Final of the Ulster MFC.

Monaghan had no success in the Ulster Minor Football League, as defeats to Armagh and Cavan saw them knocked out, after a first-round victory against Down, but Colin McAree used the games to try out everyone on his panel in an effort to work out his best 15. Monaghan then went into the Shield Semi Final, where they lost by a point to Sunday's opponents Tyrone after letting a four-point lead slip. Monaghan may have lost that game, but they showed enough to prove that they can at least compete with Sunday's opponents, who are the defending All Ireland champions.

Monaghan's panel is dominated by players who were either on the St. Macartan's College MacRory Cup team or the County Vocational schools side that reached the Ulster final, while Tyrone can choose players from their Vocational side and two MacRory schools: St. Pat's, Dungannon and Omagh CBS. Monaghan's recent record against Tyrone at Minor level is poor, but they will be determined to rectify that on Sunday.

Monaghan's chances will depend largely on the players who return from 2010, including captain Johnny McGuigan, Pádraig McKenna, Conor Boyle and Cillian Cromwell. Thomas Kerr is the main score taker, while Mel Boyce and Pádraic Keenan could also play key roles. Tyrone have lost the vast majority of last year's Ulster and All Ireland title winning team, but they can still call on quality players like Enda McGahan, Philip Barker, Ryan Devlin, Aidan McGarrity and Seán Hackett.

Hard working minors get what they deserve

Derry 0-07 Fermanagh 1-09

Fermanagh produced a display full of determination, hunger and no shortage of quality as they sent favourites Derry
packing from the Ulster Minor Football Championship at Celtic Park on Sunday.

Mark Henry's side were thoroughly deserving of their victory, a first win in the minor category since 2003, and they can now look forward to a Semi Final battle against either Down or Armagh on Sunday June 19th.

With nine minutes of this encounter remaining Fermanagh looked as if they were losing their grip on the contest as they saw their lead trimmed back to a point while Derry had the advantage of a very strong breeze.

However, a superb goal from corner back Louis Leonard was to be the score that killed off Derry and Fermanagh went on to dominate the last period to claim a memorable win.

Leonard had broken forward from his defensive duties and when he got in on goal he made no mistake as he thundered a shot past Chris Bradley to send Fermanagh on their way to the semi-finals.

Overall, this was a fine team performance from Fermanagh with every player putting in the hard work that Henry had demanded of them. The defence never allowed Derry time and space on the ball with the Cullen twins, Che and Lee, putting their bodies on the line when it was required while Niall Shannon swept up a lot of ball and made some vital interceptions.

At midfield, Ryan Hyde was immense and captain Ruairi Corrigan was central to Fermanagh's gameplan. He covered every inch of the Celtic Park pitch, won vital ball and was more often than not the launchpad for attacks.

Half forward Shane Lynch also got through a mountain of work while substitute James Duffy made a huge impact in the second half with his ability to carry the ball against the breeze.

Fermanagh won the toss and opted to play with the breeze at their backs in a first half which they were to dominate. With Hyde and partner Ryan Lyons helping Fermanagh get a footing in the middle third they started the game on the front foot although they struggled to make their superiority tell on the scoreboard with a string of early missed chances.

By the fifth minute Fermanagh had registered their fourth wide of the contest and there was to be 14 minutes on the clock before the away side accounted for the first score of the game as Ruairi McGrade rattled over a fine point following good work from left half back Niall McMahon.

Eddie Courtney doubled the lead as he converted a free but the sides wide tally was to increase further with Corrigan and Philip Leonard shooting wide when well positioned.

Fermanagh continued to work hard and Derry were finding it very hard to make headways into the wind with Fermanagh turning over the ball on a number of occasions as Derry attempted to run at the defence.

Indeed, Derry could only muster a few shots in the first half with a couple of efforts dropping short and one going wide.

A well struck free from Courtney was to edge Fermanagh three ahead and then in first half injury time Courtney rifled over a long range free to leave it 0-04 to 0-00 at the break.

The worry for Henry at half time was that a four point lead would not be enough given the strength of the breeze, and he may have felt that they would rue the eight wides accrued by his side over the course of the half.

And Derry began the second half positively with Anthony O'Neill knocking over their first score of the half two minutes after the resumption. That gap was soon down to two points when Neil McNicholl lofted over a great long range effort to give his side increased hope but Fermanagh started to dig in after this and they went on to respond with two points of their own.

The introduction of James Duffy at half time was to prove a masterstroke for Fermanagh as they began to play a runing game into the wind and this saw them win two free kicks, both of which were converted by Ruairi McGrade, one clipping the crossbar on the way over while the other went over off the post as Fermanagh regained their four point advantage.

Derry full back Joe Morgan landed a point for his side while O'Neill was starting to give the Fermanagh defence something to think about when he was switched out to the half forward line.

He tagged on a point following a fine crossfield ball from Rory Moore and then the same player added his third point of the encounter to leave one between the sides, 0-06 to 0-05.

The sides went on to trade points with Duffy slotting over a good score for Fermanagh and that man O'Neill again on target for Derry to leave it a one point game with less than ten minutes to play.

The Fermanagh goal though was to arrive in the 54th minute and this put paid to any hopes Derry had of winning the game. Fermanagh had caused problems when they played a short passing, running game and it was this that cut open the Derry rearguard. Corrigan, McGrade and Duffy were involved in a flowing build up before the ball was fed to Leonard.

He shoots, he scores...Louis Leonard fires home the crucial goal that earned the Fermanagh minors a great win against Derry on Sunday.

He still had a lot of work to do at that stage but he carried it forward and then drilled a cracking shot to the corner of the net to give Fermanagh a four point lead, 1-07 to 0-06.

The goal appeared to stun Derry and a rampant Fermanagh went on to increase their advantage as Shane Lynch and Eddie Courtney banged over points to make it a six point game.

Derry did come forward in search of goals but Fermanagh were not about to throw this one away and full back Che Cullen made two excellent blocks while Corrigan made another as Fermanagh defended their goal as if their lives depended on it.

Derry substitute Peter McGroogan did lob over a late point but this was only to be a consolation score as Fermanagh picked up their first win in eight years at minor level.

Yeah Nrico has hit the nail on the head there, I know of at least two of the Armagh Minors who had an exam last week and one this week.  Given that I only know those two on the panel, I would be surprised if there werent more in a similar position. So it is unfair on the 6 teams who are expected to field whilst their players are doing exams.

Armagh complete superb comeback

Armagh 3-11 Down 5-04

ARMAGH PROVED generous to a fault when they conceded four first half goals before regaining their composure after the break to grab a one-point victory in this dramatic, almost surreal, match.

Buoyed by a brace of goals from Shay McCartan and one each from Caolan Mooney and Shea McArdle, Down led at half-time by 4-01 to 0-05. And when McArdle grabbed his second goal two minutes into the second-half, Armagh were seemingly on their knees.

Yet they managed to dig deep to mount the most unlikely of comebacks. Substitute Paul Óg Grant sparked it with a 35th-minute goal and when Michael McKenna powered home their second goal they were in touch at 5-03 to 2-08.

In a thrilling climax Armagh grabbed victory when Paul McGeown coolly glided a 58th minute penalty home.

ARMAGH: D O'Hagan; B McCarron, C White, D O'Neill; M Murphy (0-1), C Hoey, D O'Hagan; A Findon, E Rafferty (0-2); M Carson, C O'Hanlon, M McKenna (1-0); C McNally, P McGeown (1-8, 1-0 pen, seven frees, one 45), C Comiskey. Subs: S Hughes for White (20 mins), P Grant (1-0) for Carson, (24 mins), C Gough for Rafferty (h-t), P Burns for O'Hagan (46 mins).

DOWN: R Miskelly; D Turley, G McGovern, R Lively; M Hughes, C McCartan, P Murdock (0-1); S Harrison, R Johnston; D O'Hanlon, J Scannell (0-2, one free), C Mooney (1-1, one free); D Doyle, S McArdle (2-0), S McCartan (2-0). Subs: S Cochrane for Lively (50 mins), R Burns for Scannell (55 mins), R McAlinden for Doyle (59 mins).

Referee: N Mooney (Cavan).

Leaving Cert exams start every year in the first week of June and run for about 2-3 weeks depending on the subjects being taken.
Most students would sit around 12 - 15  papers in this time.

I don't know the schedule of A Level examinations but I was told there are spread out over a couple months.

In the 70s & 80s the 3 Free State Ulster counties tried to get the Ulster council to change the minor fixtures to be like they are in the other 3 provinces.  i.e. early rounds played in April and Semi Finals & Finals part of double headers with the Seniors.
The Ulster Council always voted this down 6 - 3.

Then in the early nineties Monaghan minors pulled out of the championship days before their match with Derry(I think) because they would have been unable to field their team.

Since then, some sensible fixture planning has taken place with the 3 Free State counties not playing in the first 3 weeks of June.

Even now its not perfect, Cavan will play Tyrone in the SF the last weekend of June.  They will not have a full panel at training again until a couple of days before that match.

it's unfair on the players - it denies them possibly the only opportunity they'll ever have of playing a championship game for their county in front of a big crowd.

Minor miracle from comeback kids
(http://www.newrydemocrat.com/fs/img/articles/250px/dem-cg2218.gif)
Armagh Minor Centre Half forward, Ciarán O'Hanlon heads goalward with Down Centre Half back, Ciarán McCartan in hot pursuit.

Armagh 3-11 Down 5-04

WHAT a game!

Last week we explained that the Minor match between Armagh and Down was a game not to be missed.
On Saturday night we learned why as Armagh rose from the ashes to defeat Down in the most magnificent of manners.
And while that exhilaration felt by every Armagh player is something they may never feel again, the agonising pain of losing is something that will stay the young Down men, but hopefully only as a harsh footballing lesson.

At half time the Orchard buds were a beaten docket, but Paul McShane's men displayed courage and conviction and somehow they provided the mother of all comebacks.

And it wasn't your typical nothing to lose, throw the kitchen sink approach either. It was measured, consistent and comfortable football played with belief and they deserved victory.

At one stage Down led 5-01 to 1-05, and the Mourne men were sure they would be playing Fermanagh in the Ulster Semi Final.

And why wouldn't they? They completely dazzled in the opening half with Australia bound Caolan Mooney taking a hold of the game with his athleticism, vision and eye for scores, while young Burnley-bound lad Shay McCartan bagged a hat-trick, which is an incredible feat.

There can't be too many players who have scored a hat trick in the Ulster Championship and have lost. But these Down lads will bounce back. They are a wonderful bunch of footballers with an abundance of skill as their five goals demonstrated, and most of them will improve with their clubs while some will make the grade into senior level.

It was a game that had to be seen to be believed and actually verged on the ridiculous.
Paul McGeown and Ethan Rafferty opened the scoring for Armagh before Down's Shay McCartan signaled his side's intent by forcing a save from keeper David O'Hagan.

Mooney converted a free on eight minutes to register Down's first score and within three minutes his side added a further two goals.
Firstly Shay McCartan grabbed his first of three goals, after Armagh failed to clear their line and then Mooney pounced with a touch off class, showing his electric pace to beat two Armagh defenders before powerfully firing low and into the net.

With 18 minutes gone Down increased their lead to 3-01 to 0-02 as Shay McCartan easily cut through the Armagh defence to bury into the net.
It seemed every time Down won possession in the forward lines they aimed for goals and it worked as Shay McCartan rattled in another goal.

Armagh manager Paul McShane made a couple of brave decisions to try and change matters, taking off captain Conor White, and replacing him with Sean Hughes and bringing on Crossmaglen's Paul Og Grant for Michael Carson.
And it appeared to have the desired effect as Armagh tagged on three points, with McGeown (free), Rafferty and Michael Murphy all finding the target.

Half Time: Armagh 0-05 Down 4-01

If a comeback looked unlikely at the break it became an almost insurmountable task when Mooney linked up with McArdle and the Burren lad coolly dispatched his effort into the net to give Down an 11-point lead.
If Armagh were to start a fight back they needed a spark and substitute Paul Og Grant duly obliged with a well-taken goal.
McGeown tagged on another point (free) and he almost added a goal, but St Colman's Hogan Cup hero Ryan Johnston cleared off the line.

Still though, Armagh chipped away and McGeown's fifth point left six points between the sides with 20 minutes to play.
Armagh started to attack, with the inspirational Ciaran O'Hanlon taking the game to the Down team and winning frees, which McGeown more often than not converted.

Down grabbed their first score in 15 minutes when Johnny Scannell converted a free and Piaras Murdock settled his side with another fine point.
However, there was more to come from Armagh as Micheal McKenna, the late goal scorer against Derry, shrugged off his marker and blasted into the net leaving four points between the sides.

The large crowd were on their feet cheering their teams on as Scannell fired over his second free for Down.
Three more converted free's from big McGeown left only a point between the sides and when McKenna was upended in the square by Down's Declan Turley, with three minutes remaining, suddenly the impossible came a reality.

As McGeown showed no signs of nerves poking low and left into the net to give Armagh a one point lead, which proved to be enough.
The pitch at the final whistle was a sight of bewilderment, mixed between the exasperation of joy from Armagh and the depths of despair from Down.

Those who witnessed the match couldn't quite grasp what they were after seeing, but it is a game that will be talked about and held as an example for future generations.
When lessons are being taught on not giving up, or for that matter, not taking your points, Saturday's match will be the number one reference guide.

It is a tough lesson for Pete McGrath's men, but plenty of these players are young enough to play Minor football next year and they will do their county proud again.
Armagh though, still have an Ulster Championship in their sights, with a semi-final showdown with Fermanagh on Sunday, June 19. And while Saturday's magical win over Down will instill belief, history also favours the Orchard side.

Having won the Ulster League title, and the Newry Democrat was the only local paper to cover the Final win over Derry which AFS kindly reproduced on the relevant thread, they have joined an elite group of Armagh Minor teams, as the only previous Orchard teams to win the Ulster League was the 1992 team, which reached the All-Ireland Final and of course the 2009 team, who won the All-Ireland title.

And after the epic battle in the Athletic Grounds, silverware is another distant possibility.

Armagh: David O'Hagan, Brendan McCarron, Conor White, Donal O'Neill, Michael Murphy (0-1), Colm Hoey, Diarmuid O'Hagan, Aaron Findon, Ethan Rafferty (0-2), Michael Carson, Ciaran O'Hanlon, Micheal McKenna (1-0), Conor McNally, Paul McGeown (1-08) and Callum Cumiskey.
Subs: Sean Hughes, Paul Og Grant (1-0), Caolan Gough and Patrick Burns.

Down: Rory Miskelly, Declan Turley, Gerard McGovern, Rory Lively, Michael Hughes, Ciaran McCartan, Piaras Murdock (0-1), Shane Harrison, Ryan Johnston, Darragh O'Hanlon, Johhny Scannell (0-2), Caolan Mooney (1-1), Declan Doyle, Shea McArdle (1-0) and Shay McCartan (3-0).
Subs: Sean Cochrane, Rory Burns and Ronan McAlinden.

ULSTER Minor Football Championship
SEMI-FINAL:
Armagh 2-18  Fermanagh 0-07

FERMANAGH MAY have caused something of a shock when they defeated Derry in their opening game but from quite early in Clones yesterday there was never any possibility of a repeat performance as a sharper, well-drilled Armagh cantered to a comprehensive victory over an Erne County side who managed just one point, from a free, in the second half.

The sides were level three times in the opening quarter but thereafter Armagh took control, with goals by Patrick Burns in the 17th minute and Calum Cumiskey in the 21st minute helping them to a 2-6 to 0-6 half-time lead.

Within three minutes of the resumption Armagh had extended their lead to 10 points as Paul McGeown imposed himself increasingly in the attack and Ethan Rafferty continued to rule supreme in midfield.

Armagh also could afford the luxury of emptying their bench during the second half but those who were introduced helped keep up the momentum as Fermanagh were increasingly overrun, and indeed, raised their only white flag in stoppage time.

ARMAGH: D O'Hagan; B McCarron, P Burns (1-0), D O'Neill; S Hughes, C Hoey, M Carson (0-1); A Findon (0-1), E Rafferty (0-2, 0-1 45); C Gough (0-1), C O'Hanlon (0-2), M McKenna, C McNally (0-2, 0-1 free), P McGeown (0-5, 0-1 free), C Cumiskey (1-1). Subs: C Treanor for C McNally, P Óg Grant (0-2) for C Gough, S Connell for M Carson, R McShane (0-1) for C O'Hanlon, S O'Neill for D O'Neill.

FERMANAGH: B McAleer; L Cullen, C Cullen, L Leonard; N Beggan, N Shannon, N McMahon; R Hyde, R Lyons; R McGrade (0-1, free), R Corrigan, S Lynch; B Owens (0-2), E Courtney (0-3, 0-2 frees), J Duffy (0-1). Subs: P Leonard for C Murphy, E Hamill for N Beggan, T McCaffrey for P Leonard, N Maguire for J Duffy.

Referee: S Hurson (Tyrone).

Armagh 2-18 Fermanagh 0-07

THE weather in Clones on Sunday seemed to match the mood of the Armagh fans present as the day progressed.
The warm, bright sun that shone throughout the minor match gradually gave way to dark clouds as the senior clash lurched towards its increasingly inevitable conclusion, before the skies eventually opened up and it bucketed down as people sat in their cars, inching their way out of Clones.

Although most of the attention was on the senior clash between Derry and Armagh later in the day, the Minor Ulster Semi Final also promised to be an exciting encounter - on paper at least.
Fermanagh saw off a fancied Derry side in their Quarter Final with an absolutely heroic display, while Armagh had battled back from an 11 point deficit to topple Down in the Athletic Grounds.

With both sides displaying a positive attitude, a great open, flowing style of football and an unbreakable never-say-die determination, the opener at St Tiernach's promised to be a thrilling match, and for the first 15 minutes it was.
Fermanagh went toe-to-toe with Armagh for the first quarter, matching them score for score, briefly pulling into the lead at one point, and in the early stages of the match even looked to be the better side.

While Armagh were playing a short passing game that was holding possession but not getting them anywhere, Fermanagh adopted a more open 'kick and catch' style from the start that initially served them well.
However, when Ciaran O'Hanlon narrowly missed a goal by striking the crossbar in the tenth minute, the Orchard men settled into the match and got over their apparent phobia of the long ball.

Still, Fermanagh weren't going away and after 17 minutes were still only a point behind, but that all changed when full back Patrick Burns made an incredible run, half the length of the pitch, bursting through the Fermanagh defence and blasting the ball past Brian McAleer to make it 1-04 to 0-03.

Fermanagh tried not to let it faze them and pulled a point back a minute later, but when Calum Cumiskey hammered home a second goal, less than three minutes after Burns, the wheels came off totally.
Armagh began to dominate more and more, winning the majority of the kick outs and tightening up in defence, which had been fairly loose earlier in the game.

Fermanagh, to their credit, kept on fighting, but when Bryan Owens scored their last point from play after only 25 minutes, it was fairly obvious which way this one was going to go.
Armagh were totally in control at this stage but hadn't quite gone for the throat yet to put Fermanagh down, and when a last minute free left the half time score at 2-6 to 0-6 it seemed that the Erne men might still have a shot.

However, if the first half was a battle, then the second half was a slaughter.
Armagh burst straight out of the traps and scored four excellent points in as many minutes.

Fermanagh were on the ropes and manager Mark Henry made a number of changes to try and stem the tide, but it was hopeless.
With 15 minutes of the second half gone Aaron Findon put Armagh 12 points clear with an amazing shot from distance, under intense pressure from two Fermanagh defenders, to make it 2-12 to 0-06.

But amazing shots were ten-a-penny at this stage, Fermanagh had lost all cohesion and were tearing around the pitch aimlessly, while Armagh kept their cool and were practically kicking with impunity.
The Erne men made a handful of efforts in the second half, but intense harassment from the Armagh defence, coupled with an increasing sense of frustration, sent the ball sailing wide.

With the match well in hand, Armagh manager Paul McShane made a few changes, with Paul Óg Grant and Ryan McShane in particular impressing.
McShane's second score was an absolutely effortless mid-air soccer style rebound kick that turned out to be Armagh's last point of the afternoon, while Grant almost added a third goal to Armagh's tally in the final few seconds, but his effort was blocked by an impressive Brian McAleer dive.

Eddie Courtney got Fermanagh's only point of the second half in the final minute of play, courtesy of a free from just outside the box, but it served little purpose other than to spare the Erne men the indignity of a scoreless 30 minutes.
The Armagh minors are on a roll, and with the added incentive of an Ulster title up for grabs in their next match, it's going to take a gargantuan effort to stop them.

ARMAGH: David O'Hagan, Brendan McCarron, Patrick Burns (1-0) Donal O'Neill, Sean Hughes, Colm Hoey (c) Michael Carson (0-1) Aaron Findon (0-1) Ethan Rafferty (0-1) Conall Gough (0-1) Ciaran O'Hanlon (0-2) Micheal McKenna, Conor McNally (0-2 Frees 0-1) Paul McGeown (0-5 Frees 0-2) Calum Cumiskey (1-2).
SUBS: Sean Connell, Paul Og Grant (0-2) Ryan McShane (0-1) Sean O'Neill, Caolan Trainor.

FERMANAGH: Brian McAleer, Lee Cullen, Che Cullen, Louis Leonard, Niall Beggan, Paul Ward, Niall McMahon, Ryan Hyde, Ryan Lyons, Ruairi McGrade (Free 0-1) Ruairi Corrigan (c) Shane Lynch, Bryan Owens (0-2) Eddie Courtney (0-3 Frees 0-2) James Duffy (0-1).

Just back from the game. Disappointing all round. Tyrone never really looked like they were in contention for it. Cavan lads were too big and physical for the Tyrone boys. Think Cavan will have problems with Armagh, as they struggled against a poor Tyrone.

In fairness to Mickey I would interpret that as meaning that the current system doesn't serve minor players well. Minor teams now prepare nearly as much and as hard as seniors. Why no second chance for them? The back door system should have been set up for minors in the same way as the seniors. That's what I take from it anyway.

Cavan 2-13 Tyrone 2-10

TWO-GOAL Conor Finnegan was Cavan's hero as they booked their place in the Ulster Minor Football Championship Final with a three points win over All-Ireland champions Tyrone at Brewster Park last night.

Finnegan struck twice late in the game to set the Breffni lads on their way to a big day out at Clones later this month, when they will take on Armagh.

Scorers
Cavan: C Finnegan 2-0, D McVeety 0-3, J Dillon, M Argue 0-2 each, P Graham, A Graham, K Bouchier (free), V Coyle, N O'Donnell, F Moore 0-1 each.
Tyrone: D McNulty 1-1 (0-1f), S Molloy 1-0, D McCurry 0-5 (4f), M Cassidy 0-2 (1f), R Mayse, P Barker 0-1 each.

TYRONE: M McReynolds, M McAleer, S Molloy, B Burns, M Heagney, C McAleer, T McCarron, P Barker, N Donaghy, M Cassidy, J Munroe, D McNulty, D McCurry, C McCullagh, S Hackett.
Subs: R Brennan for McAleer, R Devlin for Munroe, R Mayse for Hackett

CAVAN: B O'Mara, B Sankey, K Clarke, F Moore, G Smith, C Brady, A Dewart, P Graham, L Buchanan, M Argue, J Dillon, D McVeety, A Graham, K Bouchier, C Finnegan.

Tyrone's Minor Run Ends In Brewster Park
Tyrone find themselves a point ahead against Cavan at the break 1-4 to 0-6 and in truth they could be leading by as much as ten points having created five great chances of goals but managing to convert only one. the first chance came within twenty seconds when Mc Curry broke through but was denied by a brilliant save from the Cavan keeper O'mara. Cavan opened up a three point lead by the third minute before Mc Curry again broke and this time he found Daniel Mc Nulty who finished to the net to leave the sides level. Cavan then missed a penalty through Andrew Graham before Tyrone missed two more great goal scoring chances through Munroe and Hackett. It remained nip and tuck for the rest of the half but with Darren McCurry and Cahir Mc Cullagh showing well Tyrone just about deserve their half time lead. Indeed it was a free from the Edendork youngster that edged the red hands ahead just before the break.

Tyrone's grip on the all Ireland minor title looked precarious for long periods in the second half and then ended completely at the hands of a very committed and well organised Cavan team. Corner forward  Conor Finnegan struck twice for goals in the last ten minutes to put Cavan five points ahead at one stage but in truth Cavan were the better side throughout as Tyrone survived on scraps all evening. A late Sean Molloy goal narrowed the gap to two points with time almost up but try as they might they failed to really threaten again and Cavan held on to win deservingly 2-13 to 2-10.

agreed. young lads deserve at least two games. If they perform badly on day one they have a chance to redeem themselves

Munster and Leinster have back door systems
Connacht and Ulster do not.

Not a mission should that happen. The Club game is squeezed enough as it is without another problem in the mix.

That young lad Molloy that scored the second, does he play full back for the minors? Just wondering as he scored a trick of goals in a club game last week. Against ourselves I should add which qualifies it a bit.

Do you think losing centre half back Conor McAleer so early in the game to injury had any bearing on the outcome?

I'll take that as a NO then!  ;D

You can be sure of it. We will sell all our allocation and anything else we can get our hands on. As proven by our U-21s run, it doesn't take much to get the Cavan support out. We crave success especially with our Seniors doing so poorly.
What about Donegal? will many travel?

Donegal have the hardcore support that will go everywhere to support the team them they have the ones that only come out for championship but we have one of the biggest number of bandwagon supporters about so i would guess we will have a large support at the final

Time resurrect this thread. Ill be there in Sunday but I have a feeling armagh will be strong. But then the boost of beating tyrone should give our lads some confidence. Hopefully we can do it. Anyone got the odds on the game

PP odds Armagh 1/2 draw 7/1 Cavan 2/1 i have a lot of interest in this game as the winner/loser takes on the Connacht teams in the Quarter finals.

This is a big ask for Cavan against a very strong Armagh team that made an amazing comeback against Down and hammered Fermanagh (who had just beaten a fancied Derry side) Cavan have no experience in big finals and this is more or less unchartered territory, the Armagh lads will have seen their predecessors win titles which I think will help them mentally..

I'd be worried about our defence, if it wasn't for some brilliant saves by Billy O'Mara in goals Cavan could have been out of the game before halftime against Tyrone, the introduction of Conor Moynagh at halftime into centre back steadied the ship, hopefully he'll be fit for Sunday and they don't leak goals.
Bouchier may take up the same roving role that he did so well against Tyrone and Armagh will surely look to do a job on Conor Finnegan who has been Cavan's big threat up front. Cavan have Nevin O'Donnel on the bench and if the game is in the melting pot in the final quarter he could potentially give us a boost to get us over the line. Big lad who can win his own ball and kick long range scores off either foot. Not fit enough yet for the full 60 but he's one to watch if he is introduced.

It's hard to predict but the odds are probably fair; We're underdogs but with a sporting chance. H'on Cavan!!

ARMAGH Minors have enjoyed a great degree of success in recent years and this Sunday they will be appearing in their third successive Ulster final.
Paul McShane's side suffered defeat last year in the decider against Tyrone, who eventually went on to win the All-Ireland title, but in their way this time is a very capable Cavan side.

Armagh will start as favourites after winning the Ulster League encounter between the two sides earlier in the season - a league the Orchardmenwent on to win but they will have to be very wary of becoming complacent.

McShane will have to prepare once again without full-back and captain Conor white and corner-forward Jemar Hall.
However, Armagh are lucky enough to have players to replace these lads and no more so in the forward line.

Conor McNally and Paul McGeown are the sides marquee forwards but in Micheal McKenna they have an attacker who can change the game in an instant as he has proven to do so on occasions.

On the other hand, Cavan's Conor Finnegan will be a massive threat to the Armagh defence and ultimately their chances of winning a second Ulster title in three years. He is a prolific forward with a serious keen eye for goal.

Armagh will be in buoyant mood heading into this game after disposing of Down in the Quarter Finals in a match that spectators will struggle to encounter for many seasons to come and of course the comprehensive victory over Fermanagh in the semi-finals - a result many expected but in a manner very few anticipated.

No doubt Cavan will prove tough opposition after they themselves disposed of All Ireland champions Tyrone in their semi-final but Armagh have a decent chance to triumph this Sunday.

And should they do so, McShane and his management team will have won two Ulster titles, one All Ireland (with the possibility of a second) and two Ulster Leagues in four years.

The Ulster Minor final throws in at 2-00pm and precedes the Senior decider between Derry and Donegal at Clones this Sunday.

This should be a close affair as Tyrone and Down were the 2 sides fancied to contest the Ulster Final at the start of the year. However Armagh disposed of Down whilst Cavan disposed of Tyrone so its hard to predict the winner of Sundays game. As an Armagh man I'd just favour ourselves but with no great confidence.

Cavan name a side minus a Reilly is this a record, gowan the blues. Moynagh fit to start which seems to be the main thing.

Cavan joint-managers Gary Donohoe and Dermot McCabe have name their side for tomorrow's Ulster Minor Football Championship final against Armagh in Clones.

Goal-hero Conor Finnegan starts at centre-forward for the Breffni men, while Cavan Gaels' duo Paul and Andrew Graham are named at centre-field and right corner-forward, respectively. Drumgoon's Conor Moynagh will again look to marshal the Blues' defence at centre-back and Billy O'Mara, brother of Under 21 goalkeeper Alan, starts between the posts.

Throw-in at St Tiernach's Park is at 2.00pm.

Cavan (Ulster MFC final v Armagh): B O'Mara; K Clarke, F Moore, B Sankey; C Brady, C Moynagh, G Smith; P Graham, L Buchanan; A Dewart, C Finnegan, M Argue; A Graham, J Dillon, K Bouchier

Terrible conditions and a terrible game. Cavan fully deserving winners, they coped that bit better on the ice rink and were slightly less awful than Armagh. Complete write off of a performance from Armagh really, they'd do well to pretend the whole never happened.

Cavan deserving winners.. Rock solid at the back in the second half and if they had taken their points instead of working for goals in the end of the first half after the Armagh purple patch they would have had an easier task in the second half. But they had most of the play and showed much more endeavor in attack than Armagh.

Conor Moynagh is a class act. Not a huge lad but fiery and determined and smart, a natural center back. Clarke and Smith were tenacious in the fullback line. Argue did very well breaking ball around the middle. Didn't go for any big catches broke down to a blue shirt very well for the most part. Finnegan is a big threat and there was a buzz every time he got the ball, could have had 2 goals.

Lots of issues to be ironed out before the Galway game, lads trying to chip up the ball and it being intercepted, happened at least 4/5 times. Constantly working for goals towards the end of the first half when a few points would have had pegged Armagh back. But all in all very encouraging and Cavan really needed this.. A great bunch of lads who won't fear Galway one bit, avenge the U21s!

Don't want to run any lad down but Moynagh needs to quit carrying balls into tackles. He got caught at it too many times yesterday and was the casue of a goal doing it against Tyrone. He is a good passer of the ball, he should let the ball do the work. Its not club football where a lad can run through the middle at his ease.
No.14 for Armagh( Paul Mc Geown) had scored 1-1 at centre forward in the 1st half and they lost the game by moving him inside on Killian Clarke who was in inspired form. Clarke was Man of the Match IMO.

Clarke was brilliant, the whole defence did very well. In 2/3 Championship games they kept their opponents scoreless for an entire half..

I hear they have played and beaten Galway twice in challenge games. Let's hope they don't get complacent, there's no safety net this time and Galway will be tough.

Wasn't at the game myself as I was out of the country but its great to hear such good reports on Clarke and Sankey. Two sound lads and very committed footballers. It'll be a huge boost to have them back playing club football for us.
