Laois / Re: Laois Senior Hurling Championship 2019

Four very poor games over the weekend, the Rathdowney-Errill v Portlaoise and Borris-Kilcotton v Abbeyleix games were complete non-events. The other two were a bit more competitive but not still not particularly good games. Hopefully things improve in the knockout stages.

From what I've heard, he'll be doing three sessions a week, two during the week and one at the weekend.

Yeah it would be good to keep Lyons involved, he seems to get teams hurling with a bit of determination and direction so we'd want to be keeping hold of someone like that.

Some people on here seem to have a problem with McGrath coming on board. On the scale of problems we've had in Laois hurling over the last decade or so, I'd be ranking this one fairly low down.

I would be in favour of keeping Kearns and Cotter on board but I don't think either are ready for it on their own or in a duo. Kearns had to step back and take a lesser role after Year 1 due to the time pressures, so I don't know if he'd even be in a position to assume a more time-consuming role at this stage. I think we need to be aware of what taking over a job as a county manager entails, particularly in terms of time pressures. Derek McGrath was a school teacher with the whole summer off every year, and he still took secondment from the job to spend more time focusing on the Waterford job. Does Davy Fitz even have a job, outside of coaching teams? Limerick are bankrolled by a multimillionaire and Cody is retired with nothing else to do. Dublin have enough coaches and backroom staff to even out the workload on Jim Gavin. Mickey Harte is institutionalised to the whole thing at this stage so keeps it going. Most other counties are in a situation where managers get burnt out after a couple of years.

I read a thing this morning about Tipperary splitting their video analysis between three or four different experts to generate the most accurate feedback for players. The level of preparation is absolutely crazy if you want to try to compete with the best teams now, or at least make progress against the teams above you. It's probably another 30-40 hours a week on top of whatever job you're doing now and whatever family commitments you have as well.

One thing that struck me over the last couple of years was the amount of awards nights and presentations he was going to, for someone self-employed that's a tough thing to do. Between time spent coaching Laois and time going to these events, it all eats away at time spent on his business. It's not like he can delegate, if he's not there himself he's not making money. Add in the family side of things and it's easy to see why he would feel the need to step away. I think the key now is not to leave him gone long-term like we did with Cheddar, I think he has a genuine interest in the county, hopefully he can be kept involved in some capacity, even if it's helping out with a development squad when things have settled back down for him.

Shocked to hear that, was hoping he would be around for at least two more years. He put a huge amount of time into it, it cant be easy to give that much commitment, run a business and rear a family as well. He'll be hard to replace. Best wishes to him in the future.

I wasn't a fan of the Sky Deal which will be the legacy of his presidency, but it's not fair to say O'Neill did nothing for Laois, sure where do ye think we got the money to buy the land for the Centre of Excellence? Central Council of the GAA bought that for us during his tenure. It saved us millions. We wouldn't have that facility if it wasn't for him.

GAA Go are showing Clare v Meath, which is at the same venue directly before it, but are not showing Dublin v Laois. They couldn't be arsed leaving the cameras running, the pr*cks

Laois / Re: 2019 Joe McDonagh Cup
June 17, 2019, 09:08:06 PM
The promotion relegation playoff is already in place Munster. If Kerry were to win the Joe McDonagh, they would then have to beat the fifth placed team in Munster to get promoted. This rule does not apply to any other team in the McDonagh Cup, which is shockingly biased against Kerry.

The reason things are as they currently are is because they needed two groups of five. Munster already had five good teams all roughly around the same level, but none of them wanted to be relegated, so they had one set of rules for them. Leinster only has four decent teams, so they get supplemented with a rotating fifth team. The McDonagh Cup winners will be expected to get relegated every year, and the GAA will be happy for this to continue ad infinitum because the hurling championship is churning out top class games at the moment and that means its easier to attract sponsors and charge more for tv rights etc.

The only thing that will prompt a change in this is if one of Dublin, Galway, Wexford or Kilkenny somehow end up in 5th place in Leinster.

Good thread Bruce!

I never liked Kildare, I'd happily see them beaten any day of the week. Dublin obviously as well. I never really minded Carlow until recently but the antics of their football management setup have turned me off them, so let them go and sh*te too. Probably Cork as well, I ended up in college with a load of lads from Cork and they were insufferable. Outside of that I wouldn't get too upset about any other county.

I always liked Kerry, but that's probably because I idolised Maurice Fitz growing up, and I loved watching him play. The free he kicked off the ground with his left foot into the Canal end in the 1997 All-Ireland final is one of the best points I've ever seen. Same goes for Down, I loved watching Mickey Linden and Greg Blaney and so I like to see them doing well. I liked Tipp too because we had family down there so I used to keep an eye out for them.

I would like to see transfers on the basis of 'club of the parent' suspended until they progress out of U-17 and are into adult football, at least in cases where the transfers are within a parish. If the parents want them to play for their home club, and that club is within the parish, then they should bring them there as a 6 year old, don't wait until they are 12 or 13, showing some promise and an integral part of their team at their age grade, and then whip them out. If the player decides themselves to move as an adult then fair enough, but the original club have put the time and effort into developing them, and they shouldn't suffer because of a lack of foresight or laziness on the part of parents.

And that's all Killeen were doing too so that's OK then is it? People have been criticising Killeen since they started doing it but now suddenly it's all OK... Fair enough....

You're not comparing like with like Junior. Killeen proved to be the highest bidders and set the lads up with an address. They were established footballers at that stage. I've seen the flyer Killeshin sent out. Nowhere on it is anyone encouraged to leave Graiguecullen or transfer away from them. It just stated they were having a juvenile registration night, and new players were welcome.

You're comparing the active pursuit of a high-profile intercounty player with a club trying to inform potentially eligible young players in their catchment area that they can register with the club and play football.

How do Graiguecullen people feel about Clonad, Ratheniska or The Heath recruiting juvenile players from Portlaoise town, or The Rock doing likewise in Mountmellick? Because as far as I can see, this is the exact same scenario. Killeshin, as a rural club on the edge of a large urban area, did a flyer drop and put up a few posters advertising a registration night. They are 100% entitled to do that and fair play to them, we give out about clubs fading away to obscurity. They're trying to grow.

Waterford bet Carlow by 3 points last week and Wexford bet Carlow by 10 points so I wouldn't be too excited .
Do you think we'd be as well off simply executing this group of players entirely?

We should do it in public, as a warning to the U-15s and all the others coming through.

Was told before that Picky Maher is a brilliant footballer too, but I've never seen him play. Matthew Whelan played senior football with Mountmellick before as well. With Eddie Brennan coming in as hurling manager, you'd imagine there is a strong pull for the likes of him and Paddy Purcell to keep their focus on that.

I like the idea, should be a few good games in it, will hopefully get clubs thinking about their long-term plans
