Cavan completely lost the game tactically. The gap between the full back line and the half back line has not been addressed. It was evident from the league final in Croke park and the Armagh game that we leave our full backs exposed to one on ones. Tyrone targeted this and it is where we ended up leaking soft goals.

Management have to foot some of the blame for this. We have gone from a defensive style to a gung ho attacking styled team this year, the warning signs were there in the last few games and we will go nowhere quickly unless a balance is found.

That said, some of the tackles yesterday were very poor and several lads on the team should take a long hard look at themselves and ask themselves do they want to put their body on the line to win trophies. On yesterday's evidence, they don't.

Great effort by Cavan pity for all the neutrals watching the late goal wasn't a late winner. If Cavan are to lose the replay as expected they should still regroup to reach All Ireland quarter final. Tyrones biggest concern is the three goals conceded and the manner of how they were conceded.

Were two of the goals not square balls
No, one was questionable. As was the decision by the referee not to give a goal when the Tyrone keeper pulled the ball behind his own line.

Tyrone should have won that by a mile. Two square ball goals against them and they still had three chances to win it. Poor enough stuff from them, even if the match was all the better for it.
Only one of them was questionable, Givneys second goal. That is probably evened up by the get out of jail card handed to the Tyrone keeper in the first half for bringing the ball across his own line.

Of course you did. 🙄🙄
The one that he moved in for "back chat" certainly wasn't a free. Clarke got the ball and the Tyrone player threw himself to the ground.

This thread needs locked and deleted, disgusting trolling of a young man who just wants to live his life.

Agree completely, it's disgusting how this ridiculous thread has been allowed reach 37 pages without getting closed. A more general thread about why an increasing number of players choose to opt out of county football or are retiring in their twenties would be fine but to specifically target one player because they don't conform to what you want them, is not right.
I think this thread is a perfect example of why the likes of Jamie Clarke and others retire from intercounty football and football in general.

  • Dedicating their lives to the sport
  • Not getting paid for it.
  • Having to listen to absolute tripe from people who probably have no clue about the pressures of the game at the highest level
  • General small mindedness

Was the Roscommon player retrospectively given a yellow for his part in the incident? It'd be interesting to know why not if he hadn't.

If every bit of niggle in a match is a yellow to you, your idea of a fairly refereed football match would look like some sort of apocalyptic version of football where games end with two or three men on the field. The only thing there that needed officiating was Tomas Corr deciding to thump Ultan Harney in the back of the head.
Nonsense. We are talking about the incident in question. If what Harney did was not a yellow then some of the yellows he did dish out on the day weren't yellows either. For example, why was Fergal Flanagan given a yellow when he clearly had his hand on the ball? If you're to give retrospective cards, the least you have to be is consistent.

Not going to dispute the red card or the fact that justice was served but what exactly is within the referee's remit in that situation? He missed the incident at the time as did all the officials and in fact they allowed play continue on for a period after it.

Clearly it was brought to the official's attention at the break and they have the benefit of TV replays but then you're in the territory of reviewing every incident in the whole half. Did they? Clearly not.

I know players like Martin Penrose and Brendan Bugler have been sent off for incidents after the half-time whistle had been blown but as far as I can recall this is a whole new precedent.
It's an interesting one alright, was the Roscommon player retrospectively given a yellow card after the break by any chance? If not, I'd like to know why not?

Cavan / Re: Official Cavan GAA Thread

On the league structure:

There should be five divisions of eight teams in Cavan in my opinion. That is fourteen league games, home and away over the course of a season. With smaller divisions it gives the clubs more of an opportunity to play at their own level which would leave it far more competitive. Simple structure with one automatic promotion (first place) and promotion/relegation play off (i.e. second in Division 4 against second from bottom in Division 3, winner promoted/avoiding relegation).

Top two play in a final for the cup or to do away with finals altogether and crown the first placed team as champions.

On the championship structure:
I think the current intermediate structure is ideal, junior isn't bad either however I think there should be a few more teams at that level and senior should be limited to about 12 teams (at most) as its current structure is a joke in my opinion. 12 teams in senior, 14 in intermediate, and 14 in junior.

Tyrone v Armagh in Omagh

Tyrone v Monaghan in Clones
Home advantage for Monaghan yet again. When are they ever going to move games away from that tip?

Well done to Roscommon, they took their scores very well and punished Cavan's lack of clinical finishing in front of goal.

From a Cavan view I'm very disappointed with the result, I thought for all of our faults we had most of the play and if we had been in any way decisive in front of goal we would have been comfortable winners. Not the case unfortunately and we we're let down by some poor decision making (saw Micheal Lyng completely free on a couple of occasions and players under pressure kicked wide).

I also thought that Clarke should have started, by far our best defender and it was obvious today that he should have been played from the start. Another decision that cost us was the one to keep Argue/Givney on the bench in Killian Brady's place at midfield. Killian Brady is a good player but he's not a midfielder. It was when Argue came on that we steadied the ship and when Givney came on even more so (apart from a couple of passes that went astray). I think that the lack of a big midfield cost us today as we were coasting in the first half until Roscommon copped on to the weakness at number 9 and in fairness to them they exploited it. I'm just disappointed that something so obvious wasn't dealt with sooner.

Getting to Armagh is handier for us East Cavan lads though!  ;)

Should be interesting to see Killian Clarke up against McBrearty again. Possibly two of the best young talents in Ulster.
