Club player jailed over match assault
09 November 2008

A Tipperary club hurler has become the first GAA player to be jailed for an incident which took place on the field of play after an assault left an opponent requiring reconstructive surgery on a bitten ear.

The incident occurred during a Tipperary intermediate league match in June 2006 with the case being heard in Clonmel Circuit Count last month. A Fethard player was sentenced to 12-months imprisonment with the final nine months suspended, and the 30-year old married father of two is currently serving his sentence in Limerick Prison.

An Eire Og player had part of his ear bitten off and the offender received a 96 week suspension from the GAA.

The player claimed he acted in self defence after he was trapped on the ground but Judge Donagh McDonagh handed down a custodial sentence.

GAA National Hurling Co-ordinator Paudi Butler acted as a character witness for the accused and told the Sunday Tribune that the verdict 'had sent shockwaves through the organisation'.

Hurling Discussion / New Limerick Manager

Richie Bennis has been asked to step down and the County Board are seeking a replacement. I thought he did a fair job with a limited bunch of players. Who will be in the frame to replace him?

GAA Discussion / Referee dies during match
July 03, 2008, 10:27:19 PM
Well known Down club ref Mickey Cole collapsed and died during a Div 2 Football match tonight. Mickey was Mayor of Newry up until last week and was a member of the An Riocht club in Kilkeel, Co Down. At referees meetings he was always quick to make his views known. A great lad in so many ways.

May be rest in peace.  Condolences to his family.

How many posters have met fellow posters that they didn't know before they joined this board? I'm not talking about club mates or work colleagues but someone you wouldn't have met if it hadn't been for your membership of the Board.

General discussion / Craigavon - the lost city!
December 03, 2007, 11:42:10 PM
Did anyone see the progrtamme on BBC about Craigavon. Named after the leader of the Unionist Party it was the flag-ship progrect of the 1960s for Unionist Northern Ireland.
I thought Emerson went easy on it! No surprise there.

GAA Discussion / Admission prices for County Finals
October 09, 2007, 08:15:36 AM
What do the various county Boards charge into the county finals and what do you get for your money?
Admission to the Down football final in Newry was £10. For that you got the MFC Final and the SFC final. Not bad value. It was £7 into the SHC/u16HC double header. Again good value.

Antrim run the SFC and SHC as a double header and charge £10. Great value in my opinion. Was the story elsewhere?

Hurling Discussion / Down Hurling Manager
August 29, 2007, 06:39:45 AM
Gerard Coulter has resigned as Down hurling manager and the county are on the look out for a new one. Any suggestions?

I think we need someone from outside the county with a bit of experience. What about Jingo? We could do worse. It'll be hard to get someone to travel from Munster to Down for training so I can't see us attracting a decent southern coach.

My vote goes to Noel Keith. During 80s/90s he was one of the best goalkeepers in the country playing for an unfashionable county.

My vote would go for Greg Blaney.Great vision and reader of the game. He was behind every attack throughout the 80s/90s.
