GAA Discussion / Re: Best Club Championship

if you take Cross out the championship in Armagh is extremely competitive, with the other finalists changing constantly. Last year Cross were taken to the pin of their collar by a couple of teams and only a contentious decision disallowing a goal for the Harps prevented them toppling.

You are gauging the rest of Armagh by the fact that they cant beat Cross, BUT CROSS ARE PROBABLY THE GREATEST CLUB SIDE IN HISTORY!!

If the Armagh championship is so shit, how come in the last few years Cross have had their hardest games domestically and then cruise against the other county champions in Ulster?

Getting beat by Loup in 2003, Drawing with Slaughtneil in 2004, getting beat by Bellaghy in 2005 and drawing with Ballinderry in 2008 is hardly cruising it.

As for the strengths of Armagh Club football outside Cross?

2008 Ulster Intermediate Championship

Cullyhanna (3rd In Armagh Div 1) 0.9  Greenlough (Div 3 in Derry) 0.11

2007 Ulster Intermediate Championship

Whitecross (Div 1 Armagh)  0.12  Newbridge (Div 3 in Derry) 1.15

Also I have seen plenty of Armagh club games in last few years, including senior championship, intermediate championship and div 1 and 2 league games.  Outside of cross the standard is not great and the teams in div 2 are very poor IMHO.

Have to agree with the sentiments Skull.  One thing i noticed definately is the cheek of these non-Antrim teams - seem to have a real chip on their shoulders - very angry indeed!!  That Middleton team we played (who were very able by the way and the better team on the day) couldn't smile, some wouldn't shake hands after the match and all their subs wanted to rip the head of some of our boys from the sidelines - what's all that about.  Noticed it a few times against non-antrim teams.  It's alright lads, we all love hurling as much - no need for the chips!!

Milltown - that Banagher team are a very nifty side and they'll take some beating!!  How did you's go in your first match of the antrim league?  Our match v Clooney Gaels was called off - calling it a mud bath would be generous!!

One thing the other Ulster teams have proved though that there is very little difference when it comes to Division 2 and on levels.  We're all roughly at the same standard - discuss

What you describe here is pretty common from the Armagh clubs and Their county team behaves much the same.

Keady and Middletown used to look to play us in friendlies every year and the verbals from the players, Subs, supporters and even management was a joke and relentless at times and once you started to pull away from them it got  even worse. Always hated playing them for this reason, but also enjoyed giving them a good beating every time for the same reason.  Last year Our reserves Played Armagh Cuchulainns senior team in a friendly and it was much the same. I do agree they seem to have a massive chip on their shoulders bout something.

Dunloy beat Keady by 10 points 3-14 to 3-24. Very open entertaining game.

On a disappointing note. Our boys made the 4 hour round trip, to change in a store room, then no showers after the game. To top it off they didn't even offer a cup of tea and a sandwich. One Keady official was overheard saying "sure they won't starve". They should be ashamed of themselves for treating a travelling club with such disregard.  >:(

screen Were playing St Galls at the weekend At Our pitch and afterwards the Travelling team were taken into the club and they all got Hot food from our club.  This is the way teams should treat each other as after all, we are all trying to promote the game and make our teams better. As a wise man once said, "Manners are easily carried"

The difference between kerry/tyrone and the rest is simple- they have half forwards who can score regularly.

Derry/Dublin/Monaghan/Armagh/Cork /Galway don't. They have guys who can do it on an inconsistent basis. But not with any regularity-hence the reason they don't win all-irelands.

I agree with what your saying to a certain degree but think that it is only one of the factors the other teams listed dont win All Irelands.  When all the factors are considered it basically boils down to "Nobody outside of Tyrone or Kerry have been able to win a recent All ireland as none of them are good enough" (or as good as those 2.) And I have seen nothing so far this year to make me think the gap will be closed, although I would have to say it is very early on and as a barometer for championship success, the league is about as accurate as an epileptic raver pissing in a milk bottle.

But it must also be remembered that we are talking about the 2 best teams of the last decade by quite some stretch.

IMO the above list plus Mayo are the only ones with any chance of breaking the recent duopoly of winners (and genuine contenders)

What other 3?  Peadar Toal and who else?

Was wondering this myself, anyone care to elaborate lads?

McGrane will be sorely missed, and was a great fielder of the ball and could always be relied on to give 100%.  If he had been able to play this year it would have geatly aided the development of what is a pretty young midfield section for Armagh, Pairing him with Vernon, Toner or McKenna.  These 3 all have great potential, and I rate all three highly, but i wouldnt be convinced that any combination of them are ready to handle one of the better and more experienced midfields (Monaghan, Tyrone, Galway) in a championship match just yet.

On his day McGrane was fit for anyone, and as someone mentioned earlier he wore his heart on his sleeve.

I for like many will miss watching him leaping high above all and plucking the size 5 from the air, and feeding it to a teammate as soon as he hit the ground again.

Invariably the bigger teams are the ones to suffer as a result since their gamea re the ones televised.

Still no word about Ciaran McKeever allegedly jumping the fence to punch a man's lights out then sneaking back over again to his seat.   Indiscipline needs to be investigated whether incidents are televised or not.

Would anyone care to elaborate on this bit about Mckeever?

Sounds about right for that man.

Tommy is not a dirty player and Sean Marty was giving him plenty of stick - I'm not trying to defend his actions but surely there has to be a consistent approach with regard to all of this video evidence stuff -

Last year Meath and Dublin played in the national league - it was on TG4 - there was a bit of a melee and very, very hefty suspensions were handed down. On the exact same day, Armagh played Cork in the national league in Crossmaglen and there was a melee but no action was taken as it wasn't on TV.

Surely the system needs changed ??

Or alternatively your lads could cut out the shite and behave like civilised human beings perhaps????  That way we wouldn't have to discuss these unsavoury incidents after all your games!!

There was a great picture in the tyrone times this week of sean marty lockhart with his knee in sean cavanaghs throat whilst cavanagh was on the ground. (lockhart with the ball in his hands too!) But sure the tyrone players were the only ones up to dirty tricks the other night.  ::)

At last a Tyronie willing to tell the truth. ;) ;) Thank you ;D ;D

General discussion / Re: Boxing Thread

I fancy Dunne to do it, he has looked really strong in his recent fights and has a different approach to since the Martinez loss.  Cordoba has never won on foreign soil and he will be in for some wall of noise in the O2.  Dunne returns to the scene of his only loss with a point to prove and a title to win, think Dunne will def start well but fight will prob go the distance with dunne edging it on points.

Dunne actually is a very nice fella (for a kn**ker) I met him in Croke Park a few years ago before he was as well known and he chatted away about boxing and the Dubs.

There was a crowd of youngsters following him around and he was signing anything they asked, he was really dead on about it, and commented "I bet they dont even know who I am, probably think Im playing out there later on" (Points at Croke Park pitch) "God wouldnt that be great."

John Hayes at 4/1 to shed a tear during the anthems, thats a price you couldn't turn down

Wouldnt touch that one lad, Its an away game so our national anthem wont be playing and that is what brings out the passion in the big fella. Suppose he could be bored to tears listening to that Irelands call shite.
