Sorry for being behind the times here but I've just been reading about the case of the Swansea student who got jailed for 56 days for posting racist comments about Fabrice Muamba after he collapsed at White Hart Lane. Anyone else on here think this was extremely harsh and more of the pandering to political correctness that has become the norm in our society. A stupid , drunlken kid posts some mindless abuse and has his life ruined. Could the police not just have given him a fright and told him to cop on. I think if people are going to be prosecuted for comments on the net it should only be for geuinely damaging accusations   eg. Mr. so and so likes fondling his farm animal's genitalia.

I felt very sorry for this young fella when reading the part at the end about how he was on the phone to his mother for an hour bawling his eyes out (obviously after he'd sobered up and realised what he'd done).

Here is the link if anyone hasn't already read about it

Hurling Discussion / Hurls on a Plane
April 09, 2012, 06:54:57 PM
I want to bring a couple of hurls overseas with me. If I have them well strapped on to my stowed suitcase will there be any bother? Would it be safer just to post them?

General discussion / Sporting Defeats
September 18, 2010, 03:59:11 PM
Anyone else here find these unreal to deal with? Lost a soccer match 3-1 today and played fairly shite. I think I'll pack it in. Don't want to talk to anyone, don't want to see another football as long as I live. It's not like I'm playing at a high level either - mickey mouse stuff. But it still eats at me like nothing else - worse than getting dumped. Think I've watched too many Rocky movies and listened to too many Al Pacino speeches and rousing songs. Also I quit drinking so drowning my sorrows is not an option. Anyone else suffer from similar levels of post-defeat depression? They say it's good to talk about these things.

Hurling Discussion / 5 in a row?
March 03, 2010, 02:07:43 PM
Well it's never been done before in the history of the GAA. Kerry came painfully close in 1982. This year Kilkenny have a chance to stand above all others in the history of our games. The bookies have them at 5/6 for this year's All - Ireland. What do ye think people? It's time we started discussing this. It's what Brian Cody would want.

Hurling Discussion / Cork hurlers 2010
December 23, 2009, 05:23:38 AM
I was wondering if any of the Cork lads on here might be able to tell us how they are looking for 2010. I'd love to see the Cork hurlers back to their brilliant best next year but the odds are against them. They lost a lot of ground during Gerald McCarthy's 2 year mismanagement stint and a lot of the legends are no spring chickens anymore. There doesn't seem to be as much underage talent flowing through as in the other top counties - another indictment of the hurling administation in Cork, so it's going to be very difficult to challenge the likes of Kilkenny and Tipp next year.

Cork and Kilkenny games were always tight and nerve - shredding  from 03 - 06, but obviously Kilkenny stormed ahead after that to be become the undisputed heavyweight champs and the greatest team of all time, while Cork just started going around in circles. My question for the Cork lads is, now that ye have the right man in charge, can the damage be undone?

General discussion / The Pecker Dunne/ Damo
September 25, 2008, 11:16:48 PM
Just watching some clips of The Pecker on youtube. I can't believe I've never heard this music before now. It's really moving stuff - Sullivan's John, t**ker's Lullaby, Portlaoise Jail etc. - these songs are classics. I only came across them because of Damien Dempsey's brilliant new album "The Rocky Road". Makes you so proud to be Irish when you listen to this music which has been forgotten for far too long. Fair play to Damo for bringing it to a new generation. I've been to see him 3 times live and he lifts the roof off - singing it loud and saying it exactly as he sees it in a thick dublin accent - listen to songs like colony, patience and serious, and see what you think. IMO he's the best thing in music today.

Other Irish songs I've come across recently that are unbelievably good are "The Foggy Dew" - Sinead O Connor's version is my favourite, and "The Contender" sang by Christy Moore. That one was written by Jimmy McCarthy about his fellow Corkman Jack Doyle, the great boxing talent and singer nicknamed "The Gorgeous Gael", who sadly became a chronic alcoholic and died penniless and homeless in London.
