Hi all,

I am currently conducting a survey on the attitudes of GAA coaches towards Sports Psychology as part of a Masters study.

If anyone reading this is a GAA coach and has 5 minutes to spare, would value your input here - https://forms.gle/HvjzUqVT7aA6fz9P7

Thanks in advance,

General discussion / Re: Podcasts
March 31, 2018, 12:37:17 PM
Second Captains are the standard bearer in Ireland in my opinion and would give particular praise to Richie Sadliers' series of interviews called 'The Players Chair' as he gets a range of guests from all different sports. I find podcasts a great way to learn about other sports and niche topics too that the mainstream media don't always cover.

They are by no means perfect but if you are after something more GAA focused, we've done 19 one-on-one interviews with GAA players on the Real Talks podcast now. They usually last for an hour or so and focus on sport, life, passions and life outside the sporting bubble - we just tried to show a different side to GAA players. Kevin McManamon, Eamon McGee, Oisin McConville, Brendan Maher, Cora Staunton and Philly McMahon have been the most popular episodes so far. If interested, you can find them at RealTalks.ie or search 'Real Talks' into your podcast app.

Folks, just posting this up as a few people have got in touch with us directly to say they found out about the podcast here and have really enjoyed it. We haven't posted episodes to here in a while as didn't want to be clogging the board up.

In search for answers about himself and his relationship with the game, Diarmuid Lyng went and travelled the world. On that journey, which included a stay in a buddhist temple, he found some of the answers he was looking for but was also left with many more questions.

This week, he sat down with Alan O'Mara to talk about life now in West Kerry and to reflect on many of the life lessons he has learned along the way - http://realtalks.ie/podcast/episode-17-diarmuid-lyng/

Our podcast has been listened to over 50,000 times now and has featured Kevin McManamon, Brendan Maher, Oisin McConville, Briege Corkery and more. Go to www.RealTalks.ie to learn more or search for 'Real Talks' on iTunes or SoundCloud.

Kildare
Aired: October 1st, 2017
Duration: 1:05:02
Twitter: Follow Dermot Earley
Subscribe to Real Talks on  iTunes Soundcloud Stitcher

Kildare GAA legend Dermot Earley was a fascinating guest on the latest instalment of the podcast.

New episode here for anyone interested! https://buff.ly/2g2Nqz4

As well as recounting some good and bad times in his Kildare jersey, Dermot Earley was also open and honest about being diagnosed with testicular cancer in his early twenties, what it was like to grow up in the army, serve in unstable countries like Bosnia and Lebanon and the impact of the untimely passing of his father, Dermot Snr, seven years ago.

He even retold the story of a time when he was invited to Manchester United and ended up in the physio room beside Diego Forlan and Carlos Queiroz.

Dermot is the current CEO of the Gaelic Players Association and spoke about why he is so passionate about bettering the lives of the inter-county player on and off the field.

Back in 2001, Alan Kerins had the rare experience of playing in both the All-Ireland football and hurling finals for Galway.

An All-Ireland winner he may be, but his selfless passion to help others will be his true legacy. Only an authentic leader could deliver €15million+ to better peoples lives in Africa. This chat inspired me. I hope it can do the same for you in some small way. Thank you for sharing your journey on the podcast Alan.

Find it on iTunes or Soundcloud by searching 'Real Talks or by clicking here: http://realtalks.ie/podcast/episode-13-alan-kerins/ .'🎧👂🏼

"The buzz of playing in Croke Park...It's hard to match that but you have to try and you have to find other passions that gives you purpose."

Hurling Discussion / Re: Kilkenny
September 16, 2017, 05:14:48 PM
For anyone interested in podcasts lads, we had Michael Fennelly on for an hour this week.

The 2011 Hurler of the Year was incredibly honest about the impact his love of hurling has had on his body and mind and the many challenges he has had to overcome.

Now in the latter end of his career at 32, he has changed jobs, studied leadership, started lecturing and began a journey into the entrepreneurial world. There is zero doubt that Michael Fennelly is much more than just a hurler.

Have posted a few podcasts on the board this year lads, know some of you have listened and enjoyed them with the likes of Kevin McManamon, Jamie Clarke, Brendan Maher, Noel Connors and others.

The latest episode is with Jamie Wall and can be listened to here: http://realtalks.ie/podcast/episode-10-jamie-wall/

A former underage player for Cork in both codes, Jamie was a prospect that had high hopes of representing his county for many years to come but back in 2014 his life changed after an infection resulted in the loss of power in his legs.

During this conversation, Jamie talks openly and honestly about the ups and downs of the last three years as he has had to adapt to life in a chair and rise to numerous challenges.

He is now currently enjoying an extended break in a new city while also managing a GAA team on the west coast of America – an opportunity that arose after he coached Mary I to the Fitzgibbon Cup earlier in 2017.

A really fascinating character.

GAA Discussion / Re: We Are Ulster
June 13, 2017, 10:42:06 PM
I'd be a regular listener as would know the guys well presenting it- it is nice to get the Ulster focus as too much going on at this time of year and lots of them cover all the games without covering anything at all. Would highly recommend you share it with friends etc as it can be hard to independent podcast to make inroads against the bigger operations, even though you can find some really good ones!

I posted my own podcast a few months back - some of you might enjoy it but it won't be for everyone as very little game specific stuff. . Just an hour long chat with individual players about life on and off the field. Of the Ulster lads Eamon McGee and Jamie Clarke have been on, along with the likes of Kevin McManamon, Brendan Maher, Niall McNamme, Noel Connors, Cora Staunton and Michael Quinn.

Check it out here if you are interested. Will be launching a second series next month.

For anyone interested, Eamon McGee gave a very open and insightful interview this week about about the difficulties that retiring brought and other struggles he went through in earlier years involving panic attacks, anxiety and drinking.

You can listen to the interview in full here - http://realtalks.ie/podcast/episode-6-eamon-mcgee/

Latest episode is out now for anyone that is interested in podcasts!

In 2012, Offaly forward Niall McNamee publicly admitted he owed around €80,000 as a result of a gambling addiction, accepted that he needed professional help and so began, his journey towards recovery.

It is now 5 years since Niall has made a bet and his life has been transformed. We sat down to chat about many lessons he has learned along the way and what it is like to be able to look at himself in the mirror now and be proud of what he sees – because for many years he didn't and gambling became his form of escapism from everyday life.

He burst onto the inter-county scene as a 17 year old back in 2003 when he made his championship debut, the week before his Leaving Cert began. Since then he has become Offaly's talisman, missing just one championship game over 14 campaigns, but while Niall has been a beacon of consistency on the field, a large portion of his football career was spent battling a chronic gambling addiction.

Having spent the large majority of 2016 in New York City, Jamie Clarke is back in Ireland and once again strutting his stuff in a Armagh jersey.

Renowned for his individual style on the pitch, Jamie is one of the most talented forwards and interesting personalities the modern game has produced.

Over the course of the hour, we chat about the positive impact that travelling has had on his life and outlook, the importance of being authentic and not submitting to stereotypes, and how now, at 27 years of age, he felt a magnetic pull that lured him home from America because ultimately he wants to help leave Armagh football in a better place.

Life has a habit of throwing arrows at us, but shot a cannonball at Wicklow's John McGrath.

In the third episode of the Real Talks Podcast, John's perspective, determination and borderline beligerence shine through as he talks about his battle with leukemia.

As John says, the word cancer itself isn't a nice one. It's one constantly associated with death and negative stories. Like all those who battle the disease, John's story is a personal one. This one, like so many others is an inspiration to anyone who has faced adversity.

John's story is one that offers hope to anyone who knows the struggles of battling any illness. His inspirational positivity and determination are evident throughout this revealing and intimate conversation.

Diagnosed in 2011, Wicklow's John McGrath is now playing his 11th season at inter-county level. Hear the story from the man himself. An incredibly inspiring character. Listen to the piece in full here: http://realtalks.ie/posts/episode-3-john-mcgrath/
