All vaccines are designed to train the immune system, so they have to do something.

Quote from: gallsman on December 07, 2024, 03:46:17 PMCork have it right. Premier Senior, Senior A, Premier Intermediate, Intermediate A etc. albeit they have to accommodate the sheer number of clubs. The "A" champions don't go into the province. I don't think anyone will be looking to "force" them to do anything of the sort.

I know a few Newcestown boys who did the Senior A double in Cork last year, so playing Premier Senior hurling and football this year. If they'd been in the Munster intermediate, as the second tier champions, they'd have handed out plenty of hockeyings.

Cork can keep their structure in the county - just put forward the winners of their 2nd and 3rd tiers into th Munster . It's not as if the Cork teams that they are putting forward for the intermediate and juniot are having all that much success in Munster.

Personally I think adding a 4th (and possibly 5th) tier to the provincial and All-Ireland series would help make things much more fair. it seems somewhat mad for instance that Waterford has 5 tiers of football levels - Senior/Intemediate/Junior A/Junior B/Junior C while the provincial and All-Irelands only have 3. When you see how big the intermediate and junior competitions are for clubs who do get to take part in them, I think having more tiers at provincial and All-Ireland level is a nobrainer.

However, it is complicated by the strength of hurling or otherwise in a county. In a hurling county a club may have a football team but not take it too seriously, hence a lot of Junior Bs etc.

Again, just throw out shite like this but cry your lamps out when so much as a murmur is raised by someone in the south not wanting Mary Lou to be their overlord.

That's where I think SF need to step back a bit of the United Ireland bit.

Lets get the UI first before we consider the socialist republic bit.

We want a democratic republic, and if the people of Ireland don't want socialism then that is they should get. The place for arguing about socialism is in the elections held at that time.

Quote from: trileacman on December 06, 2024, 12:20:32 PMCan we agree that a border poll held in the next 5 years would be very likely to be defeated?

I mean if I were a Unionist I would want a border poll now to bury the issue for a few decades, much like what has happened in Scotland. I really think if SF, as the largest party in the Assembly and with a Labour SOS, really forced the issue they would get a border poll.

It looks win/win for the Labour Party too. Lose the border poll and you cut loose one of your biggest budget liabilities without much political blowback. Win the border poll and they shore up their little Englander vote whilst simultaneously appeasing nationalists (by arranging a poll) and Unionists (by winning it).

A border poll will only succeed if a lot of work has been done to establish what exactly you are voting with details and not just generalities. However, you cannot bury it for generations, the issue will not go away.
And we in Ireland should not allow the British clear off without a proper settlement of the finances in terms of civil service pensions and the like.

Quote from: Truthsayer on December 06, 2024, 12:42:29 PMGo back and read through his comments. A total partitionist and in response to Martin's comments selects IRA killings in the '26 counties' (ignoring Dublin bombings and many many other Loyalist/British State atrocities) to say Martin does have a point.

Martin was out of order with these comments, but that is a small thing in the overall situation.

Anyone see the Putin supported Romanian presidential candidate interviewed on Sky? He doesn't believe in Covid because you cannot see the virus! He didn't say whether he had used a microscope or reading glasses.
There was a time when ignorant people were slightly abashed about it, rather than doing TV interviews to show off their ignorance.

Tubberman's entire argument is based around the idea than a large amount of natioanlists don't want a united Ireland and don't want a boder poll. Two completely fabricated claims which are both blown out of the water by the polling data. So how does that mean he's talking sense, Rossfan?

A lot of northern nationalists want a united Ireland in the same way I want to lose weight or Kildare want to win an All Ireland, i.e. they want it but are not willing to put in a bit of effort to get it.
A border poll without that effort will not work.

Fair play to Silverbridge, which is not a densely populated place.

Post GFA there can be UI, but the spirit of that agreement is that this will come when when people in NI want it. People in the 6 counties have to put their hand up and say that they want in. But we don't get that, what we get is so called nationalists and republicans saying that they have nothing in common with the rest of country and that the 26county voters are stupid uncaring people. It seems widely believed in the 6 counties that Dublin should spend more money there, but propose any revenue raising measure and there isn't much interest in self help. SF are more interested that they be in power than any UI where they are not in power. Now the main issue with a UI is economics, but SF have no interest in economics or at least the earning side of it, they have some interest in the spending side. Without some mature leadership in the 6 counties things will indeed remain as they are.

Quote from: snoopdog on December 05, 2024, 11:26:03 AMThanks all for the suggestions. The building I'd prob end up having to do ;D . But yep def want something that can be upgraded and added too so I don't have to spend another fortune in 2 years time.

In this respect a desktop machine is more flexible than laptops which are something of a package (although I did add more RAM to one) and things like monitors can do for years.

At least as important a factor, though, was the consensus sentiment that football needed help. For all that we had a great championship with unexpected winners, there is a crisis for the GAA in the collapse of attendance, especially in Leinster and an improved game may not be a comprehensive response. But it will be a start.

I'm not sure that any change in the rules will help the Leinster championship.

Quote from: Substandard on December 05, 2024, 01:14:22 AMI don't know, I suppose the best thing to do is keep yourself as informed as you need to be and keep an open mind, but try not to over-think things.  Easier said than done, but the world has managed OK in the grand scheme of things up to now, so there's no reason it won't continue to do so.
I'm just too tired to handle much more chaos...

The point is that modern technology also allow you be informed. In Brexit there were things said that could have been debunked on Google in 20 seconds, but voters either wanted to believe something that suited their prejudices or else they were too lazy to bother checking, not least because Brexit wasn't that important to a lot of people. I think that democracies need some regulation of this, you are entitled to your opinion but facts should be stated clearly.

Quote from: snoopdog on December 04, 2024, 09:42:49 PMHi. Looking for a gaming pc for a 14 yr old.  It will be his 1st. Not looking at spending a fortune but want something good that he won't be looking for an upgrade in 18 mths. Are acer and lonovo the big brands fornthis. Went to Harvey norman but the sales guy was a bit shit. The young lad says the graphics are the big.thing?
He jas looked at vibox and they're available on amazon but what comeback do I have on amazon if it has to be returned.
All ideals welcome. Hoping to not spend more than 1,600 euros.

1600 will get you a lot of spec. Would you/he consider building it yourself? If so, you can save a lot. And belive me it's not complicated. If you can put together a lego set, you can build a gaming PC. I've built 2 for the kids and enjoyed the process. It was a fun thing to do with them too.

I'd start here: https://www.boards.ie/categories/pc-building-upgrading

Some very knowledgeable people who will steer you right. And if you want to the amateur perspective, feel free to message me.

Also, if you are in building frame of mind then upgrading the machine in a couple of years is replacing one element, not buying a new machine.

Quote from: thewobbler on December 04, 2024, 09:04:24 PMIt's all the direct result of the destruction of the written word, the worst of the many evil byproducts of the internet/information age.

The dissemination of information was never a perfect process, but not so long ago, it took time, knowledge and diligence to become published in any sphere. The overseers of the written word were (largely) aware that they had a duty in accuracy. Hence when they held someone accountable, it was trusted, and it would destroy a career. So people innately had to be more careful in their actions.

Whereas nowadays the majority of published content (including this post) is absolute nonsense. Sources cannot be trusted. Expertise is challenged by all and any. The churn is too fast for anyone to process. And a result the written word no longer matters, and nobody can ever be held accountable.

Well said, and of course this particular post is not nonsense. The point is though that we can as anonymous posters type in something in 3 minutes and this is altogether a more ephemeral process than publishing in the traditional sense. Some people do not seem to see the difference.
