What is commendable about modern Ireland? Governed by the greedy, with huge gap between rich and poor, crimelords kill with impunity, atheism rife, fawning to British and American governments?

You could say that about most countries though.

And there's worse things people could be than atheist.

Non sectarian, good education system, vibrant cultural scene, friendly people, decent social welfare, good place to grow up, trouble free in July

Buddy Holly's guitarist, Tommy Allsup, 85.

He was the one that lost the infamous coin toss to determine who would get a seat on the plane that ended up crashing and killing Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, in 1959.

Very nice man - met him when he was touring with Kevin Montgomery in Manchester. He also spend a lot of time playing with the Bob Wills band. Waylon Jennings was also meant to be on that plane but he swapped with the Big Bopper.

Some of us here are old enough to remember "Another Girl, Another Planet" by The Only Ones.  Drummer Mike Kellie has died aged 69.

Still my favourite song ever.  The Only Ones were a very good band.  RIP.
