Technically, Taylor wasn't manager at the time of USA 94, Dodgy Terry was.

1978 was almost 40 years ago.I said World Cup Finals

You said he was ridiculed because he was the only England manger to fail to qualify in nearly 40 years. Now unless the journos in 1994 knew that they'd qualify for all future World Cups, and decided to ignore everything before 1982, you're raving.

When he lived in Birmingham whilst managing the Vile I never heard anyone with a bad word about him. Good manager, good man. RIP.

Was the last or perhaps only great manager of Aston Villa?

T Fearon

Er Tony Barton won the European Cup for Villa in 1982

Just watched the Taylor documentary there. They really were screwed by the ref against Holland in that critical game. Koeman only getting a yellow was as scandalous a decision as you'd ever see.

Taylor was unlucky with injuries too, especially losing a prime Alan Shearer for almost the whole qualifying campaign.

Aye but it was great to see and then to rub salt in the wounds koeman scores the free kick.  Showing my age!

T Fearon

Every England manager has been ridiculed, even Alf Ramsey ffs.It possibly doesn't mean as much nowadays, hence the likes of Hodgson are quickly forgotten.

Graham Taylor was a decent bloke and a football man,but was hardly a legendary manager. He was moderately successful at Watford, with the help of Elton John's money, but was hardly a roaring success.

And to rub even more salt in the wounds, Koeman's goal was a re-take which the ref gave after an England player charged out and blocked his initial effort from about 4 or 5 yards away. Fair enough, but England's free-kick for the Koeman foul had been charged down in the exact same way and the ref had waved play on.

At the time though, it was as you say, another one of those hilariously agonising defeats for England, of which there have been so many.
And a good excuse to re-post one of the funniest videos on youtube.......

Less that 10 posts about a true Irish hero.

Graham Taylor RIP

Didn't he take Watford from Div 4 to runners up in Div 1 in the space of 5 years or so? FA cup final too. That was when Liverpool were at their best too. Not a bad effort in my book.

Sure didn't save Paul McGrath and USA 94 is such a cultural moment in Irish History.

Well if T.K. was as ahead of his time as all the plaudits have been saying, he should have had the foresight to make a heart-wrenching fly-on-the-wall documentary.

Dubh driocht

TK- a County Down man who built modern Ireland. Also a progressive and clear thinker on effective responses to crime and criminals.

T Fearon

What is commendable about modern Ireland? Governed by the greedy, with huge gap between rich and poor, crimelords kill with impunity, atheism rife, fawning to British and American governments?
