On this day in history, Russians began a three day operation that would be the largest mass deportation operation of the dark Soviet era, with the forced deportations of over 90,000 people from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to the far reaches of Siberia, where many eventually died in labor camps.

Russians even gave the operation a colorful name - Operation "Priboi" (Operation "Tidal Wave").
Moscow's intent in the Baltics in 1949 was the same as we see today in Ukraine—the destruction of national identity, the severing of family bonds and centuries of tradition, replacing it with "Russia".Only this week, the Russian dictator signed a decree mandating that residents of the occupied areas of Ukraine must accept Russian passports or face deportation.Different century. Same crimes. Same Russia.

OTD in 1949 Operation Priboi started. USSR forcibly deported *90,000* Baltic people to 'inhospitable parts' of Russia. 70% of those deported were women & children under 16.

Imagine mass deporting children today......

Attempts to return home were punishable. Those who organized the deportations received medals. We do not understand why Estonians are not grateful to us for this.

Da. Prez is aware that "inhospitable parts of Russia" is tautology.

We (and various pseudo academics*) genuinely pretend there's no way to explain why NATO is so obviously popular with so many of our former colonies. Total, unexplainable mystery. Especially seeing as we don't whitewash these crimes at all and aren't repeating them right now.

Quote from: rodney trotter on March 25, 2025, 08:16:41 AMI know he has been. Don't be so touchy. After round 5 of the league the rules were tweaked so keepers won't have as much freedom . Monaghan had most of the work done by that stagem
Most of the work was done in round 6 v Meath.

As was evident on the tv coverage and the IT
"There was also a continuing contribution from goalkeeper Rory Beggan, assisted by his team's very disciplined observance of the 4 v 3 rule, who was undaunted by the amended rules which restrict the goalkeeper's role a little. Beggan got forward on plenty of occasions to distract the defence"

Quote from: rodney trotter on March 23, 2025, 11:34:05 PMDivision 2 was competitive but no standout team. Cork lost a lot of players over the winter but looked decent today. They should have had 3 or 4 goals. Consistency aways the issue with Cork. Ian Maguire is a top midfielder.

Div 1 also competitive not sure how many teams truly stood out.  It's looking like a very open championship again which is great to see after one team dominated the winners list.

Monaghan one would expect to win the upcoming final as they have I think three weeks prep time before their championship opener while the rossies are flying out to London five days after this final.  Winning a trophy in Croke Park is a nice bonus but with promotion secured I doubt either will be that bothered by losing next Sunday.

Division 1 was competitive and up in the air who would reach the final and be promoted. Still a good gap from Division 2 and Monaghan and Roscommon could make a quick return to Division 2 in 27. Began has less of an impact now which will hinder Monaghan going forward.
You're talking thro yer hole, Beggan has been the supreme figure in Monaghan's season so far, re goalkeeping, kick outs, assists and points scored. The only worry is how would we fare without him.

Quote from: Truthsayer on January 29, 2025, 07:43:37 PMA Complete Unknown... portrayal of Bob Dylan's rise to fame. Excellent. Great music and Timothée Chalamet brilliant in the lead role. Edward Norton as Pete Seeger is quite something too... seems to be very accurate. Woodie Gutherie sad role in it but he sure inspired Dylan, Springsteen.. Anyway highly recommend. In cinemas...

Can't disagree with all of that. Well worth a watch.

It leaned heavily into the performance of his hits. I'd maybe have liked a little more time on the man, his personal life etc. Small gripe. Still a great show
+1 , really enjoyed it as well
I'll watch the Dylan film this weekend. If it can come close to being a country mile from the brilliant  Scorsese  210 min documentary 'No Direction Home' then it will have been worth it. There's good bits in that about his personal life up to 1965.  The Scorsese doc is the gold standard but takes a deal of content from the differently brilliant Pennebaker doc 'Don't Look Back'.

Some very good football but it's hard to judge where Monaghan are at based on today's win as Meath were poor, probably depressingly poor as seen from a Meath perspective. Monaghan are likely promoted, seeing as they have had 3 home games for 2 years in a row they should have 4 home games next year which might offer some survival comfort.

Quote from: marty34 on March 09, 2025, 09:01:17 AMStill think Celtic need a new centre back. Trusty and Scales are just too dodgy. Get away with it in Scotland for the most part but prone to lapses in concentration. Hopefully Celtic invest in a top quality centre back over the summer.

It would be a killer if Celtic slipped up in the qualifying round of the champions league later this year. Need really to push on in Europe. Got lucky, in fairness, with the draw of games in the CL this year. But had a real good go and learned a lot I think but can't stand still now.

Hibs should be a good test today. Have been going well as of late. Hopefully Maeda up top with Jota and Kuhn on the wings.

No CL qualifying rounds for Celtic, they're seeded in next season's CL play-off round having missed out by the slimmest of whiskers qualifying directly to the league phase.

Incidentally, Rangers freakish progress in the EL has ensured Celtic will be seeded in the CL play offs for the 2026/27 season, just ahead of the Danish League champs and strengthen the chances of qualifying directly the season after.  The coefficient points earned for the Scottish League greatly benefit Celtic, way way more than the Eur1.8m Rangers would gain should they reach the 1/4 final.

I'm more vaxed at the claim of using money for better things like housing when the local government has been stalled more or less from the start, the waste of money that has happened because of it is lost on Michelle

That's Sinn Fein (along with the DUP) that appropriate funds from charities for their pet projects. Better use of money indeed Michelle.
When it comes to all matters to do with Ukraine, Sinn Fein speak with a forked tongue, absolute hypocrisy and ignorant to boot.

Here's the remaining fixtures, I wonder what are the chances of a 3 way tie for one of the promotion spots? though little chance of revisiting the Mickey Harte dilemma of a manager not knowing the tie-breaker rules for 3 or more tied teams.

The advanced mark should've been dropped altogether and now this advanced mark advantage is adding complication to the nonsense.

Quote from: Main Street on February 24, 2025, 02:43:47 PMWhen there's a working hooter in the stadium, the ref signals (to whomever) when the clock should be stopped and restarted during breaks in play,  does that affect the black card 10 minutes long time out?  The ref signaled for the clock to stopped in the Tyrone Kerry game (Kerry player down) while Clifford was serving his time. Was Clifford's black card clock also stopped?

It's 10 minutes of time not 10 minutes on the stadium clock going by what happened in Mullingar yesterday. Black card for Cavan player in last 10 minutes and he was back on for the last 2 or 3 minutes.  It doesn't really make sence that one either.

But the black card ran like that in old rules, player injured time stopped but black card time didn't

Did time officially stop under the old rules?  I thought it was more that was short hand for "I am adding all this time on at the end"

Grimley was off the pitch for near 13 actual minutes on Saturday night
Now that the ref can stop the clock it's an opportunity to align the black card clock to the game clock.

I thought it had.  It certainly seemed to in the Armagh v Mayo match on Saturday night

Afaia, it was 10 mins of clock time in Tyrone and Mullingar.
