Aye Ziggy. Got sick of updating the old html based site so i replaced it with that one about a year ago using Joomla. It's far far handier. You don't need to have dreamweaver/frontpage to update it or have any web design experience at all.
For any of you thinking about setting up a club website, i'd recommend using Joomla. The way i have it now, the Chairman, Secretary, PRO and a few others can all update the site by just logging in and typing into a user friendly interface. It can even be updated from your blackberry/mobile.

It's really easy to set up, just check www.joomla.org.

Thanks for the replies lads, I somehow knew I'd find out the hosting cost for greencastlegfc  :)

Even from the two responses that we have there it can be seen that there is a significant disparity in the hosting costs the different clubs are paying. I know that the gaa.ie sites are hosted free but the vast majority of them are very poor (with a few notable exceptions) and we don't want to go down that route.

I don't think I'll get much of a response to the question in the local section, think it might be no harm posting the question on the main gaa section.

Thats what he put it forward, we are getting a professional job done on the design, based on the simmonstown site on the link below

For what we are getting in terms of a site, it is pretty good, but the hosting seems pricey

I don't think that simonstown site has a content management system though?
Seriously, for any of you setting up websites for your clubs you'd need to have a content management system. The simonstown site there, is like our old site, where the pages have to be edited offline in dreamwweaver/frontpage and uploaded. In this case it's usually left up to one person that knows what they're doing and will eventually piss you off.
I have 7 people in the club now that can upload notes etc, which means i have very little work to do on the site.
The sites below use content management systems similar to joomla;

WeeDonns, I am trying to redesign the Greencastle website from scratch, using aspx. However it's driving me nuts, as my knowledge on the technology is medium-to-average.

I had a design in my head that I want to use, so I was wondering if Joomla flexible enough for me to use my own design or do you work from templates?

We will have content management on ours, I think its essential, there are probably going to be 5 us with access

you just create one template  - tricky enough, and apply it in the adminstration panel. or you can buy templates i know someone who customises gaa templates.

Aye ziggy, i just downloaded a free template and changed the images in photoshop and some colours in the CSS sheet and just applied the template to the site. Theres loads of ones you can download for free.
I used a book called 'Building Websites with Joomla' by Packt publlishing which i downloaded for free from mininova. This has a step by step guide to building your website and publishing it. It also has a chapter showing you how to create your own template for use with joomla.

Has anyone out there with a joomla/mambo website got a good component for displaying league tables???? i know there's a Joomleague component but i couldnt be assed customising it to display GAA scores. The only place i've seen one that's not just plain html is here;

Trying to get our club up and running with a good website... looked into gaelsport and it seems like a good option...

so if i used them do i then have to pay extra for hosting or do they sort that...

i'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff... looked through the powerpoint and video on how to manage it and i think i could manage it..

going to ring them but i haven't a clue what to ask..

any advice? want to have all info gathered to bring to committee next week. cheers!

No they would host it on their servers and I'd imagine that it would be included in their cost.
The CMS is probably straight forward to use as well.
Will be similiar to the GAA Registration system as it was developed by the same company.

do have an idea of what they cost...?

i'd be looking for the basic package to begin with and work from there.....

They are the same company as Gaelsport.
Servasport have developed the GAA Registration System which is compulsary from March this year.
As part of that clubs will have a database of members, with communication tools including the texts etc.
