Oh fountains of wisdom.
I may have to head to Portree in the Isle of Skye to do some business in the next week or two.
How the hell can I get in and out of there as soon as possible from Dublin?
Nearest airport seems to be Inverness and then a 100 or so mile journey
Ferry to Cairnryan or Stranraer and then an epic 6 hour car
Any ideas?
I did a road trip with the parents in the summer around scotland, amazing scenery, very Emerald isle like. I would go by ferry and drive to glasgow, stay the night there and then drive to portree and isle of skye...take in the views...don't know why you try to rush it, the roads aren't great...so you need your wits about you, 6 hrs would be too long imo...after a ferry,if u fly u have to rent a car, and its fair old trek from inverness to portree..
Sligonian
I don't really want to hang around as time is money so I need the quickest 'in-out' solution. I would imagine that I would need to be in the place of business at least half a day.
I've been to the IoS and that part of the wurrild before 20 years ago on holidays. I agree it can be beautiful. When we were there it pissed rain and we ended up staying in a hotel/guesthouse where we were the only guests.......very Bates' motelish.
Your not in the business of gents tailoring? I remember everyone asking Donald about the location of his trousers, years ago. Wasn't he from the Isle of Skye?
Jazes Tony.
I thought ye all know that I am, for my sins in a past life, an accountant.
Need to go over there and set up to do the payroll of a company with 100 or so staff remotely from Dublin but I need to be physically there at least once to introduce myself and do the transfer of data over to my system.
This is my neck of the woods :). There is alas no longer an Inverness - Dublin plane link but you can fly Belfast - Inverness. It will take you about two and half hours to drive from Inverness to Portree.
The other option would be driving from Cairnryan. I wouldn't recommend this as the A82 (road from Glasgow to the Highlands) is pretty poor. You would be looking at a 6/7 hour road trip I think.
OK
Seems that an Aer Lingus flight to Manchester and then a Flybe to Inverness seems to be the best way.
Leaving Dublin at 6.30 am and arriving in Inverness at 10.20 with a 1.5 hour waitover in Manchester.
May be a bit tight coming back with the connections but it will be an adventure.
LDA - if you know Portree where would you recommend for a night's accommodation - nothing too fancy - just clean and warm.
Q. How do I get to the Isle of Skye from Dublin?
A. Practice Shamrock Shore, practice.
I always stay with family when I'm over but I asked a friend from Portree and he recommended the Tongadale. Dated he said, but clean and nice and friendly. It's right in the middle of Portree. The public bar is an nice spot too. There are a few classier hotels but you would pay a good bit more for them.
Speed, bonny boat, like a bird on the wing
O'er the sea to Skye
Carry Shamrock Shore, like a bird on the wing
O'er the sea to Skye.
Primary 6...ah the memories of James and Charlie Kielt's grandmother singing that song with us at St.Columba's.

You must be getting some size of fee for this ;)
There's a train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh
2 hours 28 minutes and lovely views

The mind f*cking boggles!! I thought the Scots were famous for looking after their money - why, of why would they need an Edgytown man to help??
