Taking the missus away for her 40th in February.  Wanted to do something different as opposed to Paris/Barcelona/Rome.  Read about the Nice carnival and it seems like it fits the bill.  Anyone ever been there?  Any other suggestions.....

it has to be closer to the end of February for baby sitting reasons, otherwise valentines would have been the one

Anyway, long story short... is a phrase whose origins are complicated and rambling.

Santa Cruz Tenerife has the biggest & best Carnival outside of Rio in the world it's on from 12 to 21 Feb, also Valletta Malta have a big one & worth seeing it's on 12 Feb to 16 Feb

can't comment about Nice haven't been there for the carnival time, but with Eze, Monaco & Cannes close by there is plenty to do
The key to success is to be consistently competitive -- if you bang on the door often it will open

Don't think Santa Cruz would be a patch on Barranquilla for the Carnival...no idea about Nice though

haven't been to Barranquilla either but Santa Cruz is a lot closer than Colombia & safer i'm sure

of course if distance is not a problem new orleans mardi gras is on Feb 16th

as a slightly different alternative the biggest Carnival celebrations are in Cologne/Dusseldorf. Easy to get to on Aer Lingus from Dublin and plenty of beers available.
