Derry / Re: Derry Club Football & Hurling original
March 18, 2024, 09:13:42 PM
Its a funny old game. Two years ago Derry were  on the brink of Promotion to Div 1 when they played Roscommon away. They drew the game but could have won it in the last minute but for a "sequence of events" to work against them. The dropped point cost them promotion. In the final game Galway, already promoted rested some players resulting in A Roscommon victory and promotion. Next Sunday Derry play Roscommon and their approach to the game will have a big say in whether Roscommon or Galway are relegated. Different management but mostly the same Derry team???

I very much doubt this is a holiday. Most of the successful top teams have taken warm weather training breaks before the championship begins. I appreciate the efforts made by these players and others to get Derry to where they are now. Its always easy to snipe from the sidelines but the offfield and onfield management of the county have been getting it right these past few years

Quote from: Wildweasel74 on October 28, 2023, 08:13:40 PMHow we have Dublin at home, when we were home to them last year.
I reckon we have Monaghan, Roscommon, Kerry and Tyrone at home with Mayo, Dublin and Galway away. Don't know in what order the games occur

This road was a nightmare yesterday evening after the football in Omagh. Traffic crawled, bumper to bumper, at about 15-20 mph for most of the way to Ballygawley roundabout. To finish it off there was an almighty down pour which made it extremely dangerous. Throw in some heavy lorries, tractors towing trailers, tourists unfamiliar with the road and you have a recipe for disaster

GAA Discussion / Re: Overcarrying

Referees seem to let overcarrying go unless it is very obvious. I would be in favour of the foam marker for frees. Players start their run up  from the spot and in many cases the free is reduced to a tap over free.

None of this would of happened if subs weren't  allowed on just to waste time. The ref could have stopped subs coming on. Cynicism rewarded.Glen should appeal to make the point but decline offer of replay

I am a neutral in this discussion but it seems to me that Glen were treated badly during the last few minutes. The cynical use of substitutes in extra time used up most of the 3 min which the ref chose to ignore. I think the sideline officials are more to blame for the 16/17 players but the ref should have allowed more time

Tighten up application of the rules. The clock should be stopped on the 10 min penalty for a black card if there is an "injury". It looks very sloppy the way it is at present. Also frees should be kicked at or behind the position of the foul, not 10 to 20 yards nearer the goal. At present frees close to goal usually end up being kicked from in front of the posts!

GAA Discussion / Re: NFL Division Two 2022

I must say as  a Derry fan the past couple of weeks have left a sour taste. While I agree with the comments from supporters that another year in D2 may not be a bad thing it ignores the fact that they were the victims of one of the most cynical actions carried out by any team in the league. There was a very good chance that McGuigan would have scored the free and the final league positions would have been reversed. To make matters worse the officials felt he should be sent off!! We feared Galway would field a shadow team yesterday and so it turned out with the game resembling a challenge match.

As a long suffering Derry supporter its great to see the progress that has been achieved recently. We now seem to have the correct people involved off the field as well as on and we have a group of players who want to play for the county. Of course it doesn't mean we will win anything but we are getting the best out of the players available.
We now have a style of play the players have bought into and is working so far.

Isn't it wonderful that Garth doesnt  hold any grudges about the 2014 cancellations.

Derry point waved wide there. You hope a game isn't decided on something like that. Poor enough game.
Meath given a point in the second half which was wide. I had the perfect view of it as had the linesman on the terrace side

Brilliant day for gaelic football. Great to see the raw emotion which has been missing these last few years. If this was any other year Donegal, Tyrone, Cork ,Kerry etc would have another chance and the stronger teams would survive. Hopefully this will put an end to the back door and the B championship

General discussion / Re: Teachers get it handy!

I have taught GCSE and A level for many years. In my experience there were pupils who you could confidently predict their grade
- at both ends of the spectrum, but there were quite a few for whom it was difficult to predict. When the exams were cancelled in March I couldnt believe the promises that were made that grades could be awarded accurately and no pupil would be disadvantaged. It is a near impossible goal to achieve.
