Meath minors' promising start in Ulster league
ULSTER MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE Cavan........................0-12 Meath.......................3-08

IT will take much sterner tests to evaluate this year's Meath minors than the one encountered in this openinground Ulster MFL tie at floodlight Kingspan Breffni Park last Friday night.

Pat Coyle's charges mixed the good with the bad, which was understandable considering that it was their first outing together. However, in terms of their capacity to emulate last year's Leinster title success, the jury will have to sit for a little longer.

A return of 3-8 was commendable, however, with a purple patch coming in the third quarter as Meath turned a 0-5 to 0-4 deficit into a 2-8 to 0-7 lead by the 43rd minute. They only managed a Harrison Silke goal from there to the finish, however, as the home side cut the deficit to three points late in the game.

Afterwards, manager Coyle expressed his satisfaction with the display, and especially the manner in which his side responded to Cavan's late surge.

'Some of the lads had never played together before and this was the first real competitive outing. There were some mistakes, but they knuckled down and dug deep, even in the last 10 minutes,' he said.

' We have a good strong panel of 24 and six more lads who couldn't tog out tonight because of the rules restricting panels to 24.'

Ciaran Lenehan, Damien Carroll, Silke, Bryan Menton, Kevin Mallon, Mark McCormack, Sean Tobin and David Larkin are survivors from last year's squad and Lenehan, Carroll, Silke, Mallon and McCormack in particular impressed in this outing. Substitute Conor Deveraux also made a big impression.

The sides were level on three occasions in the first half before wingback Michael Brady gave the Breffni boys a minimum lead at the break.

Meath made a great start to the second half, with corner forward Shane Gillespie pointing in the opening attack. Then Silke fisted a point after a move started in the fullback line by Lenehan.

By the 33rd minute the visitors were 1-6 to 0-5 ahead, with Gillespie having a simple tap-in after Carroll's goal effort was blocked.

Cavan replied with a couple of converted frees from midfielder Barry Reilly, but then Meath scored a second goal, Emmet Boyle finding the net following a a great delivery from Silke. Boyle then added a point from a free to leave his side ahead by double scores.

Meath lost their way after that and Cavan were unlucky not to find the net at least once. It was 2-8 to 0-11 in the 55th minute before the impressive Silke ended any hopes of a late Cavan charge by netting a minute from time.
