General discussion / "the kids are alright!!??"
March 23, 2017, 02:32:09 PM
I've four preteen kids. I wondering is it my fault that the second fella came home from school and announced the teachers strike is off because "some man McGuiness is dead" I was a little surprised that he hadn't heard of martin McGuiness he's 11.
I asked them what history they are taught.. they can name the succession of English kings and queens and know about the stone age and iron age but don't know about the GPO or 1916, They're not taught about partition or the hungerstrikers or the peace process..
where do you start? I don't want to embitter them but in my version of history that's inevitable.
So is it "once upon a time there were four green fields?" or there was this fella bobby sands?
Shouldn't the schools be teaching this? or maybe there should be history lessons somewhere that they can go.?
My mother remembers going to vote and unionists/Orangemen spitting on them and trying to trip them up as they entered the polling station is this the type of thing the modern kid needs to know?

I know someone is going say its all at the touch of a button- so is how to cook Chinese food but we all go to the takeaway.

Have you tackled this or what's your best solution

Maybe theyre better off not knowing..

General discussion / auschwitz day jews. v nazis
January 27, 2015, 12:20:51 PM
Plenty of footage (filmed ironically by nazis) on the beeb. It seems no matter how they tried the nazis just couldnt handle the ammount of  jews that were arriving by truck and train. It was going nicely for them till they started exporting the service to france hungary austria and numerous other countries who availed of their services. They despite their german efficiency  were over subscribed. This is how they ended up with 'survivors'! They needed the manpower to load bodies, recycle old clothes, did graves, sex workers etc etc.
Im finded it diffiicult to feel sorry for these poor people as they wail and cry on tv and hold up their tattoos.. I just keep thinking GAZA!!

General discussion / THE 1%.
January 22, 2015, 05:50:40 PM
Just read a strange article. According to oxfam by the end of 2016. 1% or the worlds population will have accumulated more wealth than the remaining 99%.!! Dont know how theyve worked this out. But after the fall of "communism" persay the problem seems to have flurished.. Thats if your in the 99% if your in the 1% well things are rosy.

GAA Discussion / armagh's next manager
August 09, 2014, 07:10:40 PM
Paul grimley says hes finished. After today and some of geezers games with kildare.. Dare I say it the emperor is naked. Failure to deal with mcmanus in the ulster semi cost us a possible ulster title and even in that game a disasterous goalkeeper. And then the donegal game.. Same same. Just how much geezers input into the actual gameplan is with grimley is hard to say. I wonder if hes the right man for this armagh team with potential. Firstly I love geezer I have a first born son named after him his picture hangs in my office.. But im an armagh man and I have my doubts

Just a bit of craic. Dont review any place you haven't been to or haven't bought a meal in. Be honest!! It can be anywhere a chip van to a fancy sheik resturant.. Say what you had, memtion the service.. Was it slow? were they friendly and helpful? Had you kids with you and how'd they cope with theyre needs? Was it good value?? Are you going back?

State clearly if you are or have an interest or relationship with the place you reviewed. No blowin up your sisters bistro.. You'll get caught out.. Boys on here know everything

You can give stars. five stars being highly recomended, one star avoid like ebola..

Ps any place that serves chips in a little bucket to a grown man is 4 star at best.. I hate that shite

Theres no getting away from the ulster banner I just noticed its being used in scotland to represent norn iron in the commonwealth games. Am I offended? Nah! Dumbass games if you ask me but this flag is not legal nor is it the flag of this artificial state its a sectarian flag of hatred and thats what its used for.. Promoting hatred

independence day.. gets me every time. will smith and your man say 'kick the tyres and light the fires' and I'm out for the count. As soon as I put this turkey on I need to set the sleep button on the telly or I've to turn it off in the middle of the night. I've not tried watching it during the day but I doubt I'd see the end of it..

pulp fiction is a close second.. yawn..

Dont worry about ww 111.  Very bad news on the desease war. That horrible desease that features  in the film "outbreak" is very real. Normally the ebolla virus survives dormantly in the deserts of guinea in central africa occasionaly sporring to kill a few local goat guys who may wander too close. In this latest installment it has killed 60 people and found its way into the capital city. Many scientists believe that the black death that ravaged europe was in fact the ebolla virus... Oh sheeit

I just saw this on the news. Caribbean ex-plantation slaves who can trace their records back to the country who enslaved them- mainly Britain are to sue for damages. many of them still live in terrible conditions on various Caribbean islands where they're ancestors lived as slaves working on plantations.. but ohh lord.. guess who else made mega bucks at that particular time kidnapping black fellas as they went about their business in Africa.. well it turns out that a lot of those bigshots who lived and still live behind huge estate walls with wee forelock pulling families living in gatehouses and thousands of serfs paying them rent may have a bill coming in the post.
while many of these gentry were and are Brits. just as many Irish were eager to cash in on the slave trade. of course none of them wanted to labeled slave traders so when they were asked how 'did' they earn a living the answer was "spice trader"
just look at many of the names common in black Caribbeans are Irish names like Murphy, O'Malley O'Hara etc all big names in the 'spice trade'. (check out 'gone with the wind' scarlett 'o hara' Rhett 'butler') While its highly unlikely that descendants of these nabobs are liable for the distress these people still find themselves in. the opening of these files/detailed records concerning the sale of slaves could prove embarrassing for many of the ruling classes still to the fore in Irish society

General discussion / will I am..
March 10, 2014, 05:28:08 PM
Hes everywhere you look.. Hes a judge on the voice ::) am I the only one whos noticed he cant sing.. I just went through black eyed peas vidjoes and he raps/ talks but I havent once heard him sing anything!
Surely if your gonna be a judge in a singing competition you should be able to sing at least something.
Also in the blind chair session of this show I think it would be interesting if the real artists showed up and auditioned singing their own songs and see IF they get picked

Especially the ones who are dead :D

There must be a book or something comming out but campbell reckons he wasnt the captain of england soccer because he was black. I dont follow english soccer but this doesnt sound right. Surely a player's worth is not dictated by his colour? Is this an english thing? Paul mcgrath still can 't buy a dinner or drink here even though he hasnt played for sometime such is the level of admiration/respect for him.
Maybe campbell just isnt captain materail?

General discussion / tips for "eco" living
February 23, 2014, 10:12:09 PM
Every penny counts. Any tips you have for saving energy/money?

Its taking near a £100 a week to run our house (3000sqft) with the cold weather at the moment. Aaahoooch! About 50 for oil, 20 for coal, 25 for electric and gas cooker plus i'm sawing up any shite I can for the pot belly.. Granted in the summer this will go down but it hasnt really been sub zero so far.. Its not over yet.

Thinking about getting cavity walls pumped it might help but its about £800 (and thats cheap) it wont save all that much theres already white board in the walls. Might get the place done with a heat camera to see where the heats going..

Meanwhile if you put a bucket in the shower before you get in to catch the cold water before it warms you can use it to water your plants they like cold water ::)  theres a tip..  ;D from the ikea.uk website im sure the fellas in somerset never thought of that... ::) :D
