Peter Eichstaedt's short book, Consuming the Congo: War and Conflict Minerals in the World's Deadliest Place*, takes up the story where Jason Stearns leaves off. Eichstaedt, a formidable journalist and Africa expert, traces the whole grimy trail of exploitation. It begins with ragged villagers digging the gold, tin, or coltan (used in computers and cell phones), continues up through the militias who tax the diggers ruthlessly, on to the négociants who in turn sell to the comptoirs in the eastern Congo cities of Goma or Bukavu, who deliver the ore to international smelting corporations, mostly in Asia. So far efforts to smash this chain—which still finances the militias in their campaigns of mass rape and massacre—have been unsuccessful.

Don't know how some people can do things like this, certainly not something I could stomach

Don't jump straight to condemnation. Have a heart.

Unconfirmed whether the video is realia or not.

I think it is hard to understand the sheer awfulness of mass murder but this gives an idea

"We found the strip of land the bodies were burned on," said Haimi. "The earth there is painted a reddish-brown color. My guess is that this is from the blood and fat of the victims, which seeped down to a depth of three meters. The area smells of carrion. It's amazing and horrifying at the same time."

There was a movie on that place: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092978/

It is on Netflix. Decent watch but a harrowing story.

That Adrian Bayley fella, who was convicted of raping and murdering Jill Meagher, is just 41 years old and has been convicted of 22 rapes against 6 different women and he was out on parole. Was the Australian Justice system trying to help him get into the Guinness Book of Records?

Rossnowlagh at the weekend.

WTF are Donegal County Council up to? I've never seen anything like this, anywhere! Complete and utter disgrace. Apparently several young kids went "missing" too. Emergency services were called. They were eventually found on the beach.

Justice system my arse!

I can see the logic in that though Count. If a person abuses a kid then they scar them for life and deserve any punishment they get. Of course it's right that child porn is illegal but I think probation and being named and shamed is punishment enough for these guys if they don't take their fantasies into the real world. I know there's the arguement that these guys create the demand that leads to kids being abused, so they should be punished in some way but I don't see the need for him to be locked up. Just my opinion. And I know that sticking up for paedos won't make me too popular ha ha. You never see any politician with that as part of his campaign manifesto - Vote Smyth #1 - better rights for paedos.
