1. Why should I buy one?

2. Will any money from Saffron Sweep go directly into the pocket of one Mr J Gormley?

3. Will any money from Saffron Sweep be wasted on hurling?

Two nos to 2 & 3 and a reasoned argument for 1 and I would consider it.

1. Why should I buy one?
Its a great draw with great prizes to be won.
You will be supporting your club.
You will be supporting your county.
The funds generated by the draw will help the county to deliver on the Strategic Plan which has many benefits for all Gaels in the county.

2. Will any money from Saffron Sweep go directly into the pocket of one Mr J Gormley?
The County Chairman outlines the aims and purpose of the draw on the ticket, and also at the bottom of this page on the website: http://antrim.gaa.ie/saffron-sweep-2008/
The main aim of the draw is to enable the county to deliver on the Strategic Plan - mainly the Centre of Excellence.
Links to each below which are also on the Administration section of the county website:
Antrim Strategic Plan (http://antrim.gaa.ie/uploads/documents/AntrimStrategy.pdf)
Planning Document on Centre of Excellence (http://antrim.gaa.ie/uploads/documents/excellence-web.pdf)

3. Will any money from Saffron Sweep be wasted on hurling?
Do you seriously expect an answer? Funds generated from the Saffron Sweep will be used in the ways outlined above.

(I am not a member of the county board or executive so any opinions expressed are my own and I have pointed out the facts about the Saffron Sweep above)

If it's an Antrim thing, to benefit only the one county, why are you spamming so many posts with little or no relevance to Antrim?

wasted on hurling? explain yourself Saffron,  what areas do you think we are wasting money on hurling?

The club commission is open to all clubs in all counties.
So you you bought one, you would just enter your club name and county and when the draw is complete your club would receive £10 commission.
Full details of commission above or on the website.

To paraphrase Gordon Strachan, which areas - mainly the big green ones with two goal posts at either end dotted round the county.

Or maybe the ones where 'we' enter teams into competitions year on year and we still get hit for scores like 3-29 or 1-24. Where 'we' moan and groan about why there are only going to be 9 teams in Div. 1 and that 'we' have a god given right to be in Div. 1 and 'we' show absolutely no improvement at any stage over the intervening years and 'we' remain a laughing stock throughout real traditional hurling counties.

Or those where 'we' try to spend money on hurling in the city when it is obvious that it has long since died a death. Sure didn't one club send their dual players to play a football friendly instead of a senior hurling championship match - not one penny of hurling funds should ever go to that club again.

I would happily pay £50 for half a ticket if I could be guaranteed that not a shekel would go near that north Antrim county board's hurling 'development' strategy. Oh and that none went directly to a Mr J Gormley either.

So Sam you consider that Antrim who currently compete in Div 1 hurling and Div 4 football are wasting money on hurling???. Remind me in the last thirty years how many Ulster titles have Antrim footballers won and I will go and try to work out how many Antrim hurlers have won.

sam, don't be such a snob, its boys like you who will take antrim no where with their negativity

whats your problem with north antrim? all the money they raise they put straight back into their games. every penny is spent on exactly what the committee says it is, developing gaa in north antrim. never in north antrim have kids had so many games, and thats exactly why teams trom donegal, derry, down and more attend their juvenille competitions.

those two score lines are against two of the three best teams in Ireland. i would love to see how antrim fare against kerry or mayo/ tyrone in football. and i am not a football man but am delighted to see the footballers getting better. fair play, but they play in division 4, so why should all the money going to developing football. it should be equal.

and how sure are you that the county is paying jody gormley?

I wouldnt be paraphrasing of quoting a lad who doesnt know his erse from his elbow (though it seems Ijust have!)

as for strachan and gormley
ones ginger who hasnt a clue what he's doing, the other is gordan strachan

(although I could have swapped that around and been equally as accurate)

best of luck with the fundraising Saffrons.
I think there should be a lot of lads round the west of Belfast with great money raising experience that are at a loose end these days - you could use their expertise!

Well it would have been a bad job if the County Chairmans club were not one of the leading sellers....

Bought a ticket last year - even better prizes this year. Also went to the Race Day at Down Royal - fabulous event. Antrim showing a bit of class with these professionally presented initiatives and I have no qualms about how money is being spent. At long last a county board in Antrim is on the money! Good luck to them with this.

as a humble man of humble means, I'll still get the pennies together to buy a ticket off you (although you had no intentionof actually parting with the money in the first place  ;))
or if safron sam contacts me, I'll buy one off him......mostly because I feel sorry for him, and this may make him join up to this! :D

The problem is with the county chairman and his myopic approach to the GAA in Antrim. Fair play to those involved in the schemes you outline, but until Dr McSparran realises there is more than hurling under his remit then he can't expect footballing people to embrace his grandeous schemes.

Last time Antrim played Tyrone in a championship match (2003), a goal and a point in injury game gave Tyrone an ill-deserved 8 point win. In the qualifiers that year Antrim ran the reigning All-Ireland champions (then officially the best team in Ireland) to three points. I don't see the hurlers coming close to either result in the Championship against one of the top half dozen teams in the foreseeable future.

The last time Antrim played Kerry (NFL) it resulted in a nine point win for Kerry (1-14 to 0-8). I have included the Kerry team for your perusal.

D O' Keefe, M McCarthy, B O'Shea, K Burns; S Moynihan (0-1), M Hassett, T O Se; D O'Se (0-2), W Kirby; J Mc Glynn (0-2), L Hassett (0-1), D Daly; J Murphy (0-3), J Crowley (cpt, 1-2), D O' Cinneide (0-3). Subs: M Fitzgerald for L Hassett (41mins) J Ferriter for J Crowley (52mins), N Kennelly for D O'Se (58mins).

Multiple All-Ireland winners and All-Stars galore there, not like the Cork team sent up here at the weekend.

An excellent idea - why not let the clubs selling the tickets decide exactly what scheme they want their tickets to go towards. This would be another incentive for clubs to sell more tickets and they could even donate their commission to show they cared.

Ok saff so if we are running these teams so close why are we still in the Tommy Murphy cup and div 4. We are a shite team and last night proved how shite we are.

In regards to your score lines with the Tyrone and Armaghs and Kerry's of this world, it does not reflect the possession they had in those games. Also you managed to leave out how Clare beat us at Casement and Wicklow, and other such powerful teams

Years of deeply incompetent management and administration, including a significant input from your own club. Hopefully the corner has been turned there and once Jody Gormley is replaced by Kevin Madden the upward curve will be much steeper. Last night only proved my ongoing points re the management rather than the quality of player.

I was simply answering the question put to me by another poster. But like slow corner back, you are right. History doesn't record winning scorelines, it records (and decides matches) on the amount of possession. Thanks for that insight.

I have discussed the Clare loss many times and it can be summed up in two words. Mickey Culbert.

fair enough answer to the rest of the points, but what has dr john got to with North Antrims CDC? absolutely nothing, and thats fact. that all comes from NA and is highly successful so he cant even claim that. north antrim raise all their funds by a committee that spends their time getting external sponsors and not asking off the county board for continual handouts. this is the only divisional board making progress and you are putting them down. gets my goat

Only started reading this thread this morning. It's beyond me how anybody in this county could be so negative towards the hurling fraternity. As much as I would love to be putting it up to the top intercounty teams it still does not detract from what is a fantastic local game played at a fairly decent level. Any hurling match played with full passion and commitment is a joy to watch/play in. Thank god there are plenty of clubs/support left in Antrim who know about such things

Its good to see Antrim at least making a professional attempt at fund raising so I applaude everyone involved.

As for SS2 I wish you would stop pedalling this persecution complex that the football people in Antrim have, there is no excuse for antrim being so poor in football the best football in the country has been played in the neighbouring counties for the past 10 - 15 years and we have still not moved on, there is no geographical problems for football here. If the football clubs would get thier act together and get the standard up we could be a power house but they want to sit back and bitch and snipe at everyone else for not helping them.

As for north antrim i have to say that they are ahead of the curve on most things and they are driving our games forward which should be the case all over the county but sadly isnt.

The new training grounds etc seem to be a very professional setup and this is the kind of thing which helps it which is always a plus point.

One thing in terms of development which I would raise questions on... Why do St Enda's see the need to play in North Antrim hurling / South West Antrim football? What is going on with the south belfast teams that they need to do this?

North Antrim and South West are generally well organised with underage leagues - is south antrim not the same?
