GAA Discussion / John Morrison RIP
February 12, 2019, 01:14:38 PM
John Morrison once told a group of players at a training session to go over to a skip at the side of the pitch and throw their negative thoughts into it. Way ahead of his time. Lovely man and a great GAA man. RIP. I'm sure everyone has their own story about John..

GAA Discussion / rte balance?
October 09, 2008, 12:26:57 PM
http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/championship// - don't mean to start a big north-south paranoia debate, but I would've thought that the top story on this page should have been Tyrone as All Ireland champs against Armagh, not Dublin-Meath.

GAA Discussion / One for the ladies
September 29, 2008, 12:58:27 PM
Cork belles or re-belles 4 in-a-row is something else, they deserved to win tho Monaghan put up a great show and were closer tha the score suggests. the ref handed cork 2 penos, the second nothing short of ridiculous, and he made stupid calls all through, ruining a great scrap. wee mcanespie on the wing was fab, as was mcconnell number 10, they'll get a few all stars. btw why do ladies players not complain about decisions like the penos? not saying they should, but it's interesting that they don't.

GAA Discussion / Sam on BBC is 'most popular'

Never mind Eamon Holmes, the All Ireland Final is top of the list down the side about most popular TV. If you click the championship logo you can watch the whole show from last Sunday. Didn't know they could do that but fair play cos it's up there with the top shows.

GAA Discussion / Has Kieran Shannon lost it?
August 18, 2008, 03:04:11 PM
Did anyone read the article about Armagh in the Tribune? He tried to make out Armagh were the 'most important and influential' team of the decade, like Cork hurlers. You can't make a case for either (Kerry, Tyrone in football, Kilkenny in hurling) but he tried anyway and came up with some awful rubbish, which is unlike him, to be fair. Like... Armagh only lost the 05 semi to tyrone because of a 'dubious free... for a slight tug on Stevie O'neill's jersey'. Sorry Kieran, but the fact is that Stevie got past Ciaran McKeever and he pulled him back. Free. No question, not dubious at all. Also, like most Dublin journos, they ignored stuff like the Michael Collins 2 reds in the Ulster Final of that year which handed it to Armagh, McGeeney being hauled off by Big Joe in the 05 semi at a crucial time, the Fermanagh defeat, the collapse against Kerry, and now Wexford.

Still on the Tribune, they said in the match ratings that Davy Harte's 1-1 made him the top-scoring half-back in the championship. Aidan Carr has 0-24.

And, Liam Hayes said Sean Cavanagh should have been sent off for his shoulder into Whelan and a yellow just after it. He didn't mention at all the Whelan punch. Sounds to me like the Tribune boys were on the black stuff on Saturday night.

GAA Discussion / Club membership fees
April 03, 2008, 05:32:20 PM
Money again, but not the usual one. There appears to be a discrepancy between different clubs over fees they charge for membership each year, maybe it's something which could be looked at by an overall GAA body? I've just been sent the fees for Bredagh in Div 3 in Belfast - Youth/Student £35 Adult Player £55 Social/Coach £25 Family membership £100. Seems a lot to me for a club without even a home. What do they do with the money? How does this compare?

GAA Discussion / BBC - 2 weeks on
November 19, 2007, 07:11:35 PM
Has anything changed... Let's see... Ulster Club semis on Sunday at Clones and Omagh. 7000 at Clones, something similar at Omagh. Radio Ulster coverage – no preview, no commentary, no programme. But over the weekend, they had commentary from France on Friday on the ulster rugby, a full afternoon of sport on Saturday and commentary on Saturday night from Windsor park. So that's rugby on Friday, soccer on Saturday and damn all on Sunday. Sounds familiar Paddy Heaney? Did they not think after the outcry that it might be an idea to have better coverage of the semis or would that be admitting they were wrong, which of course they would never do cos they never think they are.

What about tv... there has never been as clear a case of tokenism as there was on Friday. Right at the end of the sports news, there was about 10 seconds of Paddy Bradely. It was so obvious this was them trying to give it a mention but it was so short and tagged on that it only highlighted their effort at trying to give it a mention, if you know what I mean. In short, they don't really want to do it and they don't know how to do it.

Tonight, Monday, they had loads on NI (fair play), a live interview with has-been Wayne McCullough about him maybe being stupid enough to get in the ring again. That's obviously more important to them than the gaelic report cos it was given twice as much time. maybe its because Watson is his mate.

I've made a few enquiries in the last week or so and it appears that the bbc head of sport was a surprise appointment last year. He was a news reporter and still beat off candidates from the sports office, including some from a gaelic background. Who appointed him? Well, his boss is Mike Edgar, then Peter Johnson (never heard of him) is the overall boss. Imagine if the top layers of the bbc were all from a catholic background and they dropped the Irish League coverage...

GAA Discussion / Never on a Sunday
November 19, 2007, 04:29:29 PM
I hear the reason the NI game was played on Saturday night in ridiculous conditions was that a postponement would have meant them having to play the game on Sunday and the IFA is the only football authority in the world that bans football on the sabbath day. It would also have meant the bbc having a sports programme on a sunday, possibly incorporating the ulster club semis, and that's banned too.
