GAA Discussion / NFL - Scouting GAA Players
December 12, 2023, 09:10:52 AM
Monaghan and Wicklow keepers Rory Beggan & Mark Jackson are heading to USA to kick Infront of scouts for all 32 NFL teams. They will also head to a week long kicking camp in Florida before hand.

The progress of Beggan and Jackson is timely as a new rule is is due to take effect where all 32 teams must have an 'international player' on the practice squad, essentially a reserve side, raising their hopes of getting picked up. The NFL are scouting kickers/punters as part of their international player pathway programme that they hope establish deeper worldwide roots.

If one of these keepers makes it, combined with the above new rule, you can be sure that all teams & collages will be start scouting GAA kickers. Could be an Aussie rules situation in a few years where there are 10 or more players signed up.

Fair play to the 2 men, some experience for them. Although some blow for the 2 counties, reported that they will miss a large part of the 2024 season, even if they aren't signed up.

General discussion / Favourite Pub in Ireland
April 28, 2023, 09:19:21 AM
What would be your favourite pub in ireland? Can be North or South.

Might be a bar you've been to once, visit once a year, or go to every weekend.

A few of us talking about doing a tour of Ireland this summer and trying to visit good bars along the way. 2 fellas have already stated 2 bars that we have to visit.

  • Sean's Bar, Athlone. (Ireland and Europe's oldest, still functioning, bar)
  • Johnny Foxes, Glencullin. (Anyone who's been will know why)

GAA Discussion / Ticket Prices
January 12, 2023, 10:41:53 PM
From Cahair O'Kane

Ticket prices for National Leagues increase from €15 last year to €18 in 2023. Revenues from last year's leagues were higher than in 2019. In 2019, leagues brought in €3.5m, cost €1.3m to run.

€18 is a disgrace for a NFL game IMO.

General discussion / Day Trips
July 02, 2022, 02:44:25 PM
Anyone recommend any good day trips, or things to do beyond the obvious tourist attractions eg Giants Causeway, Cliffs of Moher, Guinness tour etc.

A few Sunday's ago when the weather was good we got the train to Bangor (obviously there's not much there) and dandered along the Coast, about an hour took us to Helens Bay, chilled there for a bit, had a few light refreshments with us. Then walked on from there to Holywood where we had food booked at the Mexican, 'La Taqueria' stayed on for a few drinks and got the train back to Belfast.

A random wee day but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The weather was brilliant which made it, the coastal walk was lovely, the food at La Taqueria was brilliant and it was just something different. The missus' friend had done the walk a few weeks before us and recommended it, I wasn't mad about the idea TBH but would definitely recommend it.

General discussion / Price of a Pint
October 13, 2021, 09:46:37 AM
The price of a pint is away mad in Belfast.

I was in both Belfast & Dublin over the weekend.

Belfast Friday night I ordered 2 pints of Guinness - £11.20
2 Guinness in Dublin  on Saturday was €10.80 (£9.15)

£5.60 for a pint in Belfast (not in the city centre) is mad. Surely this can't be the norm? Belfast has historically never been near Dublins prices, never mind a pound a pint more expensive.

What would the price of a pint be in everyone's locals be at the minute? Mine is £3.90 which I thought was bad enough.

Quick vote to see who people think is best. (Trying to settle an argument at work more than anything else)
